Cowboys staff talks fondly of Brian Harsin at Auburn coaching clinic

Kellen Moore and Joe Whitt Jr. spoke on Auburn head coach Bryan Harsin and his vision for the program.

The Auburn Tigers flaunted its NFL connections last Friday with a high school coaching clinic at the Plains.

The clinic featured Dallas Cowboys’ offensive coordinator [autotag]Kellen Moore[/autotag] and defensive passing game coordinator [autotag]Joe Whitt. Jr.[/autotag] Auburn head coach [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag] was Moore’s QB coach at Boise State and Whitt Jr. played wide receiver for Auburn in the late 1990s.

Harsin, Moore and Whitt Jr. spoke to over 250 coaches at the clinic. Moore’s section of the clinic focused on offensive tempos, and he had a lot of good things to say about Harsin in an Auburn release.

“It was a great example for me as I progressed into wanting to be a coach, how collaborative [Harsin] was. It was very much a conversation, working together to find solutions. That was a huge lesson for me being around [Harsin]. He’s really smart, really well-prepared. He knew his stuff and allowed me to be part of that. I thought that was really special.”

Under Moore, the Cowboys had the No. 1 total offense in the league with a league-leading 530 points. Moore also reminisced about his time playing under Harsin at Boise State, saying he was one of his main inspirations for learning how to coach.

Joe Whitt Jr. learned coaching from his father, who coached for the Tigers for 25 years. Whitt initially played wideout at Auburn, but after a career-ending injury, he turned his attention to coaching. Whitt Jr. wasn’t as familiar with Harsin, but he came away from the coaching camp impressed with Harsin’s mentality.

“These guys want to have an opportunity to play on the next level. He has the ability to give them that opportunity. When you have a guy who is detailed and understands how to win, it’s going to give us a chance to win here at Auburn.”

The Cowboys’ defense struggled a bit in the passing game this year. Whitt Jr.’s unit gave up an average of 238.2 yards per game, which fell in the bottom half of the league. Nonetheless, Dallas’ secondary had a league-high 26 interceptions which helped contribute to a +14 turnover differential.

Top 5 Defensive Coordinator candidates for Raiders

Raiders new head coach Josh McDaniels’ top priority is finding a Defensive Coordinator. Here are the Top 5 candidates out there.

Last season, Gus Bradley did some good things with the Raiders defense. But barring any kind of unexpected return with the new staff, Josh McDaniels will be looking to completely revamp the staff with his own guys.

McDaniels is an offensive guy, so the defensive coordinator will be a big hire. You figure McDaniels will control the offense in much the same way Gruden did, which gives the defensive coordinator a lot of autonomy. That will be attractive to some candidates out there. Perhaps more attractive than joining a staff with a defensive-minded head coach.

There are a lot of great candidates out there to choose from. Though unfortunately there are also a lot of teams currently in the market for a new DC, so the Raiders will have competition. Here are five top candidates who would be solid gets for the Raiders.

Colts’ defensive coordinator tracker: Who has interviewed for vacancy

Tracking the Colts’ interviews for their defensive coordinator vacancy.

The Indianapolis Colts are already on the search for a new defensive coordinator with Matt Eberflus taking the over as the head coach of the Chicago Bears.

With the Colts looking to bring in a replacement, the majority of interviews thus far have come from the outside. Current safeties coach Alan Williams appears to be in the mix but no interview for the vacancy has been reported yet.

With it being likely that the next defensive coordinator will come from the outside, the Colts are looking at an extensive overhaul of the entire defensive coaching staff. This is the first time in Frank Reich’s tenure that he’ll be working with a defensive coordinator of his choosing.

So as the interview process begins, here’s an updated tracker on who the Colts have interviewed or will interview for the vacated role:

Colts to interview Kris Richard, two others for DC vacancy

The Colts will reportedly interview Kris Richard, Gus Bradley and Joe Whitt Jr. for the defensive coordinator vacancy.

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to interview three more candidates for their defensive coordinator vacancy on Monday and Tuesday, per Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star.

Those three new candidates include New Orleans Saints secondary coach Kris Richard, Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Gus Bradley and Dallas Cowboys secondary coach Joe Whitt Jr., according to Erickson.

This brings the total to six candidates thus far for the defensive coordinator vacancy left by Matt Eberflus. The Colts interviewed Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Joe Cullen and Washington defensive backs coach Chris Harris over the weekend.

The Colts have also reportedly interviewed or will interview Tennessee Titans senior assistant Jim Schwartz.

Both Richard and Bradley have experience as defensive coordinators. Richard was a big part of the Legion of Boom with the Seattle Seahawks from 2015-2017 while Bradley has had three separate stints in the role.

Whitt Jr. has bounced around the league over the last few seasons holding the role of defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator in several areas.

It will be interesting to see what happens with this vacant role but this is the first time head coach Frank Reich will be allowed to assemble a defensive staff since he joined the Colts in 2018.
