Darren Rizzi is already one of the Saints’ winningest interim coaches

After just two games, Darren Rizzi is tied for the second-most wins by a New Orleans Saints interim head coach. How far to reach the top?

Darren Rizzi’s the only New Orleans Saints head coach other than Sean Payton to start 2-0. The second victory tied him with Aaron Kromer for the second most victories by a Saints’ interim head coach. The only person with more victories is Joe Vitt, who took over for Kromer after six games.

The big difference between Rizzi, Kromer and Vitt is the situations they inherited. Kromer and Vitt were interim coaches because Payton was suspended for a year. The team the year prior went 13-3 and is one of the greatest teams in franchise history. Did we mention Drew Brees was still the quarterback?

That was a flourishing team who lost their head coach for the entirety of the season. Rizzi took on a team in the middle of the year that was in the midst of a seven game losing streak. These were drastically different circumstances, to say the least.

Unless there’s a complete explosion, Rizzi will finish the year with more victories than Kromer. To cross Vitt’s bar of five wins, New Orleans will have to beat the Rams, Packers, Commanders or Buccaneers in addition to winning the easier games on the schedule.

Rizzi has started his run strong, but how it ends will determine how the Rizzi Era is remembered.

All 20 of the former Saints coaches and players joining Sean Payton’s Broncos

All 20 of the former New Orleans Saints coaches and players joining Sean Payton on the Denver Broncos, from Joe Vitt to Wil Lutz:

Sean Payton brought a lot of people with him to the Denver Broncos when he left the New Orleans Saints — and he may not be finished yet. Payton has brought on former Saints assistant coaches like Joe Vitt, Mike Westhoff, and Zach Strief as well as players including Adam Trautman and Wil Lutz. Now he’s making moves in the front office. And recently-fired Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael is expected to reunite Payton in an undetermined role, too.

It’s an expansive list. Here’s everyone in Denver we could track down who previously worked for Payton in New Orleans:

Pete Carmichael joining Sean Payton’s Broncos coaching staff

That didn’t take long. Ex-Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael is joining Sean Payton’s Broncos coaching staff:

That didn’t take long. Jeff Duncan reports for the Times-Picayune | Advocate that ex-New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael is joining Sean Payton’s coaching staff on the Denver Broncos, though his exact role is unknown; expect Carmichael to carry some sort of senior assistant title and get back to what he did best in New Orleans while drawing up plays behind the scenes.

Carmichael was let go after an 18-year run with the Saints, having spent most of that time as Payton’s offensive coordinator. He only rarely called plays and struggled in that role the last two years after Payton left the team. Now he’s going to Denver for a reunion with Payton and former coworkers including Zach Strief, Mike Westhoff, Joe Vitt, John Morton, and Joe Lombardi, among others.

It’s hardly surprising that Carmichael is teaming up with Payton. They’ve worked well together before. They’re also facing a tough task in getting the Broncos offense up to snuff, with or without Russell Wilson at quarterback. Odds are Carmichael won’t be the last former Saints coach or player to go out West and reunite with Payton. The Broncos are scheduled to play a road game in New Orleans in 2024, so stay tuned for that dramatic matchup at the Caesars Superdome.

The Raiders broke a surprising record set by the Saints in Thursday night’s blowout

Interim Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce broke a surprising record set by the Joe Vitt-led Saints in Thursday night’s blowout:

You won’t find many scores more lopsided than the final tally from Thursday night’s game — and the history books spell it out. The Las Vegas Raiders destroyed the Los Angeles Chargers by a margin of 63-21, breaking a record that was, surprisingly, set by the New Orleans Saints.

That’s because the Raiders are led by interim head coach Antonio Pierce, who took over earlier this season. Pierce’s 42-point margin of victory is the biggest win by an interim head coach since the league merger in 1970, surpassing the 41-0 shutout that the Saints pitched when Joe Vitt was their interim coach back in 2012.

It isn’t the biggest win by an interim coach in pro football history, though. As noted by CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, Chicago Bears interim coach Hunk Anderson and Luke Johnsos logged a 47-0 win against the Cleveland Rams way back in 1942. How’s that for a stat?

But this Raiders win does surpass the Saints’ blowout in 2012. And it’s just the tenth time sine 1970 that a team has scored more than 60 points in a game, as observed by Yahoo Sports’ Charles McDonald. The Miami Dolphins put up 70 points on Sean Payton’s Denver Broncos earlier this season.

The last time before that, Payton was on the other end of it (and so was Vitt, the current Broncos senior defensive assistant) when his Saints beat the Indianapolis Colts 62-7 more than a decade ago in 2011. It’s funny how these things are all interconnected.

Joe Vitt reunites with Sean Payton as Broncos’ senior defensive assistant

“He’s a tremendous communicator with players, probably the most important hire I made in New Orleans,” Sean Payton said of Joe Vitt.

Sean Payton finalized his Denver Broncos coaching staff last month with a final round of hires that included new senior defensive assistant Joe Vitt, a 68-year-old coach who came out of retirement to assist defensive coordinator Vance Joseph this season.

Vitt’s coaching career started with the then-Baltimore Colts as a quality control coach in 1979. He went on to coach with eight more NFL teams, primarily working with safeties and linebackers as a position coach.

When Payton was hired by the New Orleans Saints in 2006, he brought Vitt in as an assistant head coach and linebackers coach.

“He’s a tremendous communicator with players, probably the most important hire I made in New Orleans back in ‘06,” Payton said of Vitt at the NFL owners’ meetings on March 27. “He’ll be a good asset for our team.”

Vitt coached with the Saints from 2006-2016, serving as an interim coach during the 2012 season while Payton was suspended. After that, he later coached with the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets.

Vitt last coached in the NFL in 2020. He will now reunite with Payton in Denver.

Former Saints linebackers coach Joe Vitt joins Sean Payton’s Broncos coaching staff

Stop us if you’ve heard this before, but Sean Payton’s Broncos hired one of his old Saints assistants. Joe Vitt exited retirement to join Payton in Denver:

Stop us if you’ve heard this before, but Sean Payton’s Denver Broncos hired one of his old New Orleans Saints assistants. Joe Vitt exited retirement to join Payton in Denver, the team announced this week, listing him as a senior defensive assistant. Vitt previously coached linebackers under Payton for a decade in New Orleans but was dismissed along with a number of tenured assistants during the 2017 offseason. He also served as interim head coach when Payton was suspended for the 2012 campaign.

Vitt, 68, got his start as a coach on the Baltimore Colts back in 1979 and brings decades of experience to Denver. After leaving New Orleans, he worked as a consultant on the Miami Dolphins in 2017 and as an outside linebackers coach for the New York Jets in 2019 and 2020, hired in both stops by his son-in-law Adam Gase as head coach of each AFC East team. He was out of football in the years since. His son Joey Vitt, Jr. still works as an area scout for the Saints.

Payton has collected a lot of former Saints players and coaches on the Broncos so far. Vitt joins offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, offensive line coach Zach Strief, tight ends coach Declan Doyle, pass game coordinator John Morton, outside linebackers coach Michael Wilhoite, and assistant head coach MikeWesthoff on the coaching staff with the roster including familiar names like wide receivers Marquez Callaway and Lil’Jordan Humphrey, defensive tackle Jordan Jackson, running back Tony Jones Jr., tight end Chris Manhertz, and fullback Michael Burton. Expect more former Saints to join them.
