Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Schmidt dies at 92

Joe Schmidt, one of the most iconic players in Detroit Lions history, died at the age of 92.

“We are saddened to hear of the passing of Joe Schmidt. Joe was a Lion through and through, having spent his entire career in Detroit,” the Lions said in a statement. “Joe was an enduring link to our Championship era and one of the proudest Lions you will ever meet.”

Schmidt led the Lions defense. The team won two NFL championships, 10 Pro Bowl selections, made eight All-Pro teams.

Schmidt played 13 seasons, starting 151 of 155 games. He was a seventh-round pick out of Pitt.

“Joe Schmidt had the heart of a Lion, which made it appropriate that he was also the heart of our team,” Lions owner/chair emeritus Martha Firestone Ford said in a statement. “Joe was a key part of our Championship seasons and continued to be an important part of our organization until his passing. Joe made his home in Detroit and carried his success from the field into our community. I am saddened to hear of his passing, but I have nothing but fond memories of the person he was.”

One the greatest Detroit Lions in the franchise’s long history has passed away. Linebacker Joe Schmidt, a fixture in the middle of the Detroit defense from 1953 to 1965, was 92 and had been in hospice care.

Schmidt was a 10-time All-Pro as a middle linebacker and the centerpiece of two Lions championship squads. He was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1973.

Schmidt also coached the Lions from 1967 to 1972. He was a member of the NFL’s top 100 players of all-time. His No. 56 is retired by the Lions.

Our deepest sympathies are with Schmidt’s loved ones and Lion

Our friends at Touchdown Wire recently opted to determine the best defensive player for every NFL franchise. For the Detroit Lions, the choice was a pretty easy one.

Joe Schmidt

The powerful, prolific linebacker from the franchise’s heyday in the 1950s and early 1960s earned the bid. Schmidt was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1973 after his highly decorated career. Schmidt’s No. 56 is the only defensive player jersey to be retired by the Lions.

“Joe Schmidt was a transcendent linebacker for over a decade, earning eight first-team All-Pro honors in 10 years and making the Pro Bowl every season from 1954-1963. Twice he was voted the league’s best defender by his peers.”

Lem Barney, Alex Karras, Dick Lebeau and Yale Lary — all Hall of Famers — belong in the argument with Schmidt, but he’s the clear cream of the Lions defensive crop.
