Joe Mixon’s best plays: Highlights from Texans RB’s 2024 season

Let’s take a look back at some of Joe Mixon’s best plays with the Houston Texans during the 2024 season.

While it might have been Year 1 for Joe Mixon in a Houston Texans uniform, the former Cincinnati Bengals star felt right at home.

Mixon, the backbone of Houston’s ground game, served as a staple for the Texans en route to a second AFC South division title under DeMeco Ryans and AFC Divisional Round matchup appearance.

The two-time Pro Bowl running back became the sixth player in franchise history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season and the first to accomplish the feat since Carlos Hyde in 2019. He finished with 1,012 yards and a team-leading 13 TDs while averaging 4.2 yards per attempt.

His numbers could’ve been much better if not for three missed games due to an ankle injury. It also didn’t help that Houston relied heavily on the passing game late in the fourth quarter because of the score in close losses.

While many will remember Josh Jacobs, Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley’s breakout seasons on new rosters, Mixon deserves some love for stabilizing the H-Town, ground-and-pound attack. Below is a highlight reel of Mixon’s best plays from 2024, which could end up being the first of many seasons with the Texans.

Is Joe Mixon playing today? Injury updates for Texans RB

Texans running back Joe Mixon is dealing with an ankle injury entering the AFC Divisional Round matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. Here are the latest updates.

While the Houston Texans are headed to the AFC Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs, one of their star players could be limited in Saturday’s showdown against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon dealt with an ankle issue throughout the week of practice and was a late addition to the injury report. He practiced sporadically on Wednesday and didn’t take the field during Thursday’s final walkthrough.

The do-it-all running back has been essential to Houston’s regular-season success en route to a second AFC South division title. The Texans already have dealt with plenty of issues at the receiver spot with season-ending injuries, only adding more to Mixon’s plate.

Right now, the Texans are being cautious with Mixon’s status. And while there is cause for concern, it would be fairly surprising if the running back was sidelined in a winner-take-all showdown.

Here’s the latest on Mixon ahead of Saturday’s showdown between the two AFC contenders in Kansas City.

Joe Mixon injury update

Despite listed as questionable with an ankle injury for Saturday’s contest against Kansas City, KPRC2 Sports Aaron Wilson reported that Mixon was “good to go” for kickoff.

NFL Network later confirmed the report, stating that Mixon would remain the focal point of the offense on Saturday against the Chiefs.

Mixon’s ankle has been a lingering problem throughout the year. After being brought down with an illegal hip-drop tackle in Week 2’s win over the Chicago Bears, he missed three games before returning in Week 6.

Against the Miami Dolphins in Week 15, Mixon was limited in the fourth quarter after being tackled while rolling over on his ankle. He didn’t leave the game, but his burst and acceleration were depleted.

Here’s a look at the Texans’ running back options should Mixon be sidelined or limited for Saturday’s showdown:

  • Dameon Pierce
  • Dare Ogunbowale
  • J.J. Taylor (elevated from practice squad)

Joe Mixon stats

After being traded to Houston from the Cincinnati Bengals this offseason, Mixon has become the bell-cow back for the Texans’ offense. The veteran rushed for 1,016 yards off 245 carries for 11 touchdowns. He also added 36 receptions, 309 yards and a touchdown as a receiver.

Mixon became the sixth running back in franchise history to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season and the first since Carlos Hyde in 2019.

The former Oklahoma star also became the first Texans running back since Arian Foster in 2012 to rush for over 100 yards in a playoff game after his performance in a 32-12 win against the Chargers last weekend.

Texans receive positive update on RB Joe Mixon ahead of Chiefs game

Joe Mixon won’t be denied a place on the field for Saturday’s showdown at Arrowhead Stadium.

Joe Mixon isn’t being kept out of Saturday’s contest at Arrowhead Stadium.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Houston Texans Pro Bowl running back plans to start against the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round.

Mixon had been dealing with a lingering ankle issue throughout the week that limited him in practice. On the team’s injury report, Mixon was listed as out for practice, along with wide receiver Robert Woods (hip). Both were listed as questionable following Thursday’s final practice.

Houston, which is trying to advance to the AFC Championship for the first time in franchise history, needs a stable ground game to combat Patrick Mahomes’ and a high-tempo passing attack.

In last week’s wild-card round win over the Los Angeles Chargers, Mixon became the first running back since Arian Foster in 2012 to rush for 100 yards in a playoff game. He finished with 106 yards and scored a 17-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to ice the game.

In 14 regular-season games, Mixon rushed for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns while averaging 4.4 yards per attempt. He became the sixth running back in franchise history and the first since 2019 to eclipse 1,000 yards in a single season.

“Joe did a great job there today and he doesn’t do that without the way our guys block, tight ends, receivers, also the offensive line,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. “Like collective effort there which allowed us to run the wall the way we did.”

The ankle issue has been something lingering around Mixon since the start of the regular season. The 28-year-old missed three games early this season after a hip drop tackle by Chicago Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards injured his right ankle on Sept. 15.

Mixon dealt with the issue during the third quarter of Week 15’s win over the Miami Dolphins, but only left for a drive before returning.

As the Texans look to make history, Mixon likely will see action, even if it’s limited. He was part of the 2021 Cincinnati Bengals roster to take down Mahomes in the AFC Championship Game and plans on breaking the 1-1 tie at Arrowhead Stadium.

“I’m gonna do whatever it takes on my end, and I’m sure that everybody else on the team is gonna do the same thing,” Mixon said Tuesday. “Everybody has the same mindset and we just have to go out there and make some things happen.”

Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, who was limited throughout practice this week with a knee issue, is also expected to play. He did not start in the Week 16 loss due to his three-game suspension for the hit against Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence in Week 13.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CT. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN and ABC.

Texans RB Joe Mixon’s status for AFC Divisional Round game revealed

Running back Joe Mixon s dealing with an ankle injury entering Saturday’s divisional-round matchup against the Chiefs.

The Houston Texans could be without their star running back when the team travels to Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday to take on the Kansas City Chiefs.

Running back Joe Mixon, who did practice during Thursday’s final walkthrough, is listed as questionable for the AFC Divisional Round matchup against the defending Super Bowl champions.

“Joe did a great job there today and he doesn’t do that without the way our guys block, tight ends, receivers, also the offensive line,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. “Like collective effort there which allowed us to run the wall the way we did.”

Mixon appeared on the team’s injury report on Wednesday after an ankle issue, but was listed as a limited participant. The ankle injury has been something lingering around the Pro Bowl running back since the start of the regular season.

Is Texans RB Joe Mixon playing against Chiefs?

Texans running back Joe Mixon is dealing with an ankle injury heading into Saturday’s contest against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Houston Texans are already down two wide receivers, two tight ends and an offensive lineman for Saturday’s divisional-round matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Now, they could be down at tailback following Thursday’s practice.

Running back Joe Mixon was not seen during the media session on Thursday afternoon. He was listed as limited with an ankle injury on Wednesday’s injury report.

Houston needs a stable run game headlined by the Pro Bowl runner if it stands a chance of securing a victory at Arrowhead Stadium. Even with the stellar outing by Dameon Pierce in Week 18’s win over the Tennessee Titans, Mixon has been Houston’s go-to runner.

In last week’s wild-card round win over the Los Angeles Chargers, Mixon became the first running back since Arian Foster in 2012 to rush for 100 yards in a playoff game. He finished with 106 yards and scored a 17-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to ice the game.

“He wants the football,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said following a 32-12 win. “You want to play well in the playoffs you have to be able to run the football. So Joe did a great job there today and he doesn’t do that without the way our guys block, tight ends, receivers, also the offensive line. Like collective effort there which allowed us to run the wall the way we did.”

Mixon, who inked a three-year extension this offseason after being traded to Houston by the Cincinnati Bengals, also became the sixth running back in franchise history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season. He was on pace for 1,300 yards and 4.7 yards per attempt before an ankle injury in Week 2 sidelined him for three games.

Mixon’s status on the injury report should provide more insight into Houston’s ground game. If he can’t go, the Texans will rely on a combination of Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale.

In 14 regular-season games, Mixon rushed for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns while averaging 4.4 yards per attempt.

Offensively, the Texans are down receivers Tank Dell (knee) and Stefon Diggs (torn ACL) and tight ends Brevin Jordan (torn ACL) and Cade Stover (shoulder). Robert Woods (hip) also did not practice the past two days.

Kickoff from Arrowhead Stadium is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on ABC and ESPN.

WATCH: Joe Mixon joins Texans 1,000-yard club vs. Titans

The streak is over! Joe Mixon has ended the 1,000-yard drought in Houston!

Welcome to the history books, Joe Mixon.

With a 3-yard run on the opening drive at Nissan Stadium against the Tennessee Titans, Mixon became the fifth running back in Houston Texans history to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season.

The 29-year-old also becomes the first running back to hit the 1K marker since Carlos Hyde in 2019.

Since arriving in Houston, Mixon has been as advertised. After singing a three-year, $27 million extension following a trade from the Cincinnati Bengals, Mixon promised to be a workhorse and stabilizer for Houston’s ground game.

Consider the mission accomplished as the postseason begins. In 12 games, he’s averaged 92.8 yards per contest. Mixon’s also scored 11 touchdowns off 240 carries while averaging 4.1 yards per attempt.

The 2024 season will mark the fifth time Mixon’s hit the 1,000-yard marker in his career. He joins Derrick Henry as one of two active running backs with at least five 1,000-yard seasons.

With a win, the Texans will secure a second 10-win season under DeMeco Ryans and C.J. Stroud.

The Texans will host either the Los Angeles Chargers or Pittsburgh Steelers next week in the wild-card round.

Texans star RB Joe Mixon expects to play vs. Chiefs in Week 16

Joe Mixon might be limited at practice, but he’s full-go for Saturday’s showdown in Kansas City.

Joe Mixon might have been limited during Tuesday’s walkthrough practice, but the Houston Texans aren’t worried about his status for Saturday’s road test against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mixon, who’s less than 90 yards away from becoming the first Texans running back to eclipse 1,000 yards in a season since Carlos Hyde in 2019. isn’t concerned, either.

“We’re starting playoff football right now,” Mixon told reporters Tuesday. “I’ve got to be there, and I’m going to be there. I’mma be there for my teammates and obviously for myself.”

Mixon suffered an ankle injury in the first half of Sunday’s win over the Miami Dolphins after linebacker Jordyn Brooks used an illegal hip-drop tackle technique to bring him down. While he never was ruled out, he was limited for most of the second half.

Mixon said he didn’t blame Brooks for the hit because it differed from the tackle made by Chicago Bears linebacker T.J.Edwards in Week 2 that sidelined him for five games.

“People just get lazy on tackles, and unfortunately, that’s the result,” Mixon said. “The best thing is I’m up walking and obviously finished the game.”

Currently averaging 82.7 yards per game, Mixon’s bell-cow, bruising running style has been a constant toward the offensive success. In games where he rushes for 100 yards, the Texans are 5-2.

Kansas City, which could be without three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes because of an ankle injury, is only giving up 91.9 rushing yards per game, the third-fewest in the league.

Kickoff is scheduled for noon CT. The game will be nationally televised on NBC.

Recap: Texans RB Joe Mixon scores 2 TDs in blowout win over Patriots

The Houston Texans improved to 5-1 for the first time since 2012 after securing a 20-point win over the New England Patriots

How do you like them apples?

Joe Mixon returned to his Pro Bowl form with a 102-yard rushing performance while scoring two touchdowns as the Houston Texans bested the New England Patriots, 41-21, at Gillette Stadium.

With the win, the Texans join the 2012 roster as the only team in franchise history to begin the season 5-1. That season, Houston started 11-1 before securing a division title at 12-4.

Fully healthy, the Texans could surpass the marker with 13 wins.

Mixon, who missed three games with an ankle injury, proved he was back at full capacity during the second quarter when he broke free for a 57-yard gain. The former Bengals star found his way into the end zone on a 10-yard touchdown pass from C.J. Stroud.

Stroud might have thrown an interception during the second quarter, but he also threw three touchdown passes to coast out to a 21-7 lead entering the third quarter.

Stefon Diggs took over as the new No. 1 target with Nico Collins on the injured reserve, hauling in a team-leading six catches for 77 yards and a score.

Tank Dell, who last season served as Houston’s No. 2 weapon during his season, posted a season-high seven receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter.

The Patriots offense finally found life behind Drake Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in last year’s NFL draft. After failing to score more than 20 points in four of their first five games, New England scored a season-high 21 points thanks to three touchdown passes from the North Carolina product.

Maye finished 20 of 33 for 243 yards and rushed 38.  He was intercepted twice, sacked four times and caught up a fumble that led to Diggs’ touchdown.

Houston’s secondary will need work, but the pass rush was potent. Will Anderson Jr. recorded three sacks, improving his season total to 5.5. Pro Bowl counterpart Danielle Hunter striped-sacked Maye during the opening drive of the third quarter, leading to a 14-point swing in favor of Houston.

Pressure from the front seven led to success on the back end. Maye overthrew DeMario Douglas and was intercepted by Calen Bullock. Later on, Anderson popped a pass in the air, which landed in the arms of Eric Murray.
Mixon wasn’t the only running back making highlight plays in his return.

Dameon Pierce, who missed four games with a hamstring injury, ripped off a 54-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to extend Houston’s lead to 20.

Peirce finished with 76 yards and averaged 9.5 yards per run.

The Texans remain on the road next week as they travel to Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers at noon CT.

Texans receive boost on the ground with return of RB Joe Mixon

Joe Mixon is back for the Houston Texans on Sunday afternoon.

Joe Mixon is back for the Houston Texans.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rappaport, Mixon is cleared and will play in Sunday’s matchup against the New England Patriots. The Pro Bowl running back has been out since suffering an ankle injury in Week 2’s win over the Chicago Bears.

Mixon, who inked a three-year extension after being traded to Houston from Cincinnati this offseason, got off to a hot start, rushing for 159 yards and a touchdown in a 29-27 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1.

He was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week and led all players in total yards with 178.

But Mixon was sidelined for three weeks after Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards used an illegal hip-drop tackle to bring him down. While Edwards was fined for the hit, Mixon took the brunt of the impact with the injury.

“I was the No. 1 leader in rushing. I was stopped because of that weak-ass hip-drop tackle,” he told reporters Thursday. “I can’t do nothing about that. It’s frustrating, it is what it is. I want to be out there more than anybody.”

When healthy, Mixon remains the Texans’ top rusher. He leads the team in yards but a decent amount over Cam Akers, who currently has 148 yards.

Akers is averaging nearly a yard fewer (3.9) than Mixon (4.7) through five games.

The return of Mixon is a welcomed one after the Texans lost star receiver Nico Collins to the injured reserve. Collins, who leads the NFL with 567 receiving yards, pulled his hamstring last week in the Texans’ 23-20 win over the Buffalo Bills.

Kickoff is scheduled for noon CT.

Will Texans RB Joe Mixon be ready for Week 6 matchup vs. Patriots?

Joe Mixon could be suiting up for the first time in three weeks this Sunday for the Houston Texans.

Joe Mixon finally appeared on the injury report with a positive outlook for the first time in three weeks.

The Houston Texans starting running back was listed as questionable for Sunday’s matchup against the New England Patriots after practicing Friday afternoon. This marks the second consecutive day of training, meaning there’s a likelihood that Mixon could travel with the team and suit up at Gillette Stadium.

Fellow running back Dameon Pierce will play after missing the previous four games with a hamstring injury. He was a full participant in practice the past two days.

Mixon will have to pass all tests leading up to the game, meaning the training staff will have the final say on if he’s cleared to play. Still, it’s progress. Mixon has barely practiced since suffering an ankle injury in Week 2’s win over the Chicago Bears.

Chicago linebacker T.J. Edwards was fined for using an illegal hip-drop tackle technique during the third quarter of Week 2’s matchup on Sunday night football. Edwards continued to play while Mixon was sidelined for three weeks.

Entering the matchup, the former Cincinnati Bengals star led the league with 159 rushing yards and 178 total yards. He was essential in helping Houston secure a win on the road against the Indianapolis Colts.

“I’m just going to keep on working, and when it’s time to be out there, I’m going to do what I’ve got to do to show I’m the best on the field,” Mixon said Thursday. “It’s as simple as that.”

Even if Mixon were to return, New England’s been one of the better teams defending the run. They enter Sunday under first-year coach Jerod Mayo boasting the seventh-best run defense while holding 4.2 yards per carry,

“They’re going to make you earn it,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said.  “They’re going to make you – they’re going to strain. They’re going to make you really work to get points against this defense. So, despite their record, I can see [Mayo’s] imprints all over this team with their physicality, their mindset and the way they’re playing football.”

With Mixon absent, Houston has relied on the combination of Dare Ogunbowale and Cam Akers. Since Week 2, the Texans have averaged just 77 rushing yards per game.

Kickoff at noon CT.
