New Balance and Joe FreshGoods new “Stuntman” 650 retell the story of Michael Jordan in the coolest way

This is very easily the most creative sneaker of the year in 2023 so far

Most of the sneaker industry is terrified of talking about Michael Jordan because Nike’s legal team is just that good.

But, if you’re willing to explore it, there’s plenty of amazing stories to be told about Jordan’s history with sneaker brands outside of Nike and, now, his own Jordan Brand.

For example, Jordan wanted to sign with Adidas before his mother convinced him to ultimately sign with Nike. That was the correct choice, in hindsight, but it also creates an amazing “what if” scenario that I’d love to see actualized through a sneaker of some sort.

Joe FreshGoods — the creative behind some of New Balance’s best collaborations in recent years — took that challenge on in tackling some of Jordan’s history with New Balance.

It isn’t extensive at all. But the first time we saw Michael Jordan strike his iconic jumpman pose, it wasn’t in a pair of Nikes. It was in a pair of New Balance.

The “Stuntman” 650 tells us that story in the slyest way while avoiding mentioning Jordan at all for very obvious reasons. That’s why it’s only limited to 500 pairs.

We got one for this week’s episode of Special Delivery and, man, is it amazing. Tap in to learn more about this story and the rich history here.

SPECIAL DELIVERY: The ‘Performance Art’ New Balance 993 is the end of an era for Joe FreshGoods

What’s coming next? Find out on Special Delivery

It’s been a great run for Joe FreshGoods at New Balance. He’s dropped hit after hit, from the ‘No Emotions are Emotions’ 992 of 2020 up until now with his ‘Performance Art’ 993.

Now, things are coming to an end. Kind of, sort of.

Joe FreshGoods isn’t leaving New Balance. He’ll still continue to work with the brand and we’ll see more collabs from them coming in the future. The big difference, though, will be in the way that they look.

We explore what that might look like on today’s episode of Special Delivery as well as what might be next for JFG and New Balance as their partnership continues to grow.

SPECIAL DELIVERY: Joe FreshGoods’ ‘Inside Voices’ New Balance 90/60 was so close to perfect

This was ALMOST sneaker of the year.

Joe FreshGoods’ has been on a pretty incredible run.

From his latest Inside Voices collaboration with New Balance to the Conversations Amongst Us collection to just about everything else he’s done, he’s clearly made waves in the sneaker game and is one of the greats people talk about when they discuss designers.

His sneakers are nearly flawless. They bring new colors and designs to New Balance that we’ve never seen before. They stretch the imagination in a way that pushes sneaker culture forward.

The one thing he hasn’t managed to perfect, though? Getting his sneakers to the public. Every time he seems to have found a way, something goes wrong.

The same thing happened here with the Inside Voices collaboration that was released on Instagram. It was a disaster. And we dive into it on this week’s episode of Special Delivery.

You don’t want to miss it.

SPECIAL DELIVERY: Joe FreshGoods is telling more Black stories with these New Balance sneakers

Another homerun from JFG and the crew.

If you’re familiar with Joe Robinson aka Joe FreshGoods and his work with New Balance, then you know every single project he’s been part of has had a Black story at the center of it.

The new “Conversations Amongst Us” collection is part of it. These sneakers tell a story about the intricacies of Black culture in America and the secret language that only Black people understand between one another.

That story is awesome. But the best part about it is that a team of Black associates at New Balance put together this entire project in partnership with JFG.

We dive into all that and more on the 50th episode of Special Delivery. Tap in.
