Texans sign TE Jordan Murray, waive P Joe Doyle

The Houston Texans have signed undrafted free agent tight end Jordan Murray and waived punter Joe Doyle from their offseason roster.

The Texans announced Wednesday they have signed undrafted free agent tight end Jordan Murray.

The former Hawaii product caught 10 passes for 70 yards through 13 games in his final year in college football. The 6-5, 240-pounder originally played four seasons at Missouri State where he had 99 catches for 1,196 yards and 11 touchdowns in his career.

Houston also waived punter Joe Doyle. The Texans signed Doyle as an undrafted free agent. The 6-0, 200-pounder was a redshirt senior who spent 2021-22 with Memphis, and had an NIL deal with Opendorse. From 2017-20, Doyle was a punter at Tennessee in the SEC East.

A few Houston Texans rookies took time to explain their nicknames shortly before minicamp got underway.

The Houston Texans shared a video on their official Twitter account to help fans to more acquainted with the 2023 rookies.

As the players were crossing over the skyway to go to practice Friday morning at Houston Methodist Training Center, they shared with the team’s social media crew their nicknames.

“I was ‘X-Man’ because my name’s Xavier,” sixth-round receiver Xavier Hutchinson explained.

“Growing up, I was ‘Golden Toe Joe,'” punter Joe Doyle said. “My name is Joe and I’m a kicker.”

Fifth-round linebacker Henry To’oTo’o revealed that his nickname is “Hank the Tank,” and the explanation he gave was because, simply, he was a tank.

The redshirt junior announced Tuesday he will transfer to Memphis.

“Thank you Tennessee for letting me live out my dream,” Doyle said on Twitter. “To my coaches, teammates, and fans, thank you for your support and encouragement throughout the last four years.

“With that being said, I have committed to The University of Memphis. I’m excited to join the Tiger family!”

Doyle totaled 86 punts for 3,542 yards with a career-long of 71 yards for Tennessee. He also recorded 17 punts inside the 20-yard line and eight touch-backs.

The Farragut, Tennessee native was UT’s holder in 10 games during the 2020 season.

KNOXVILLE — Brent Cimaglia returns for his senior season at Tennessee.

Cimaglia has appeared in 29 games for the Vols, totaling 129 points in his career and connecting on 41 field goals and 69 extra points.

Tennessee’s special teams unit provides quality depth with redshirt junior punter Joe Doyle electing to return after entering the transfer portal in January. The unit adds redshirt senior punter and holder Brett Graham. Graham is a graduate transfer from UConn.

Junior punter and kicker Paxton Brooks also returns after appearing in 25 contests over the last two seasons for Tennessee.

“I think overall the specialist unit, it’s going to be a good year for us,” Cimaglia told reporters on a Zoom call Friday. “We have Paxton Brooks returning – he’s a great punter and kick off specialist. We have Joe who brings a good morale to the group. We also have Brett Graham that transferred in and he’s a good character to have.

“It’s going to be very competitive in each position, even with long snappers. We’re all kind of an older bunch, but with the long snappers, there are a bunch of young guys stepping in and I’m very confident that they’re going to get their job done. I’m excited to what this unit holds for us.”

Freshman long snapper Will Albright joins the Vols’ program after signing with Tennessee in the 2020 recruiting class. Sophomore Matthew Salansky rounds out the long snapper group as a walk-on.

KNOXVILLE — Tennessee redshirt junior punter Joe Doyle entered the NCAA transfer portal in January.

Doyle has decided to stay at Tennessee and is part of the Vols’ 2020 roster.

The 6-foot, 204-pound Farragut, Tennessee native appeared in 25 games during the 2018 and 2019 seasons for the Vols.

Doyle totaled 86 punts for 3,542 yards with a career-long of 71 yards. He also recorded 17 punts inside the 20-yard line and eight touch-backs during his career at Tennessee.

FARRAGUT — Former University of Tennessee punter Joe Doyle has received a scholarship offer from San Diego State.

Doyle, a 2017 graduate of Farragut High School, announced on Monday that he has received an offer from the Aztecs.

Doyle redshirted at UT after being recruited by former head coach Butch Jones.

In 2018, he was named a freshman All-American by USA Today.

He entered the 2019 campaign as the starting punter for the Volunteers but lost the starting job to Paxton Brooks.

During his time at Tennessee, Doyle was on the final candidates list for the Ray Guy Award and was a member of the Southeastern Conference Fall Honor Roll.

San Diego State is coached by former Tennessee assistant and interim head coach Brady Hoke.
