Report: Ravens DL coach Joe Cullen to join Jags as their DC

The Jags have found their next defensive coordinator and it will be a familiar face: Joe Cullen.

Urban Meyer was named the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach last week and has been working hard to get his staff together. He made significant progress on that Thursday.

Per ESPN’s Dan Graziano and Jamison Hensley, Baltimore Ravens defensive line coach, Joe Cullen, will be the Jags’ new defensive coordinator under Meyer. It will also present Cullen with the chance to return to an organization he once worked for in the past as Jack Del Rio’s defensive line coach (2010-12).

Cullen spent the past five years as the Ravens’ defensive line coach. Before that, he made stops in Detroit (2006-08), Jacksonville, Cleveland (2013), and Tampa (2014-15) where he had the same coaching role.

During Cullen’s five years with Baltimore, they were ranked seventh, twelfth, first, fourth, and seventh in total defense. He aided the unit by developing defensive lineman Michael Pierce, Brandon Williams, and Timmy Jernigan and helped them in becoming a strong unit against the rush, too.

Cullen could have some of Meyer’s college assistants working under him in Charlie Strong and Chris Ash, who are expected to land jobs on the Jags’ staff as defensive assistants, too. Texans defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver will interview (or already has), too, and could be joining the staff after being a graduate assistant under Meyer in 2010.

Ravens lose another coach — Jaguars hire Joe Cullen to be defensive coordinator

The Baltimore Ravens have lost yet another defensive coach as Joe Cullen is headed to Jacksonville as the Jaguars’ defensive coordinator.

The Baltimore Ravens continue to lose members of their coaching staff early in this offseason. According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano and Jamison Hensley, Ravens defensive line coach Joe Cullen is headed to the Jacksonville Jaguars to be their defensive coordinator.

Cullen had been with Baltimore for the last five seasons. He initially joined the coaching staff in 2016 and has helped develop players like Brandon Williams, Justin Madubuike, and Michael Pierce. With how impressive the Ravens were against the run this season, it’s not shocking Cullen is getting a big shot elsewhere.

At Harbaugh’s end-of-season press conference on Wednesday, he said he expected both offensive coordinator Greg Roman and defensive coordinator Don Martindale would be back for the 2021 season. However, Baltimore has taken some severe losses with position coaches being hired away left and right. Cullen will be the third defensive coach to leave this offseason to become a defensive coordinator elsewhere. Defensive backs coach Jesse Minter is expected to be hired by Vanderbilt while linebacker coach Mike Macdonald is now the defensive coordinator for Michigan.

With the potential for the Ravens to lose even more coaches, the Ravens have pretty massive holes to fill this offseason beyond just their roster.

Report: Jags, Meyer view Ravens DL coach Joe Cullen as a ‘top target’ for DC job

The Jags are weighing their options for a defensive coordinator and it appears Joe Cullen is one of the top candidates.

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Baltimore Ravens defensive line coach Joe Cullen is a top target to join the Jacksonville Jaguars’ staff under Urban Meyer as a defensive coordinator. The news comes after Meyer was named the Jags’ coach Thursday evening and introduce to the Jacksonville media Friday.

Cullen, 53, is a name many Jags fans will remember from the Jack Del Rio era as he was the Jags’ defensive line coach from 2010-12. During that time, the Jags ranked No. 28, No. 6, and No. 30, respectively, in total defense.

Cullen, who as been the Ravens’ defensive line coach since 2016, is a highly-respected name in the NFL coaching industry and would bring a high-energy member to Meyer’s staff. Since he’s been with Baltimore, they’ve ranked seventh, twelfth, first, fourth, and seventh in total defense. Cullen also helped develop defensive lineman Michael Pierce, Brandon Williams, and Timmy Jernigan and aided them in becoming a strong unit against the rush.

If Cullen is named the Jags’ lead defensive coach, it would be his first time  he’s held an NFL coordinator role, but many feel he’s ready. His potential addition to the staff could possibly lead to the Jags utilizing the 3-4 more, though he’s coached some 4-3 units, too. Cullen bring 14 years of NFL coaching experience to the table after making stops in Detroit, Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, Cleveland, and Baltimore.

Cullen could have some of Meyer’s college assistants working alongside him in Charlie Strong and Chris Ash, who are expected to land jobs on the Jags’ staff as defensive assistants, too. Texans defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver has also been labeled as a name to watch as he was a graduate assistant under Meyer in 2010.

Another name to watch for the Jags’ defensive coordinator job is Raheem Morris, who the Jags interviewed for their head coaching vacancy. Due to his time serving as the Atlanta Falcons’ interim and his time as the Bucs’ head coach, he’ll have several offers on the table to choose from, though.

Report: Ravens DL coach Joe Cullen top target for Jaguars defensive coordinator job

The Jaguars are starting to build their staff out after hiring Urban Meyer and Ravens’ Joe Cullen could be their defensive coordinator

The Jacksonville Jaguars finished their coaching search, bringing in former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer to right the franchise. But just because either Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman or defensive coordinator Don Martindale wasn’t chosen for the coaching vacancy doesn’t mean Baltimore’s staff isn’t still in the crosshairs.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Ravens defensive line coach Joe Cullen is a top target for the defensive coordinator job on Meyer’s staff.

Cullen has been with Baltimore for the last five seasons, joining the team in 2016 after a two-season stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’s primarily been a defensive line coach throughout his career, both in the NFL and in the college ranks.

If Cullen does leave for Jacksonville’s defensive coordinator job, he’ll be missed in Baltimore. Cullen has helped develop players like Michael Pierce, Brandon Williams, and Timmy Jernigan; while keeping the Ravens’ defense among the best against the run over that time.
