Phillies’ Edmundo Sosa did an extraordinary midair split to stop JJ Bleday from stealing second

Edmundo Sosa can really leap!

Edmundo Sosa went above and beyond to make this crucial defensive play for the Philadelphia Phillies.

On Wednesday, with the Phillies hosting the Miami Marlins in a key NL East matchup for Philadelphia, the home team was holding a 3-2 lead in the seventh. After Andrew Bellatti struck out Miguel Rojas for the first out, catcher J.T. Realmuto threw to Sosa at second as JJ Bleday was making for the steal.

In one of the most impressively athletic plays you’ll see on a tag out, Sosa tagged Bleday while doing midair splits to avoid being run over. Not only that, Sosa stuck the landing after applying the stunning tag!

Bleday was already going to be out due to abandoning the base path on a very strange stealing route, but wow, what a play by Sosa! Talk about securing the second out of the inning in style.
