Adam Gase can’t afford to get swept by his former team

Jets Wire breaks down why Adam Gase cannot afford to get swept by his former team this weekend.

There’s no question that 2019 has been a disappointing year for Adam Gase.

Let’s start at the beginning. Gase found himself on the unemployment line at the beginning of the new year after being let go by the Dolphins in December. He found his footing with the Jets a couple of weeks later, but his time at One Jets Drive has been far from smooth sailing.

From a power struggle with Mike Maccagnan in the spring to a 1-7 start to the regular season despite sky-high preseason expectations, Gase’s first 11 months with the Jets have been nothing short of a letdown. Considering the way things have played out, it couldn’t get any worse from here on out for New York’s first-year head coach, right?

Wrong.

Gase experienced a new level of embarrassment when he went up against his former team in October. The Jets were supposed to have their way with the winless Dolphins and Gase was supposed to get his revenge. Instead, New York laid an egg and gave Miami its first win of the season.

The Jets will have a chance to right their previous wrongs against the Dolphins when Miami comes to town in Week 14. Sam Darnold is playing much better than he was when the two teams met earlier in the season and New York has been better overall the past month. That gives Gang Green a good chance to get Gase his revenge.

If they don’t? Let’s just say it’s not going to be pretty for Gase.

Gase isn’t going anywhere. Chris Johnson made that crystal clear before the Jets played the Redskins in November. Win or lose against the Dolphins on Sunday, Gase will be New York’s head coach in 2020.

With that being said, a loss to Miami in Week 14 would be a massive blow to Gase and his team’s progress. If you thought New York’s first loss to the Dolphins was embarrassing, imagine how a second loss would go over in the locker room?

Gase has been coaching long enough to have experienced his fair share of disappointment. A second loss to the Dolphins would top anything he’s experienced in football in the embarrassment department.

Not only would it be a loss to a team that is inferior on paper, but also one to the organization that decided Gase was not the man to lead his team to victory in divisional matchups like this one.
