Watch: Denico Autry records first sack of season on primetime

Denico Autry finally recorded his first sack as a member of the Houston Texans on Thursday Night Football.

It only took eight games, but Denico Autry finally recorded his first sack with the Houston Texans.

On the New York Jets opening drive, Autry pulverized Aaron Rodgers on third-and-10 for a loss for six yards and an eventual punt deep in New York territory.

Autry, who was suspended back in July for the first six games due to a PED suspension, has played back-to-back games as a rotational option behind Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter.

The sack also marked the first tackle for Autry of the 2024 season. Houston’s

Houston’s offense has been quiet through three drives, meaning the defensive could be in line to win a one-dimensional game at MetLife Stadium.

Jets vs. Texans injury report: Latest updates, news for Tuesday

Here’s the Houston Texans’ injury report for Thursday Night Football’s matchup against the New York Jets.

The Houston Texans head into Thursday night’s game beaten and bruised on offense but could be gaining help defensively.

Linebackers Henry To’oTo’o and Azeez Al-Shaair returned to practice, as did safety Jimmie Ward in preparation to take on the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.

To’oTo’o, who suffered a concussion against the New England Patriots, practiced fully,  Al-Shaair, who suffered a knee injury in Week 6’s road win and Ward, who left during Week 5’s win over the Buffalo Bills, were limited.

Rookie safety Calen Bullock (shoulder) was also limited after leaving during Sunday’s win over the Indianapolis Colts, though he is expected to play for the AFC South-leading champions.

Running back Dameon Pierce (groin) and center/guard Jarrett Patterson (concussion) did not participate.

To’oTo’o is expected to play after missing the past two games. The second-year linebacker said it was a moment he knew how to prepare for after suffering one last season.

“I’m excited,” To’oTo’o said about returning this week. “That’s my biggest thing. I’m just so excited to be able to play the game. I love it and also to be out with the guys that you work so hard with every single day. I’m excited. I’m juiced up and ready to go.”

In six starts, To’oTo’o leads the Texans with 46 tackles, two tackles for loss, and a sack.

Announcers set for Texans vs. Jets Week 9 game

The Houston Texans take center stage on Thursday Night Football against the New York Jets

For the second time in 2024, the Houston Texans will have a stand-alone game.

In a battle for AFC dominance, the Texans (6-2) travel to East Rutherford, N.J., for a showdown with the New York Jets on “Thursday Night Football.” The game will air on Amazon Prime as part of the NFL’s partnership with the company.

Al Michaels will handle the play-by-play, while Kirk Herbstreit will serve as the color commentator. Kaylee Hartung will serve as the sideline reporter.

The Texans are coming off a 23-20 divisional win over the Indianapolis Colts but will be short-handed at receiver. DeMeco Ryans announced Tuesday that Pro Bowl target Stefon Diggs would miss the rest of the regular season with a torn ACL suffered during a non-contact injury in the third quarter.

Diggs, who will be a free agent after the regular season, was a constant No. 2 weapon for Houston and had taken over as the team’s No. 1 after Nico Collins was placed on the injured reserve with a hamstring injury. He ranked seventh in the NFL in catches (47) this season and was second on the Texans in receiving yards (496).

“He’s been such an important part of our team and everything that he brought, not only on the field, but off the field. The energy, the leader, the way he worked every single day,” Ryans said. “Have to pick up the slack. A lot of guys have to step up and pick up the slack. Definitely praying for him.”

The Jets (2-6) are coming off an underwhelming outing against the New England Patriots and could be in do-or-die mode for the remainder of the season. Even after adding All-Pro receiver Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders,  Aaron Rodgers struggled to find a consistent pattern in the passing game.

Should Houston secure a victory, it would remain in second place for the AFC seeding since it holds the tiebreaker over Buffalo.

It would also set up a potential matchup of seven-win performers against the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football in Week 10.

Will Henry To’oTo’o play this week? Injury updates for Texans LB

Houston Texans LB Henry To’oTo’o is dealing with a concussion. Here are the latest updates.

With the Houston Texans on a short week, players currently injured might be out once more if not fully cleared.

That might not be the case for second-year linebacker Henry To’oTo’o, who suffered a concussion earlier this month but returned to practice last week. He was a last-second inactive for Sunday’s 23-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts and could have played if the team was desperate.

Will To’oTo’o suit up on “Thursday Night Football” when the Texans take on the New York Jets? Here’s what happened and his current status entering Tuesday’s walkthrough.

Henry To’oTo’o injury update

To’oTo’o suffered a concussion during the fourth quarter of Week 6’s win over the New England Patriots. He didn’t practice before Week 7’s loss against the Green Bay Packers and was limited last week.

While To’oTo’o practiced on Wednesday, he missed Thursday’s drills for further evaluation. To’o’To’o returned on Friday, but the Texans listed him as questionable on the final injury report.

While the Texans didn’t practice Monday, To’oTo’o would have been a full participant, meaning he’s cleared protocol and can now handle contact. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans didn’t say if he’d play, but the early outlook seems to be promising.

How long will Henry To’oTo’o be out?

Barring a setback during Tuesday’s drills, it would be best to assume that To’oTo’o will play Thursday against the AFC East opponent. The Texans have managed without him and Azeez Al-Shaair through two weeks, but there’s been a drop-off in production between the three rotating options.

Henry To’oTo’o stats

Through six games, To’oTo’o leads the Texans with 46 tackles. He’s also recorded two tackles for loss, a sack and a pass breakup.

Texans LB depth chart

Al-Shaair, who’s also missed the last two games due to a knee injury, could be again after being listed as “didn’t practice” along with Pro Bowl receiver Stefon Diggs and defensive back Jimmie Ward.

Here’s the rest of the linebackers on the active roster:

  • Neville Hewitt
  • Devin White
  • Jake Hansen
  • Del’Shawn Phillips
  • Jamal Hill

Hewitt, White and Hansen rotated in last week and likely will do the same opposite To’oTo’o. Hewitt, best known as a special teams ace, has been the team’s top tackler over the previous two games. He finished with eight stops against the Patriots and Packers, respectively.

Austin Walter takes advantage of opportunity in emotional return home

Jets RB Austin Walter surprisingly put on a show in his emotional return to Houston, helping New York beat the Texans.

When Michael Carter was placed on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain on Saturday, it was assumed that Tevin Coleman and Ty Johnson would take on increased roles in the Jets’ backfield.

Nobody gave Austin Walter — the No. 3 running back on New York’s depth chart after a practice squad elevation — much thought.

Walter, a former undrafted free agent who spent last season playing under Mike LaFleur in San Francisco, used Carter’s absence to make his presence felt in his return to his native Houston on Sunday. The 5-foot-8 tailback found the end zone from two yards out for the Jets’ first touchdown of the game and went on to rush nine times for 38 yards in a 21-14 victory over the Texans.

Most importantly, Walter provided the boost New York’s offense was searching for.

“He’s a fireplug or a spark plug or whatever you want to call it,” Robert Saleh said postgame.

Walter has been searching for an opportunity since he entered the NFL out of Rice University in 2019. Two stints with the 49ers, a brief stop across town with the Giants, and a year in the XFL preceded his chance with the Jets. He entered Sunday’s game with one career carry for three yards. By the time Walter’s day was over, friends and family had witnessed his first career touchdown.

Walter said that his mother predicted Saturday that he would score his first touchdown against the Texans. He chalked the prediction up to “mother’s intuition.” Walter was also confident that his father, Tony, who died four years ago, watched him find his way into the end zone from above.

“I know he had the best seat in the house,” Walter said. “He’d be bragging to all his friends.”

Walter may have some staying power in New York’s backfield after his surprise performance. La’Mical Perine, a 2020 fourth-round pick, was a healthy scratch in favor of Walter, which means the Jets already liked the latter. Walter will likely have a role until Carter returns, at the very least.

Either way, he will be able to remember his Week 12 performance as a special moment in his football journey.

Robert Saleh pleased with Zach Wilson’s game management in rusty return

Zach Wilson was rusty in his return from a sprained PCL, but Robert Saleh liked the way he managed the Jets’ 21-14 win over the Texans.

https://embed.sendtonews.com/oembed/?SC=Rj7wLaZUEu-1644805-7498&format=json&offsetx=0&offsety=0&floatwidth=400&floatposition=bottom-right&float=on

The little things were the hardest for Zach Wilson to accomplish in the first half of the season. Instead of taking care of the football and living to play another down, Wilson often tried to force the issue, placing the Jets in precarious positions.

Such was the case Sunday against the Texans when New York’s prized rookie quarterback shoveled a mind-blowingly bad interception early in his return from a sprained PCL. But after that, Wilson mostly accomplished what Robert Saleh has been looking for out of him all season.

Wilson managed the game and put the Jets in a position to win — which they did — even though he wasn’t at his best.

The Jets went into salt away mode late in the fourth quarter clinging to an 18-14 lead. A hobbled Wilson, who said postgame that his knee still isn’t 100 percent stable, made all of the right decisions — including two on fourth down — to give New York the best possible chance to put the Texans away. He kept the ball out of Houston’s grasp and took time off the clock, forcing the Texans to use all of their timeouts.

“He was fine,” Saleh said. “Obviously, there was a little rust there after a month. I thought he managed the game well.”

Mike LaFleur ultimately leaned on his ground game with Wilson going just 14-24 for 145 yards and the aforementioned interception. But Wilson made throws when he had to, helping the Jets move the chains on third down in key spots.

“Offense was running the heck out of the football and he was doing a good job on third down, so it was just a good day of managing the game,” Saleh said.

The Jets need more out of Wilson through the air and their offense did not exactly operate proficiently with the BYU product back under center. Nonetheless, Wilson took a major step forward against the Texans by showing that he can buckle down, keep the ball in his team’s possession and make the necessary plays to win a game down the stretch.

“You have to be able to come out and play well,” Wilson said. “I’ve had this whole time to watch and learn from everybody else and I thought I had my best week of practice, so now I just have to put it to the field and get better and understand this part of the process and just have that chip on my shoulder.”

Zach Wilson, John Franklin-Myers among Jets’ Studs & Duds in win over Texans

Jets QB Zach Wilson and DE John Franklin-Myers headline our studs and duds from New York’s 21-14 win over the Texans.

The Jets’ three-game losing streak is over.

Zach Wilson’s third-quarter rushing touchdown and strong defense throughout the fourth sealed New York’s third win of the season, as it held on for a 21-14 victory over the Texans in Week 12. The Jets fell behind early to Houston, but fought back and did just enough to claim a win for the first time in November.

Who starred in Houston? Who disappointed? Here are the studs and duds from Gang Green’s first win since Halloween.

6 takeaways from the Jets’ Week 12 win over the Texans

Zach Wilson was his usual self while the Jets’ defensive line dominated in a win over the Texans. Takeaways from New York’s triumph:

The Jets are back in the win column.

New York fell behind by 11 points early in its trip to Houston, but responded and held on at the end for a 21-14 win over the Texans. Zach Wilson didn’t light Houston’s vulnerable secondary on fire in his return from a sprained PCL, making some familiar mistakes. However, he found paydirt on a rushing touchdown in the third quarter for the eventual game-winning score.

Here are six takeaways from New York’s third win of the season.

Jets vs. Texans inactives: Corey Davis out with groin injury, John Franklin-Myers active

Zach Wilson will be without his leading receiver in his return, as Corey Davis is out for the Jets with a groin injury against the Texans.

Zach Wilson will be without his favorite target in his return to the field, as Corey Davis is out with a groin injury against the Texans.

Robert Saleh was originally optimistic about Davis’ chances of suiting up in Week 12. However, the 26-year-old was downgraded from questionable to doubtful on Saturday and will miss his third game of the season. Davis’ absence leaves the Jets with just five healthy wide receivers with Denzel Mims still on the COVID-19 list and without their leading receiver and rusher after Michael Carter landed on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain.

C.J. Mosley (shoulder) and John Franklin-Myers (hip) are both active. There was concern about a hip flare-up potentially keeping Franklin-Myers sidelined, but he’ll suit up and assume his spot on the defensive line. Foley Fatukasi (foot), Shaq Lawson (wrist) and Nathan Shepherd (elbow) are also active after being listed as questionable.

Rounding out New York’s inactives are La’Mical Perine, Isaiah Williams, Jonathan Marshall, Tim Ward, Rachad Wildgoose and Jarrod Wilson. Josh Johnson is active and will serve as Wilson’s backup.

As for the Texans, they will be without a familiar face on Sunday. Former Jets defensive end/outside linebacker Jordan Jenkins is out with a knee injury. Wide receiver Nico Collins (hip), defensive end Jonathan Greenard (foot) and cornerback Lonnie Johnson (illness/foot) are active.

The Jets are hours away from returning to action after their 24-17 loss to the Dolphins in Week 11.

New York travels to Houston to take on a Texans team that found a way to upset the AFC South-leading Titans on the road last weekend. Houston’s defense rose to the occasion in Tennessee and Tyrod Taylor carried the offense on his back, leading the Texans to their second win of the season.

Now Houston has to face Gang Green with Zach Wilson back in the starting lineup.
