Jets preseason games vs. Panthers, Giants to air nationally on NFL Network

Jets to see plenty of national exposure in the preseason

The NFL announced 23 preseason games this August will air live on NFL Network. The Jets will see two of their preseason games among this group, giving them three total preseason games that will be broadcast nationally.

In addition to the Hall of Fame Game on NBC on August 3, the Jets will be live in Weeks 1 and 3 of the preseason on NFL Network. The first NFL Network game will be Saturday, August 12 against the Carolina Panthers at 4:00 p.m. eastern as part of a quadruple-header on the network.

The second NFL Network and third national game of the preseason will be New York’s final preseason game on Saturday, August 26 against the New York Giants at 6:00 p.m. eastern.

Of note, games aired live on NFL Network will be blacked out in the teams’ local markets. The games will still be available on either WNBC or WCBS in New York.

The only preseason game that won’t be broadcast nationally will be Week 2 of the preseason, the third game for the Jets on Saturday, August 19 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

USA TODAY NFL Power Rankings: Jets drop a spot after Week 1 loss

Where do the Jets stand in USA TODAY’s NFL Power Rankings with Week 1 in the books?

The Jets finished strong against the Panthers in Week 1, but their late surge was not enough to overcome an early 16-0 deficit.

New York showed some encouraging signs over the final quarter of play in its 19-14 loss in Carolina, but moral victories don’t move the needle in USA TODAY’s NFL Power Rankings. The Jets dropped one spot from 27th to 28th after their narrow defeat, placing them ahead of just four other teams.

The Jets were not the only AFC East team to drop in the power rankings. In fact, each of New York’s division foes took a tumble in the pecking order — even the Dolphins after their 17-16 win over the Patriots. The Bills experienced the biggest drop after their surprising loss to the Steelers, going from fifth to 10th. Miami moved down from 11th to 12th, while New England went from 13th to 17th.

The Buccaneers, Chiefs, Rams, Browns and Saints rounded out the top five of the rankings. New Orleans moved up 13 spots after its throttling of the Packers to break into the top five, while the Rams went from just outside the top five at sixth to third. The Browns remained in the top five despite their loss to the Chiefs, dropping one spot from third to fourth.

Jets injury report: Mekhi Becton

Jets offensive tackle Mekhi Becton suffered a sprained MCL against the Panthers, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Mekhi Becton suffered a potentially serious knee injury in the third quarter of the Jets’ game vs. the Panthers while blocking on Zach Wilson’s 22-yard touchdown pass to Corey Davis.

Becton was helped off the field by trainers before being carted off with a towel over his face and tears in his eyes. Robert Saleh had no further update on Becton’s condition postgame, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that early test results indicate a sprained MCL for New York’s star offensive tackle.

A sprained MCL would be the best-case scenario for Becton and the Jets, as a sprain likely won’t keep him on the shelf for all of 2021. Morgan Moses slid into the lineup at right tackle after Becton’s injury, with George Fant shifting over to left tackle. That will likely be New York’s offensive line alignment in Week 2 assuming Becton cannot suit up.

Saleh did not have an update on Lamarcus Joyner, who departed early in the game with a shoulder injury and did not return. New York also lost Blake Cashman to a hamstring injury, Jamien Sherwood to a foot injury, and Braden Mann to a knee injury after Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard ran into him on his first punt attempt of the game. Mann did not return, leaving Matt Ammendola to handle both kicking and punting duties. Del’Shawn Phillips fared well in relief of Sherwood, leading the Jets in tackles with 12.

Zach Wilson said postgame that his neck was sore after his NFL debut, as he suffered “whiplash” during the game thanks to a putrid offensive line. Wilson’s neck did not impact his performance late in the game, as he bounced back from a rough start to finish 20-37 for 258 yards, two touchdowns and a second-quarter interception.

The Jets looked like their usual incompetent selves early in their season opener against the Panthers.

New York’s offense sputtered out of the gate, failing to get anything going until late in the third quarter due in large part to offensive line struggles. Zach Wilson and Robert Saleh and Jeff Ulbrich’s defense flipped the switch over the final 16 and a half minutes of play, though, giving the Jets a chance to start the 2021 season with a win.

The Panthers did enough to keep New York at bay in the end, as their 16-0 first-half performance helped them hold off the upset-minded Jets by a final score of 19-14. Carolina used Christian McCaffrey early and often to move the ball with ease, as its star totaled nearly 200 yards of offense. Sam Darnold also did his part, with his second-quarter performance being enough to send his former team home unhappy.

Even with the late comeback attempt, there is still plenty that needs to be cleaned up ahead of Week 2 — especially offensively. Here are six takeaways from the Jets’ season opener.

WATCH: Zach Wilson fires first NFL touchdown pass

Zach Wilson tossed his first NFL touchdown pass, a 22-yard strike to Corey Davis, to bring the Jets within a possession.

Zach Wilson and the Jets are on the board.

The rookie rolled out in the third quarter and fired a 22-yard pass to a wide-open Corey Davis in the end zone for his first career touchdown pass. Wilson struggled throughout the first half due in large part to a lack of protection from his offensive line, but the rookie signal-caller turned it on to get New York in the end zone, going a perfect 4-4 on its first scoring drive.

Wilson kept it rolling after his first career touchdown pass, running in a two-point conversion to cut Carolina’s lead to 16-8 with under two minutes left in the third quarter.

Jets vs. Panthers: Robert Saleh, Zach Wilson debuts among Week 1 storylines

From NFL debuts to reunions with two familiar faces, here are some storylines to follow in the Jets’ season opener against the Panthers.

A new era of Jets football is less than 48 hours away from kicking off.

Gang Green nearly aced the preseason with a 2-0-1 mark in exhibition play, but the stakes will be a lot higher when the Jets take the field in Week 1. Not much is expected of New York this season given its youth, but it wouldn’t hurt to kick off the new year with a statement win against some familiar faces.

Here are five storylines to follow ahead of the Jets’ Week 1 matchup with the Panthers.

Jets begin regular season as underdogs against Panthers

Odds have the Jets dropping the first game of the Robert Saleh era against Sam Darnold and the Panthers on Sunday.

The Jets are just days away from kicking off the Robert Saleh era with a trip to Carolina to take on the Panthers in Week 1.

Las Vegas is not too confident that Robert Saleh’s tenure as Jets head coach will begin on a high note when New York travels to Carolina to take on the Panthers and old friend Sam Darnold in Week 1.

According to BetMGM, the Jets are 4.5-point underdogs on the road against the Panthers. Carolina went just 5-11 last season, but profile as an improved team entering Matt Rhule’s second year as head coach. With a new quarterback in Darnold under center and Christian McCaffery returning after an injury-riddled 2020 season, the Panthers are hoping to reverse their fortunes, beginning with their season opener against New York.

The Jets and Panthers last met in 2017 at MetLife Stadium. Carolina ultimately left the Garden State with a 35-27 win, as Cam Newton and Jonathan Stewart accounted for one rushing touchdown each and Kaelin Clay returned a punt 60 yards for a score.

New York is 3-4 all-time against the Panthers.
