Mexico star Tecatito will miss the World Cup, for real this time

The 29-year-old suffered a serious leg injury in August

Jesús “Tecatito” Corona is finally, officially, out of the World Cup.

The Mexican federation released a statement on Tuesday confirming Tecatito would not be fit for the tournament due to the broken fibula and rupture of his ankle ligaments he suffered in August.

Tecatito, the statement said, “will not be able to be integrated into the Mexico national team heading to the World Cup Qatar 2022,” which was “due to the fact that his recovery process has not been completed after the injury suffered in August of this year.”

The winger had been making faster-than-expected progress in his recovery from the injury, which initially saw him ruled out for 4-5 months.

Mexico still held out hope that a vital part of its attack would make a miraculous comeback for a tournament that was set to start three months after his injury. Head coach Tata Martino named Tecatito to his preliminary 31-man World Cup roster last month, as he aimed to give him as much time as possible to recover.

That move didn’t sit well with Sevilla head coach Jorge Sampaoli, who disputed the notion that Tecatito would have any chance of recovering in time for the World Cup.

Tecatito debuted for Mexico in 2014 and has earned 67 caps to date, scoring 10 goals. He was likely to start in Qatar, giving Martino a selection headache with just two weeks to go until the World Cup begins.

Injured Tecatito and Jimenez named to Mexico preliminary World Cup roster

Tata Martino will have additional time to evaluate the injured pair ahead of the World Cup

Mexico head coach Tata Martino has named a preliminary 31-man World Cup roster, which includes the injured pair Raúl Jiménez and Jesús “Tecatito” Corona.

Martino will have to trim down his squad to 26 players before the tournament in Qatar, with a deadline of November 14 to submit his final roster.

El Tri will head to Spain next month, playing friendlies against Iraq on November 9 and Sweden on November 16 in Girona. Martino’s side will begin World Cup play on November 22 against Poland.

The statuses of Jiménez and Corona have been major talking points as Mexico hopes to utilize one, if not both of its major attacking pieces in Qatar.

Jiménez is recovering from a troublesome groin injury that has seen him sidelined since August. Corona, meanwhile, suffered a broken fibula and a rupture of his ankle ligaments in August.

Martino will aim to evaluate the pair’s fitness in Spain before making a final call on their status for the World Cup.

Missing from the squad was Mexico’s all-time top scorer Chicharito, with Martino confirming last month that the LA Galaxy forward would not be in contention for the World Cup.

Raúl Jiménez is in real danger of missing the World Cup

The forward may miss out, but there was some good news on Jesús “Tecatito” Corona

Mexico head coach Tata Martino has admitted that Raúl Jiménez could miss the 2022 World Cup with a groin injury.

Jiménez has missed the last three games for Wolves and was called into this month’s Mexico camp, but returned to England on Sunday after Martino revealed his injury was worse than initially expected.

“When I visited him 20 or 30 days ago, I never thought we would be in this situation,” Martino said last week.

“I didn’t think his injury was going to be this serious and I don’t think it is that serious, but it needs to be monitored closely.”

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s friendly against Colombia, Martino said that Jiménez, along with winger Jesús “Tecatito” Corona, would be last-minute calls for El Tri’s World Cup roster.

“The only ones who will take us to the last minute are Jesús and Raúl,” Martino said. “When the medical staff asked me until when [we can wait], I told them November 16.”

Corona’s inclusion as a last-minute call counts as good news for Mexico, as the winger initially looked certain to miss the tournament when he suffered a broken fibula and a rupture of his ankle ligaments in August.

Sevilla said the winger would be out 4-5 months after suffering the injury in a training session. Should he be fit for the World Cup, Corona would have only missed three months.

Tecatito Corona to miss World Cup with injury in huge blow for Mexico

The 29-year-old was expected to start for Mexico in Qatar

Sevilla has announced that winger Jesús “Tecatito” Corona will miss 4-5 months with a broken fibula and a rupture of his ankle ligaments.

That timeframe will see the Mexico international miss the 2022 World Cup, dealing a major blow to El Tri’s prospects in Qatar.

Corona appeared in 13 of Mexico’s 14 World Cup qualifiers, starting 10 of those matches. He was projected to be a starter at the World Cup.

The 29-year-old debuted for Mexico in 2014 and has earned 67 caps to date, scoring 10 goals. He was also a part of Mexico’s roster for the 2018 World Cup.

With Corona out, Mexico head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino could consider 18-year-old Arsenal winger Marcelo Flores, who is currently on loan with  Real Oviedo in the Spanish second division.
