Another College Football Playoff projection leaves Notre Dame out

Stick this one on the bulletin board, too.

As we get closer to the 2024 season, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Notre Dame will need to prove a lot of people wrong. Even with the College Football Playoff expanded to 12 teams, no one is going to just let the Irish in. Some expert predictions in recent days are evidence of that.

Days ago, CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm left the Irish out of his playoff projection. Now, you can add The Action Network’s Brett McMurphy to that list. Instead, he has the Irish facing Washington in the Holiday Bowl, a bowl the Irish haven’t played in before:

So again, the Irish find themselves on the outside looking in of one expert’s bracket. The past few days have given them a heavy dose of reality that they’ll need to win almost every game to give themselves a shot at making it. Hopefully, all of this will give them the motivation to do just that.

Tennessee football projected for Florida bowl game

Tennessee football is projected to play in a Florida bowl game on Jan. 2, 2025.

Game No. 1 of the college football season will kick off on Aug. 31 for Tennessee.

As the season gets closer, the Vols received a bowl game projection from CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm. He projects Tennessee to play Virginia Tech in the Gator Bowl.

The Gator Bowl is slated for Jan. 2, 2025 at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EDT.

Tennessee leads the all time series against the Hokies, 6-3. The two schools last played on Sept. 10, 2016. The Vols were victorious, 45-24, at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee.

The first game in the series took place on Nov. 14, 1896. The Vols won, 6-4, in Knoxville.

Oregon to host a first-round playoff game in latest CBS projection

According to Jelly Palm of CBS Sports, 6-seed Oregon will host 11-seed Kansas State in the expended playoff format.

It’s hard to imagine a bigger game at Autzen Stadium this season than when No. 2 Ohio State comes to town to play No. 3 Oregon on Oct. 12. That’s assuming those rankings hold in a month into the season.

But according to CBS Sports writer Jerry Palm, an even bigger matchup is projected for Autzen.

Palm has projected the Ducks will be seeded No. 6 in the expanded playoff format and will host 11-seed Kansas State with the winner playing No. 3 Utah in the quarterfinals at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta.

Oregon last played the Wildcats in the 2013 Fiesta Bowl. It’s the only time the two teams have met. That game was highlighted with De’Anthony Thomas returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown and it was all downhill for K-State.

If this prediction comes true, it would be interesting to see the turnout for the Peach Bowl, which would host two teams not in the SEC in the heart of SEC country.

Oregon is no stranger to facing the Utes as Utah turned into somewhat of a rival for the Ducks during their time in the Pac-12. The two teams have clashed and had some classic games, including last season when the Ducks marched into Salt Lake City and crushed then No. 13 Utah 35-6.

But the Utes are favored to in their new conference, the Big XII and with quarterback Cameron Rising returning from injury, Utah would be a formidable foe in what would be one of the better quarterfinal matchups.

Texas A&M is predicted to make the College Football Playoffs by CBS analyst

One analyst has high expectations for Texas A&M ahead of Mike Elko’s first season

Texas A&M’s 2024 season will start and end in high-profile fashion, hosting Notre Dame to open the season, while the Lone Star Showdown vs. Texas will resume more than a decade after the Longhorns transitioned to the SEC this summer.

This month, progress has been made on both sides of the ball. At the same time, the defense has unsurprisingly taken center stage due to the dangerous pass rush duo of defensive ends Nic Scourton and Shemar Stewart, who are both poised to wreak havoc on most of the quarterbacks they face.

However, under new offensive coordinator Collin Klein, starting quarterback Conner Weigman, who is coming off a season-ending injury after four games last season, has continued to adjust to his scheme, which will feature tight end-heavy sets with more use of running backs in the passing game.

Avoiding Alabama and Ole Miss for the first time since entering the SEC back in 2012, the schedule is challenging but manageable if everything falls in place and the offense can consistently put more points on the board. While the national predictions for Texas A&M vary from 7 to even 10 wins, one analyst is much higher on the Aggie’s playoff chances.

According to CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm, Texas A&M is predicted to make the College Football Playoffs as an 8-seed. The Aggies would face 9-seed Penn State with a chance to face No. 1-seed Georgia in late December.

Just a thought: it’s very interesting how high some analysts are on Texas A&M’s playoff chances compared to those who view this season as a one-off because it is Mike Elko’s first season. However, this roster is too talented not to challenge every team they face every week, so Jerry Palm may be onto something.

Notre Dame left off Jerry Palm’s College Football Playoff projection

Pin this one on the bulletin board.

All Notre Dame has to do is win the games it’s supposed to win in 2024, and it very likely will make the College Football Playoff. At least that’s what most people seem to believe. However, one expert has dared to challenge that belief.

Jerry Palm, CBS Sports’ College Football Playoff expert, has released his projections for the first year of the expanded playoff. Unlike most experts, he doesn’t have the Irish in his bracket.

Palm also has released his projections for the remaining bowl games, and he has the Irish facing Oklahoma State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl, which would be a rematch of [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag]’s coaching debut in the Fiesta Bowl three years ago.

While the idea of the Irish eating a mascot as a postgame snack is fun to think about, it would signify disappointment in a season with high expectations. But it shows how the Irish won’t just be handed anything this season. They’ll need to earn their spot in the playoff, and it looks like that will involve proving some people wrong.

Texas A&M Basketball interestingly positioned in CBS Sports’ newest bracket update

In CBS Sports college basketball analyst Jerry Palm’s newest bracket, Texas A&M is listed as a “first four” team.

Texas A&M (13-8, 4-4 SEC) got back on track after escaping the red-hot Florida Gators 68-67 on Saturday afternoon, as veteran guard Tyrece Radford’s game-high 26 points included the game-winning basket in one of his more memorable and passionate performances in his Aggie career.

Looking to finally find some momentum and create a lasting win streak in conference play, every game is now of the utmost importance, starting with Wednesday’s road trip against the Missouri Tigers, who have yet to win a game in SEC play.

Looking ahead to next month’s NCAA Tournament, Texas A&M’s current positioning has been scattered across the board, remaining on the periphery in multiple brackets, including CBS Sports’ newest bracket update.

According to CBS Sports “Bracketologist” Jerry Palm, the Aggies are listed as one of eight “first four” teams during the first two days of action, positioned as an 11-seed facing the 11-seeded Michigan State Spartans. Hypothetically, with a victory over the Spartans, A&M would face 5th-seeded Dayton in Brooklyn, New York.

Aggies’ head coach Buzz Williams isn’t on the hot seat, but to continue building toward a successful future, earning a second consecutive tournament bid is absolutely vital to avoiding a significant step backward.

College Football Playoff projections after Week 10: Vols are still in

College Football Playoff projections after Week 10: The Vols are still in

No. 3 Tennessee (8-1, 4-1 SEC) played at No. 1 Georgia (9-0, 6-0 SEC) Saturday in Week 10.

Rankings reflect the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

The Vols are No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings, while Georgia is No. 3.

Georgia defeated the Vols, 27-13, at Sanford Stadium.

Tennessee’s 2022 regular-season schedule features home games against Ball State (W, 59-10), Akron (W, 63-6), Florida (W, 38-33), Alabama (W, 52-49), UT Martin (W, 65-24), Kentucky (W, 44-6) and Missouri.

The Vols’ 2022 schedule features road contests at Pittsburgh (W, 34-27 OT) in the second edition of the Johnny Majors ClassicLSU (W, 40-13), Georgia (L, 27-13), South Carolina and Vanderbilt.

Following Week 10 games, Jerry Palm of CBS Sports released updated College Football Playoff rankings.

Palm has the Vols listed in his current College Football Playoff projections. Palm’s projections following Week 10 are listed below.

Which Bowl game does CBS Sports see Florida playing after losing to Georgia?

Jerry Palm of CBS Sports still sees Florida playing in a bowl game this year, but which one?

Florida may have covered the spread against Georgia on Saturday, but a three-score loss doesn’t have fans confident that the Gators will be playing in a bowl game this year.

Jerry Palm of CBS Sports isn’t buying that narrative just yet, though. He has the Gators playing against Washington in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 17, according to his latest bowl game projections.

The Vegas Bowl has become a popular prediction for Florida’s postseason contest. With tie-ins to the SEC and Pac-12, a six-win Florida team would fit the bill nicely for this game. That means Florida’s opponent will likely have a location advantage, being from the West Coast, but Gator Nation is vast and will show up en masse to support their program.

Currently, Palm sees the Gators matching up with the Washington Huskies, which would be the first matchup between the two since 1989. Florida lost the Freedom Bowl matchup 34-7 that year, so this could be an opportunity for revenge.

UF still has to become bowl eligible, though. With four games left and a 4-4 record, the Gators will have to win twice against Texas A&M, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Florida State. The Commodores are the only one of those four that seems like a sure-fire win, so Florida can’t afford to slack off down the stretch.

CBS Sports projects Florida to face off with a Pac-12 opponent come bowl season

After eight weeks of college football, Florida is projected to play in a bowl game out west against a Pac-12 opponent.

Jerry Palm of CBS Sports has released his post-Week 8 bowl projections, and he has the Florida Gators facing off with the Washington Huskies on Dec. 17 in the Las Vegas Bowl.

The Las Vegas Bowl has become a popular projection for the Gators, who currently sit at 4-3 on the season with No. 1 Georgia, Texas A&M, No. 25 South Carolina and Florida State left on the schedule. Assuming Florida beats Vanderbilt in November, the Gators will need to win just one of those four games to become bowl eligible.

Last year, Florida played in the Gasparilla Bowl against UCF in Tampa. The in-state game made it easy for fans of either school to attend and there was plenty of regional interest in the annoying little brother versus struggling older brother matchup. Playing out west against a Pac-12 school might make it a bit harder on the Florida faithful, but there are Gators fans all over the country.

Palm projects every bowl game and has Georgia, Ohio State, Clemson and Tennessee in the College Football Playoff. Alabama is the first team out and Michigan is No. 6. Interestingly, Palm sees Florida State matching up with Utah in the postseason. The Gators took down the Utes to start the regular season and will end it against the Seminoles.

Of course, these projections could look a lot different in a week if Florida can pull off the upset against Georgia this weekend.
