Falcons to retain assistant coach Jerry Gray, per report

The Atlanta Falcons are expected to retain assistant coach Jerry Gray, per report

The Atlanta Falcons are expected to retain another key member of last year’s coaching staff. According to a report from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, assistant head coach Jerry Gray has agreed to a contract extension that will keep him in Atlanta.

Gray, 61, joined the Falcons in 2023 after spending three years in Green Bay as the defensive backs coach/defensive pass-game coordinator from 2021-2023.

The Falcons have hired two Los Angeles Rams assistants as their offensive and defensive coordinators. Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson and assistant head coach Jimmy Lake will join Raheem Morris’ staff in Atlanta. The team is also keeping special teams coordinator Marquice Williams in the same role.

Morris’ introductory press conference takes place this Monday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Packers CB Jaire Alexander credits coach Jerry Gray, who left for Falcons this offseason

Jaire Alexander said he was “sad” about Jerry Gray leaving the Packers, and he credited the coach for much of his development as a player.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

The start of mandatory minicamp was bittersweet for Packers corner Jaire Alexander. On one hand, he was back on the field with his teammates for the first time since last season. On the other, one of his favorite coaches was nowhere to be found.

Jerry Gray coached Green Bay’s defensive backs for the last three seasons. Over that span, the Packers’ secondary never finished outside the top 10 in passing yards allowed. So, when his contract expired after the 2022 season, it didn’t take long for him to find a new home.

Gray was initially considered for the Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator opening. But when that job went to Ryan Nielsen, he was hired to be their defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator.

Around the facility, players referred to Gray as “OG”. It’s an appropriate nickname for someone with 26 years of NFL coaching experience under their belt, but it was especially fitting for Gray, who had the utmost respect from the guys he was leading. So, naturally, it was an emotional day for the team’s top corner when he heard the coach who had been an integral part of his development was leaving.

“Man, I was sad. I almost shed a tear,” Alexander said after Tuesday’s practice. “He’s helped me out through a lot. I mean, he’s gotten me pretty much to where I’m at. I’m not saying him solely, but he’s helped me out a lot. It was sad, but I’ll see him again though.”

For Alexander, that reunion will come sooner rather than later when the Packers head to Atlanta for Week 2 of the upcoming season.

Losing a coach like Gray may not be felt right away, but according to Alexander, he isn’t the shutdown corner he is today without him. Before joining the Packers in 2020, Gray had a proven track record of turning defensive backs into premier players. Through five seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, he helped Xavier Rhodes and Harrison Smith become multiple-time Pro Bowlers and All-Pros. Gray also tutored the likes of Earl Thomas and Sean Taylor in previous stints around the league.

Fortunately for the Packers, Alexander received the same treatment. After one year under Gray, he was named to a Pro Bowl and received a second-team All-Pro bid. A shoulder injury limited Alexander to only four games in 2021, but it didn’t stop him from becoming the highest-paid corner in NFL history the ensuing offseason.

He followed that distinguished honor with another Pro Bowl and All-Pro in 2022.

Now, after sitting out all of OTAs, Alexander had to shake off some rust in his first practice back. He was beaten for a long touchdown by Christian Watson and was then bested by Romeo Doubs during a red zone drill.

Alexander didn’t mind, however. He knows the offense is going to need its top two receivers to perform even without Aaron Rodgers. Just like the defense will need him to play at an All-Pro level without Gray.

Packers expected to hire Cardinals CB coach Greg Williams

The Packers appear to have found a replacement for Jerry Gray. Per Aaron Wilson, the Packers will hire Cardinals CB coach Greg Williams.

The Green Bay Packers appear to have found a replacement for assistant coach Jerry Gray. According to Aaron Wilson, the Packers will hire Arizona Cardinals cornerbacks coach Greg Williams to Matt LaFleur’s staff.

Gray, who left for Atlanta, was the Packers defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator. It’s unclear what position Williams will take over in Green Bay, but it’s safe to assume his job will involve coaching defensive backs.

Williams, 46, spent the last four seasons as the Cardinals cornerbacks coach under defensive coordinator Vance Joseph. The two arrived in Arizona together after Williams spent the 2018 season as Joseph’s defensive backs coach in Denver.

As a player, Williams starred at North Carolina before spending time in the NFL, NFL Europe, the XFL and Arena Football League.

Williams was also the Chargers assistant secondary coach from 2013 to 2015 and the secondary coach of the Indianapolis Colts under Chuck Pagano from 2016 to 2017.

It’s possible Williams will only coach cornerbacks in Green Bay. The Packers have Ryan Downard on staff to coach the safeties.

Expect an official announcement on a finalized coaching staff from the Packers soon.

Aubrey Pleasant provides candidate to replace Jerry Gray on Packers defensive staff

Matt LaFleur and the Packers could look internally to replace Jerry Gray as the defensive backs coach.

The Green Bay Packers are in need of a new defensive backs coach after Jerry Gray – who held the title for three years on Matt LaFleur’s staff – left Green Bay for a new position with the Atlanta Falcons. The move officially happened Tuesday.

Could Aubrey Pleasant provide an obvious internal candidate?

LaFleur and the Packers brought Pleasant on the staff as an offensive consultant to end the 2022 season, believing his knowledge of the defensive side – and in the secondary, in particular – could help the Packers take a step forward down the stretch.

It’s certainly possible LaFleur will now turn to Pleasant to replace Gray as one of his top defensive assistants under coordinator Joe Barry.

The former Badger has the connection and the experience.

Pleasant played in the secondary at the University of Wisconsin and has experience coaching defensive backs at both the college and NFL levels. Between 2017 and 2020, Pleasant coached cornerbacks for the Los Angeles Rams. In 2021 and parts of 2022, he was the defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator for the Detroit Lions. While in Washington as a quality control assistant, he worked directly under respected secondary coaches Raheem Morris and Perry Fewell.

More importantly, Pleasant’s path through Los Angeles meant working with both LaFleur and Barry as a member of Sean McVay’s staff with the Rams.

Other internal candidates to replace Gray include Ryan Downard, who spent last season coaching safeties after three seasons as the assistant defensive backs coach, and Justin Hood, who has been a defensive quality control assistant for two seasons in Green Bay after spending two years as the defensive backs coach at Kent State.

Packers lose assistant coach Jerry Gray to Falcons

Former Packers assistant coach Jerry Gray is leaving for Atlanta.

Jerry Gray, who spent the last three seasons as a top assistant coach on defense for Matt LaFleur, is leaving Green Bay for Atlanta.

The Falcons hired Gray to be the team’s new assistant head coach/defense.

Gray was hired as the Packers defensive backs coach in 2020. LaFleur promoted him to defensive passing game coordinator in 2021.

Gray had an expiring contract with the Packers and was free to leave.

Although LaFleur wasn’t expecting coaching staff changes, the Packers will now need to find a new defensive backs coach and a new passing game coordinator under Joe Barry. In terms of internal candidates, Ryan Downard coaches the safeties and quality control assistant Justin Hood has a background in the secondary at the college level. Aubrey Pleasant, who joined the Packers late in the year after a stint in Detroit, is another potential option.

#Falcons hire former Packers passing game coordinator Jerry Gray as their new assistant head coach/defense

The Atlanta Falcons have hired former Packers passing game coordinator Jerry Gray for the position of assistant head coach/defense, the team announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Gray spent the past three years in Green Bay as the defensive backs coach, and was promoted to passing game coordinator in 2021.

The Falcons hired Ryan Nielsen as defensive coordinator on Friday, but the team has yet to officially introduce him. Nielsen spent the last six seasons as an assistant with the New Orleans Saints, serving as DL coach, assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator.

Packers assistant coach Jerry Gray interviewing with Bears, Falcons

The Green Bay Packers could be losing a top assistant coach on the defensive side of the ball.

The Green Bay Packers could be losing a top assistant coach on the defensive side of the ball.

According to Jonathan Jones of The Athletic, Packers pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach Jerry Gray will interview with the Chicago Bears for a spot on Matt Eberflus’ staff and with the Atlanta Falcons for the team’s vacant defensive coordinator job.

It’s currently unclear what position Gray would be getting in Chicago. The Falcons are attempting to replace defensive coordinator Dean Pees, who retired.

Gray has been in Green Bay since the start of the 2020 season. He coached defensive backs in 2020 but was promoted to pass game coordinator/defensive backs coach in 2021.

Under Gray’s guidance, first-round pick Jaire Alexander has been a second-team All-Pro during two of the last three seasons.

Gray has eight years of experience as a defensive coordinator and could be ready to lead a defense again at the NFL level. He has 23 years of experience coaching defensive backs.

Gray ranks second in command behind Joe Barry on the defensive side in Green Bay. The Packers would likely have to make an outside hire to replace his role.

Bears request interview with former player and Commanders DBs coach Chris Harris

Former Bears safety Chris Harris may return to Chicago once again, only this time as a defensive coach.

The Chicago Bears have a history of bringing back Chris Harris as a player and now they’re interested in doing it again, only this time as a coach.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Bears have requested to interview Harris, who is the defensive backs coach for the Washington Commanders. It’s their second interview request for a defensive coach following their reported interest in Green Bay Packers defensive backs coach Jerry Gray.

Harris is no stranger to Chicago. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL Draft and became a key starter for the Bears during the peak Lovie Smith years from 2005 to 2006. He was traded to the Carolina Panthers after two seasons, but came back to Chicago in 2010 in another trade as they made the playoffs once again, with Harris earning second-team All-Pro honors that year.

The reunion was short lived, however, as Harris lasted another half a season before he was released and officially retired in 2013. He immediately went into coaching and wound up back with the Bears for two seasons as a quality control coach from 2013-2014 during Marc Trestman’s tenure.

From there, Harris climbed the coaching ranks. He was the assistant defensive backs coach for the Los Angeles Chargers from 2016-2019 and joined Ron Rivera’s staff in Washington as their defensive backs coach in 2020. Harris has been a rising star since then, getting looks for defensive coordinator positions over the last couple of years.

Now, another return to Chicago could be on the horizon for Harris. The Bears have an opening on their coaching staff as defensive backs and cornerbacks coach James Rowe left the team to coach at the University of South Florida, but the exact title and position he would interview for has yet to be determined. Either way, the Bears are doing their homework on candidates and there could be more interview requests on the way.

Report: Bears ask to interview Packers DBs coach Jerry Gray

The Bears have reportedly requested permission to interview Packers DBs coach Jerry Gray for a position on their coaching staff.

The Chicago Bears are reportedly looking to a division rival to fill a vacancy on their defensive staff. According to CBS NFL insider Jonathan Jones, the Bears have requested permission to interview Green Bay Packers defensive backs coach/passing game coordinator Jerry Gray. He also has an interview with the Atlanta Falcons for their defensive coordinator position.

Gray was a star defensive back in the 1980s and has been coaching in the NFL since the 1990s, primarily with defensive backs but also a couple stints as defensive coordinator. He’s coached for a number of teams, including Tennessee, Buffalo, Washington, and Seattle.

More recently, Gray has had a home in the NFC North. From 2014-2019, he was the defensive backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings. He helped develop players such as Harrison Smith and Xavier Rhodes as they earned multiple Pro Bowl honors. In 2020, he went to the Packers in the same capacity and had success there as well, particularly with Jaire Alexander as he grew into one of the best cornerbacks in the league during his tenure.

Now, the Bears are calling for Gray’s services and while Jones doesn’t list the role, it could be for the vacant defensive backs coach position after James Rowe left for South Florida at the end of the year. Because it would be a lateral move, the Packers can deny the interview request. Gray is allowed to interview for the Falcons defensive coordinator freely.

If Gary doesn’t get the Falcons defensive coordinator job, perhaps he would take an opening with the Bears should the Packers grant permission. Time will tell.
