Former Michigan football LB selects new transfer school

Best of luck to him! #GoBlue

Michigan football has managed to keep much of its roster intact despite all of the coaching moves this offseason. But it still had some departures. Wolverines fans certainly are reeling from safety Keon Saab’s decision to transfer, while others have gone somewhat under the radar.

Most fans of the maize and blue likely don’t know the name Jerome Nichols, but the four-year linebacker who walked on in Ann Arbor had a handful of special teams snaps over his Michigan tenure, but he decided to try his hand elsewhere, despite being a Michigan native.

On Sunday, Nichols chose his next school of choice, committing to Florida A&M.

In four years, Nichols managed to see the field in only two games, notching 11 snaps total. In his seven snaps in 2023, the inside linebacker managed two tackles — both on special teams — against Indiana.

The Belleville, Michigan, native will get a fresh start and chance to prove himself at an historically black college and university.

Michigan football suffered its first casualty of the Jim Harbaugh departure, though it’s hoping not to get any more in the 30-day transfer portal window that is now open.

Though he only appeared in three games and for 11 snaps (seven in the Indiana game last year), Belleville (Michigan) Renaissance linebacker Jerome Nichols is looking for greener pastures — and assuredly playing time. Nichols was a 2022 letterwinner and a 2021 Academic All-Big Ten honoree with two tackles to his name.

Following fellow walk-ons, running back Leon Franklin and wide receiver Sam Staruch, Nichols announced via X (formerly Twitter) that he’s entering the transfer portal.

Nichols has two years of eligibility remaining. A Michigan legacy via his mother having graduated in 1996, he played locally at Detroit Renaissance High School and was a Detroit Free Press All-Detroit honorable mention in 2019. He arrived in Ann Arbor during the COVID-19 year but didn’t see game action until 2022.

Detroit (MI) Renaissance doesn’t have the cache like its counterparts Cass Tech and King. There have been few who have dressed in burgundy and white that have worn the maize and blue, but the program does have some Division I-level players. Most recently, this week, defensive back Robert Army, a three-star, committed to Iowa State.

But now, one of his former teammates will get to don that winged helmet.

Jerome Nichols is a 6-foot-1, 225-pound H-back and linebacker. He might not have the accolades or recruiting profiles that some other notable recruits in the area have. But the 2020 athlete got the opportunity to come to Michigan as a preferred walk-on, and he accepted it, announcing on Twitter on Thursday that he’s committing to be a Wolverine.

As noted on his Hudl film, Nichols is also dedicated in the classroom, boasting a 3.5 GPA, and was looking to play in the Ivy League.

He has offers from Valparaiso and Northwood, according to The D Zone.
