Report: Patriots’ Jerod Mayo to interview for Raiders’ head-coaching job

The 35-year-old is garnering some serious interest throughout the NFL.

New England Patriots de facto defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo will reportedly interview for the Las Vegas Raiders’ head-coaching job on Tuesday, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Mayo, 35, spent eight seasons playing for the Patriots and he’s been an assistant coach for the past three years. He’s helped Bill and Steve Belichick call plays for one of the league’s most consistent defensive groups. The Patriots defense finished second in points per game (17.8), second in interceptions (23) and fourth in yards per game (310.8) this season.

Mayo interviewed with the Denver Broncos already, but they dwindled their list down to three candidates and he didn’t make the cut.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter also named Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as a potential candidate for the Raiders’ job. This is just another offseason where Patriots coaches and front office members are targeted for positions outside of the organization.

Most importantly for the Patriots, Bill Belichick plans to stick around for at least another year.

Bart Scott says Jerod Mayo doesn’t yet deserve to land head-coaching gig

Should more experienced NFL coaches get the opportunity before Jerod Mayo?

Jerod Mayo is one of a few New England Patriots coaches or front office members that are garnering attention from outside teams.

Mayo, 35, played his entire career with the Patriots and then he became the inside linebackers coach in 2019. He’s also held the responsibility of calling defensive plays alongside Steve and Bill Belichick. With eight openings at head coach, Mayo’s name has been tossed around as a serious candidate.

His name has been linked to the Las Vegas Raiders and Denver Broncos thus far. There are many candidates looking for head-coaching gigs and many of them have much more experience than Mayo.

For this reason, ESPN’s Bart Scott believes Mayo doesn’t deserve the opportunity just yet.

“I don’t get that one. I think we give too much credit to these Bill Belichick assistants,” Scott said Tuesday on ESPN Radio. “I think he would be skipping the line in front of so many qualified people.  Whatever happened to Eric Bieniemy, what happened to Byron Leftwich, Todd Bowles? All these guys deserve opportunities more than Jerod Mayo. I’m sure he’s a young up-and-coming coach, it’s not his turn.”

The huge relief in the Patriots’ coaching staff situation is the fact that Bill Belichick plans to continue in his role.

Broncos’ updated coach interview schedule

By Saturday evening, the Broncos will have completed 10 head coach interviews.

The Denver Broncos have completed five head coach interviews so far and by Wednesday evening, the team will have completed two more.

By Saturday night, Denver will have interviewed all 10 candidates being considered for the job. Here’s an updated look at the team’s head coach interview schedule.

1. Lions DC Aaron Glenn (completed)
2. Packers QBs coach Luke Getsy (completed)
3. Packers OC Nathaniel Hackett (completed)
4. Cowboys OC Kellen Moore (completed)
5. Cowboys DC Dan Quinn (completed)
6. Patriots LBs coach Jerod Mayo (Jan. 19)
7. Eagles DC Jonathan Gannon (Jan. 19)
8. Bengals OC Brian Callahan (Jan. 20)
9. Rams OC Kevin O’Connell (Jan. 20)
10. Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy (Jan. 21)

Quinn is considered the favorite, presumably because of his experience working with Broncos general manager George Paton in the past. Quinn is also the only candidate on Denver’s list that has head coach experience.

After wrapping up their interviews this weekend, the Broncos could announce a new coach as early as next week. Denver is seeking a new coach after firing Vic Fangio at the conclusion of the 2021 season.

Houston Texans coaching search: Ranking the candidates

The Houston Texans are cycling through coaching candidates. Here is how they rank so far.

The Houston Texans coaching search has started up and there are four candidates who have caught their attention thus far.

General manager Nick Caserio told reporters on Jan. 14 that the organization is not on a timeline to hire a coach. Instead, the Texans are going to stay patient to make sure they get the right hire.

“I wouldn’t say there’s a timeline,” Caserio said. “We’ll be patient and however long it takes, it takes. When we have a solution that we feel comfortable about then we’ll go ahead.”

Here is a look at the four candidates who have drawn interest from Houston thus far.

Bill Belichick addresses interview requests for Patriots coaching staff

“We have a lot of good coaches. It’s not surprising that other teams would be interested in talking to them, or other staff members.”

Now that the offseason has officially begun for the New England Patriots, it’s time for coaches, front office members and scouts to garner interest from external teams.

Some of the names thrown into open positions this offseason include Jerod Mayo, Josh McDaniels and Eliot Wolf. McDaniels hasn’t accepted any interview requests, but he’s still a popular option throughout the NFL. Mayo has drawn heavy interest from the Houston Texans and he’s set to interview with the Denver Broncos. Wolf, who is currently the director of scouting, has received interest from the Chicago Bears.

The Patriots lost coaches like Brian Flores and Joe Judge in recent seasons, along with front office members like Nick Caserio and Monti Ossenfort. Bill Belichick is familiar with the turnover and he discussed it on Monday following the 47-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

“I don’t think it’s really my place to comment on other team’s jobs, or who they are looking for, or what they are doing or whatever. I’ll leave that to them,” Belichick said, via WEEI. “Whatever it is, obviously we’ll comply with and however those situations turn out, again, that’s generally speaking, out of our control. We’ll see what happens. If something happens then we’ll adjust to it and react to it.

“We have a lot of good coaches. It’s not surprising that other teams would be interested in talking to them, or other staff members — the same thing with the scouting staff. We basically have that every single year. How that goes and what will happen, again, I don’t know. That’s not my decision to make. Certainly, if there’s an opportunity for somebody that’s at a high level that we can’t provide here, I understand they would have to consider that. We’ll see what happens on that.”

Belichick plans to remain the Patriots’ coach in 2022 — leaving no uncertainty for the most important person in the organization.

Patriots’ Jerod Mayo set to interview with Broncos for head-coaching position

The Patriots’ de facto defensive coordinator is drawing heavy interest for head-coaching positions.

Jerod Mayo is an extremely popular candidate during an offseason that has eight vacant head-coaching positions in the NFL.

The New England Patriots de facto defensive coordinator is currently a “leading candidate” for the Houston Texans job. As of Monday following the 47-17 beatdown by the Buffalo Bills in the playoffs — Mayo is also set to interview with the Denver Broncos, per NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Mayo, 35, played in over 100 games for the Patriots and following his retirement, he became an assistant coach in 2019. He’s technically been the inside linebackers coach, but he’s helped Bill Belichick and Steve Belichick call defensive plays over the past two seasons.

On Monday, Belichick discussed the fact that Patriots staff will be targeted for new opportunities and positions.

“I don’t think it’s really my place to comment on other team’s jobs, or who they are looking for, or what they are doing or whatever. I’ll leave that to them,” he said, via WEEI.

Texans GM Nick Caserio says current coaching candidates did not trigger David Culley being fired

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio says the current crop of coaching candidates is not why the team fired coach David Culley.

The Houston Texans’ 4-13 record was settled; it didn’t need pending review from the league office to confirm the club had lost 28-25 to the Tennessee Titans in Week 18 at NRG Stadium.

Nevertheless the Texans waited until Thursday, Jan. 13 to decide they were going in another direction at coach by firing David Culley after one year.

During the three full days that passed after the Texans’ final regular season game, the Miami Dolphins fired coach Brian Flores. Other coaches that made it to the available section were the Minnesota Vikings’ Mike Zimmer.

However, it isn’t just the retread coaches that are available that make this particular cycle interesting. There are young, fresh minds in the game in San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, and New England Patriots inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo.

According to Texans general manager Nick Caserio, the crop of coaching candidates had nothing to do with the organization deciding to fire Culley on Thursday.

“Those are independent entities,” Caserio said. “I don’t think you make said decision based on all of a sudden something that has changed or something is different. I think you have to first start with your situation, evaluate it, make an honest assessment, make the decision and then if that so happens to be in conjunction with other things that happen in the league, that’s out of our control, out of my control. That’s really not the criteria to which, the lens through which you make those decisions. You have to look at everything as an independent entity.”

Even if the Texans didn’t make their decision regarding Culley because of the coaching candidates, they now become a part of the Texans’ plans moving forward. While they were independent from the decision on Culley, they are nevertheless intertwined with Houston’s coaching situation.

Did GM Nick Caserio hint at the Texans’ new coach?

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio may have provided a tell as to who the next coach might be in his Jan. 14 press conference.

HOUSTON — For the second consecutive year, the Houston Texans are searching for a new coach following the jettison of David Culley Thursday afternoon. Culley spent one season with the Texans, who ended the year with a 4-13 record.

For general manager Nick Caserio, the objective for his second coaching hire is to find someone who can get the Texans closer to some of the NFL’s most prominent franchises. While his next hire will likely be a disciple of Bill Belichick, Caserio may use the model of a rival coach in hopes of finding stability on the sidelines of NRG Stadium.

“No one respects what the Pittsburgh Steelers have done as a franchise more than myself — three head coaches over the course of Art Rooney’s ownership,” Caserio said. “When you look at coach [Mike] Tomlin, he was a coordinator for one year in Minnesota, and he was 30 something years old. People did not know he would be the coach who would not have a losing season in 15 years.”

Caserio added: “Forget about sports, Mike is as good of a leader in organizational management. I have a lot of respect and admiration for Tomlin.”

Caserio wants to replicate the faith —and success — Rooney had in Tomlin when the Steelers hired their Super Bowl-winning coach in 2007 — after one season as the Vikings’ defensive coordinator.

Prior to becoming the youngest head coach to win the Super Bowl in 2008, Tomlin had two stops as a defensive back coach with the Cincinnati Bengals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Most of the Texans’ candidates have an excessive background, except for New England Patriots’ linebackers coach Jerod Mayo — who could emerge as Houston’s top nominee for their coaching vacancy

Mayo has served as a Patriots’ position coach over the previous three seasons following his nine-year playing career with the organization. Similar to Tomlin in 2007, Mayo is an intriguing contender despite not having the same qualifications as his more experienced contemporaries.

According to Caserio, there is no timetable on the Texans’ head coaching hire and will choose a candidate based on who makes the organization comfortable.

“That’s the goal, and it is a difficult mountain top to reach,” Caserio said. “But that’s what we are striving for. We are not there yet, but we certainly made some incremental progress this year. Hopefully, we can continue to make more incremental progress and understand that change is going to be a part of it.”

In addition to Mayo, Brian Flores, former coach of the Miami Dolphins who was canned on Monday, is another leading candidate for the Texans coaching vacuity.

Report: Patriots LBs coach Jerod Mayo emerging as leading candidate for Texans

Jerod Mayo has popped up as a candidate for a few openings.

New England Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo is expected to emerge as a leading candidate for the Houston Texans, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Mayo has gotten an interview request from the Denver Broncos, according to multiple reports. The Bears were expected to show interest in Mayo, too, according to SI’s Albert Breer.

Mayo has been the Patriots’ inside linebackers coach since 2019, and because the Patriots have not had a defensive coordinator during that time, he has helped take on some of those duties, splitting with outside linebackers coach Steve Belichick and coach Bill Belichick. Mayo was also a two-time Pro Bowler for the Patriots during his playing career from 2008 to 2015.

Mayo has gone through one head-coaching interview: the Eagles’ vacancy in 2020.

“It was a great experience,” Mayo said this week. “I was able to go out there and talk a lot about football, talk a lot about different philosophies. It’s good to have those conversations whether it’s around leadership philosophy, or team philosophy, team structure, all that stuff. So I love talking ball, I love developing people.”

It helps, too, that Mayo has Belichick as a tutor for his upcoming interviews.

Broncos have 10 candidates for head coach opening

“We’re going to be thorough,” Broncos GM George Paton said of the team’s coach search. “We know this is a critical decision, and we’re going to get it right.”

After firing head coach Vic Fangio on Sunday, Denver Broncos general manager George Paton is now responsible for finding Fangio’s replacement.

So far, Paton has requested interviews with ten coach candidates.

“We’re excited to learn more about some of these great candidates,” Paton said during his end-of-season press conference on Jan. 9. “It’s going to be a comprehensive and a collaborative process to find the best head coach for the Broncos. We’re going to be thorough. We’re going to be open minded. We know this is a critical decision, and we’re going to get it right.”

Here is the list of known candidates:

1. Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy (52)
2. Cowboys DC Dan Quinn (51)
3. Lions DC Aaron Glenn (49)

4. Packers OC Nathaniel Hackett (42)
5. Eagles DC Jonathan Gannon (39)
6. Packers QBs coach Luke Getsy (37)
7. Bengals OC Brian Callahan (37)

8. Rams OC Kevin O’Connell (36)
9. Patriots LBs coach Jerod Mayo (35)
10. Cowboys OC Kellen Moore (33)

Most of the Broncos’ head coach interviews will happen next week, and Paton has said the team will take its time in its search, so fans shouldn’t expect a hire to happen immediately.
