Report: Lack of buyers results in ‘silence’ from Panthers at trade deadline

The “lack of an appetite” from the NFL’s contenders may have contributed to the Panthers’ inactivity at the trade deadline.

There may have been no demand for the Carolina Panthers’ supply.

This year’s trade deadline came and went without a peep from general manager Scott Fitterer and company, as the Panthers stood pat and did not make a deal. And that, according to Sports Illustrated senior NFL reporter Albert Breer, that may have been a result of a cold market.

He wrote on Tuesday evening:

Silence from New England, Carolina and Denver reflects, to me, a very short supply of buyers this year. I’ll dig this week into why it played out that way, because there were opportunities out there for teams that wanted to take a swing or two. In the end, there simply wasn’t a great appetite on the part of contenders to pick up the bat.

Breer also reported, nearly three weeks back, that the Panthers were listening to offers on a handful of players. That group included wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr., cornerback Donte Jackson, safety Jeremy Chinn and, to a much more complicated degree, outside linebacker Brian Burns.

But, unlike last year, the buyers weren’t buying what Carolina may have been selling.

NFL insider: Sounds like it’ll be a ‘quiet deadline day’ for Panthers

NFL Network insider Mike Garofolo: Unless something changes, sounds like it’s gonna be a quiet deadline day in Carolina.

Well, maybe something hasn’t come up for general manager Scott Fitterer, head coach Frank Reich and the Carolina Panthers over the last 24 hours.

According to NFL Network insider Mike Garofolo, the Panthers are not likely to make a move before today’s 4 p.m. ET trade deadline.

“It is quiet right now in Carolina,” Garofolo stated on Tuesday’s episode of The Insiders. “So something would really have to heat up for the Panthers to make a move. They did have that offer for Brian Burns last year—with regards to two first-round picks from the Rams as well as a little bit more on top of that, which would’ve been quite the haul. Still surprised that they turned that one down.

“So no indication that he is in any position to be moved right now. Unless something changes, sounds like it’s gonna be a quiet deadline day in Carolina.”

After a disappointing start to their 2023 campaign, the Panthers were viewed as possible sellers throughout the month of October. In addition to Burns, some rumored trade candidates included cornerback Donte Jackson, safety Jeremy Chinn and wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr.—who had been granted permission to seek a swap.

But, with the clock ticking away, it seems like there’s no deal for Fitterer to be in on at the moment.

Report: Teams being told Brian Burns is not available via trade

According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, teams are being told that Panthers OLB Brian Burns is not available via trade.

Charlotte’s Spider-Man may not be going far from home. In fact, he may not be going anywhere at all.

According to ESPN NFL insider Dan Graziano, the Carolina Panthers are telling teams that outside linebacker Brian Burns is not up for grabs. So, with the trade deadline now less than a week away, it feels as though the two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher is highly unlikely to be moved.

Burns is currently playing on his fifth-year option without a contract extension in hand. Carolina’s inability to ink their 25-year-old star to a long-term pact, while starting out at an NFL-worst 0-6 record, may have hungry contenders sniffing blood in the water.

Nonetheless, Burns is seemingly sitting tight, at least for now.

As for who could be on the move from Carolina, Graziano’s colleague and fellow ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler mentions several names in the very same article. Fowler notes that wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr., who was granted permission to seek a trade last week, is available while defensive backs Donte Jackson and Jeremy Chinn may garner enough interest to inspire a deal.

The Panthers have until 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday to strike any swaps.

Panthers’ updated 53-man roster after Tuesday’s flurry of moves

Gallery: Carolina Panthers’ updated 53-man roster after Tuesday’s flurry of moves

The Carolina Panthers’ active roster will look a lot different when the team hits the field this afternoon.

Tuesday brought a flurry of moves, including four adjustments to the injured reserve list and a pair of signees. In is guard Austin Corbett, offensive lineman Brett Toth and outside linebacker Luiji Vialin and out is tight end Giovanni Ricci, outside linebacker Yetur Gross-Matos and safety Jeremy Chinn.

So, here’s a fresh look at the updated 53-man program:

Panthers sign 2 players on Tuesday

The Panthers signed OL Brett Toth and OLB Luiji Vilain to their active roster on Tuesday.

Tuesday brought quite a bit of shelf work for the Carolina Panthers—who activated right guard Austin Corbett while also sending safety Jeremy Chinn, outside linebacker Yetur Gross-Matos and tight end Giovanni Ricci to injured reserve. So, in case you haven’t done the math, two spots needed to be filled.

As officially announced by the team, those spots have been filled by offensive lineman Brett Toth and outside linebacker Luiji Vilain. Toth and Vilain—who were members of the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings practice squads, respectively—will now join Carolina’s active roster.

Toth, who attended the United States Military Academy, broke into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Eagles in 2019. The Charleston, S.C. native played in a total of 17 games for Philadelphia between 2020 and 2021—recording 102 snaps at right tackle, 14 at right guard and 30 at center.

Vilain, fresh off an elevation into last night’s win over the San Francisco 49ers, has appeared in four games for the Vikings in the last two seasons. He’s amassed four tackles.

In addition, the Panthers also released offensive lineman Justin McCray from their practice squad.

Panthers place Jeremy Chinn, Yetur Gross-Matos, Giovanni Ricci on IR

The Panthers have placed S Jeremy Chinn, OLB Yetur Gross-Matos and TE Giovanni Ricci on injured reserve.

The Carolina Panthers made an unfortunate and uneven swap on Tuesday, and it had nothing to do with the upcoming trade deadline.

As announced by the team this afternoon, starting right guard Austin Corbett has been activated after missing the first six games of the season. But, they’ll be sending three players back the other way—as safety Jeremy Chinn (quadriceps), outside linebacker Yetur Gross-Matos (hamstring) and tight end Giovanni Ricci (shoulder) have all been placed on injured reserve.

ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter first shined a light on Chinn’s setback last week, revealing that the fourth-year defensive back sustained a “significant” quad injury in the Week 6 loss to the Miami Dolphins. Schefter also added that Chinn would be expected to miss up to six weeks, so his placement on IR isn’t much of a surprise.

Gross-Matos’ placement, however, is. Chinn’s fellow 2020 draftee was off to the best start of his pro career, as he racked up 2.5 sacks and five tackles for a loss through the team’s six outings.

Report: Jeremy Chinn still drawing trade interest despite quad injury

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Panthers S Jeremy Chinn is still drawing trade interest despite his quad injury.

Carolina Panthers safety Jeremy Chinn may be damaged goods, at least temporarily. But that might not stop some teams from calling about him.

ESPN senior NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported on Friday morning that Chinn, who is currently dealing with a quad injury, may still be a target at the trade deadline. Fowler notes:

Chinn suffered a quad injury that could complicate his trade market should the Panthers choose to try and move him, but it doesn’t preclude a deal from getting done. He’ll be back before the end of the season off an injury that ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports will take up to six weeks to heal. The injury is non-surgical, and Chinn is considered a fast healer.

There’s interest in Chinn, who is in a contract year and only played 28 snaps the past two weeks. He wants to play.

The fourth-year defender has thus far played the lowest rate of snaps in his NFL career. Chinn has seen the field for 52 percent of the defense’s looks through six weeks—a notable decline from his 97 percent in 2020, 99 percent in 2021 and 91 percent in 2022.

As mentioned by Fowler, Chinn could miss a month and a half due to his setback—which would, presumably, lessen any type of return for Carolina. Nonetheless, if interest persists, a deal could make sense for both Chinn and the 0-6 Panthers.

Panthers reportedly received trade inquiry on Donte Jackson

The Panthers have reportedly received a trade inquiry on CB Donte Jackson.

If the Carolina Panthers are ready to make some deals ahead of this year’s trade deadline, they may be closer to holding a garage sale as opposed to going door to door.

According to ESPN senior NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, the 0-6 Panthers could just let the moves come to them—as they are reportedly not in “full trade mode,” but are open to inquiries. In fact, they might’ve had one already.

Fowler writes:

The Panthers also have received an inquiry on cornerback Donte Jackson, who’s on a reasonable contract ($1.08 million base salary this year, with a $4 million base in 2024 along with $5.7 million in roster and per-game bonuses). But quality corners are hard to give up, so he’s considered less available than the other two [Wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. and safety Jeremy Chinn].

Jackson is currently on the second season of the three-year, $35.1 million extension he inked last spring. While he hasn’t exactly performed up to the pact, the former second-rounder is a relatively valuable piece to a depleted defense—especially one that was already paper-thin in its secondary.

So, it seems that the Panthers may have to be moved in order to move the sixth-year veteran and team leader.

Panthers fans react to news of Jeremy Chinn’s quad injury

Panthers fans react to news of Jeremy Chinn’s quad injury

There are two things the Carolina Panthers have in spades this season—losses and injuries. And on Wednesday, they stacked up another one of the latter.

As first reported by ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, safety Jeremy Chinn sustained a “significant” quad injury that could keep him out up to six weeks. If true, Carolina will be down yet another key player on defense—with fellow safeties Vonn Bell and Xavier Woods as well as cornerback Jaycee Horn and linebacker Shaq Thompson also dealing with their own setbacks.

Here are how distraught Panthers fans reacted to the latest gut punch:

Report: Jeremy Chinn expected to miss up to six weeks with quad injury

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Panthers S Jeremy Chinn is expected to miss up to six weeks with a “significant” quad injury.

The Carolina Panthers may have just lost yet another member of their defense.

As first reported by ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, safety Jeremy Chinn has sustained a “significant” quad injury that is expected to keep him out for “up to six weeks.” Schefter also noted that Chinn is not expected to undergo surgery.

This reported setback is just the latest bump in a rough 2023 campaign for both the Panthers and Chinn, who has been playing at the lowest rate of defensive snaps in his four-year career. The former second-round pick has appeared in approximately 52 percent of the unit’s looks thus far—a stark drop-off from his 97 percent in 2020, 99 percent in 2021 and 91 percent in 2022.

Chinn’s underwhelming attendance record can be attributed to what’s been a less-than-perfect fit in defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero’s new scheme. Evero recently explained the safety’s lack of snaps to reporters.

“Specialized packages for him,” Evero said last Thursday. “We’re obviously trying to play him and Troy [Hill] at the nickel position, and then have Jeremy in some of the dime positions. Again, it’s almost comin’ back to the situation on first and second down. Gettin’ more third downs is how we get him on the field, obviously. And then, some of those specialized first- and second-down deals, too. Our execution level, our ability to play the run game better, get into more pass situations is going to allow that to happen.”

The Panthers defense also has starting safeties Vonn Bell (quadriceps) and Xavier Woods (hamstring) on the mend as well as cornerback Jaycee Horn (hamstring) and linebacker Shaq Thompson (fibula).
