Boston Celtics 2020-21 individual players grades: Jeff Teague

While his time with the Celtics did not go as well as hoped, it wasn’t all bad for the veteran floor general.

Now that the 2020-21 Boston Celtics season is firmly in the rear-view mirror, it’s possible to spend some time taking stock of how each player did with the opportunity he had.

To that end, we are grading every player who put in time on the basketball court for the Celtics this season, including all 15 members of the regular roster, both two-way players and the players the team cut or traded away. That’s 21 players altogether, and today’s focus is veteran point guard Jeff Teague. Traded away to the Orlando Magic to make way for veteran shooting guard Evan Fournier at the 2021 NBA trade deadline, Teague did not live up to hopes he’d be a capable backup so late in his career.

Even so, there were some positives to his tenure with the Celtics, so let’s dive into his 2020-21 season assessment to take stock.

Grading the Celtics trade deadline deals in a vacuum, and in context

What Boston did on Thursday can look pretty different depending on how you’re viewing it.

The Boston Celtics made their first midseason deals in half a decade on Thursday’s trade deadline, dealing away several players for a trio of new ones in the first such deal since fan favorite point guard Isaiah Thomas came to town in 2015.

It saw the Celtics send out beloved multi-season players like Daniel Theis and Javonte Green as well as relative newcomer Jeff Teague in exchange for Evan Fournier, Mo Wagner and Luke Kornet. And while the team is probably better-balanced now than at was on Wednesday, just how should we grade these trades? There are at least two ways of looking at them we can think of — in a vacuum just considering the present and in the context of the last several seasons and those to come.

With that in mind, let’s grade the two trades.

Celtics land Kornet, Wagner, trade Theis, Green, Teague to complete deadline deals

Boston’s roster underwent considerable change today.

The Boston Celtics wrapped up their trade deadline deals by sending big man Daniel Theis and wing Javonte Green to the Chicago Bulls for wing Luke Kornet and center Mo Wagner along with cash considerations, as well as veteran guard Jeff Teague to the Orlando Magic to complete the trade for shooting guard Evan Fournier, according to multiple reports.

Former Celtics assistant Ryan McDonough shared that Kornet and Wagner will become Celtics as part of a three-team deal between the Bulls, Boston and Washington Wizards that sees Boston send $1.3 million to Chicago in cash. The Athletic’s Jared Weiss and Josh Robbins relate the Celtics also sent Teague to the Magic, who will waive him.

Boston will create a $5 million traded player exception (TPE) with the Theis deal, absorbing Wagner into one of its existing TPEs.

Jeff Teague tells heartfelt story about Brad Stevens ‘saving his life’

Jeff Teague and Brad Stevens met about 15 years ago. Teague says it’s made all the difference in the world.

It may have taken 15 years longer than Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens may have wanted, but he finally landed Jeff Teague.

Finally, the two are on the same side.

In an interview with NBC Sports Boston, Teague, who signed with the Celtics this past offseason after Stevens assisted with his recruitment, revealed that the two have a long, unknown history.

According to the guard, while completing his high school basketball career in his native Indianapolis, Stevens — who was coaching at Butler University at the time — was hot on Teague’s trail. Ranked among the top point guards in the class, Stevens tried unsuccessfully to get Teague to commit to Butler University, but the point guard ultimately landed at Wake Forest.

Still, one encounter with Stevens, Teague says, saved his life.

For years, the young guard had been hiding his report cards (and low grades) from his parents, and a stern talking-to from Stevens convinced Teague to take his academics as seriously as his performance on the basketball court.

According to Teague, Stevens told Teague in unequivocal terms that he wouldn’t make it to college, much less the NBA, unless he brought his grades up, and Stevens also blew the whistle on the young guard, notifying Teague’s father of his son’s poor performance in the classroom.

Thereafter, Teague got his act together and played two standout years at Wake Forest before being drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in 2009.

Now entering his 12th NBA season, Teague’s amassed about $97 million in career earnings, so it’s probably safe to say he owes his new coach some commission.

Teague tells the story in his own words to NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg.

“I knew Brad since high school, he actually changed my whole life, basically… Because I had a path that I wasn’t really focused on school as much. I played basketball, obviously, but school wasn’t my favorite thing to do. So he pulled me into a room at Butler as a sophomore in front of my dad and he basically showed him my grades. I had been hiding report cards for some years. And basically just told me, ‘If you want the opportunity to play college basketball, you have to bring your grades up.’ And my dad not seeing my grades for a couple of years, he was pretty mad about that.”

Since then, Teague says, he’s had a heartfelt appreciation for Stevens. The two have been competing against one another in the NBA since Stevens was hired by the Celtics in 2013, and Teague has often made it his point of duty to tell the coach to his face that he saved his life. Stevens has mostly dismissed the praise as overly dramatic.

To Teague, however, there’s an incredible amount of gratitude.

“I had to get my act together… And every time we play the Celtics in the past I would tell Brad, ‘Hey, thank you for saving my life,’ and he would look at me like shut up, whatever man…”

Perhaps it’s serendipity, but 15 years after the life-changing chat, Teague will finally have the opportunity to play for Stevens.

Maybe now, in the NBA, they can change each other’s lives for the better. Maybe, just maybe, a championship can be brought to Boston that’s been in the making for more than a decade.

WATCH: new Celtic Jeff Teague’s preseason debut vs Philadelphia 76ers

The newest veteran floor general on Boston’s roster poured in 18 points in his Celtic debut, going 4-of-4 from deep.

Jeff Teague may be the newest veteran point guard on the Boston Celtics’ roster, but he played like it’s a post he’s held for years — precisely why the team’s front office elected to bring on the former Atlanta Hawk.

With 12 seasons’ experience to his resumé, Teague was every bit the calm and collected floor general the Celtics need to keep the ship running smoothly in Kemba Walker’s absence, which may extend well into January as he rehabilitates an often-balky knee. The Wake Forest product was the picture of efficiency in his stead on Tuesday’s preseason opener vs. the Philadelphia 76ers, shooting a sizzling 7-of-9 overall and a perfect 4-of-4 from beyond the arc.

Jeff Teague thinks Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum are both superstars

The 12-year veteran thinks quite highly of his young teammates.

New Boston Celtics floor general Jeff Teague spoke with the media on Saturday after a practice session at Auerbach Center, talking about how the team plans to put the 12-season veteran to work for the team in the absence of starting point guard Kemba Walker, how the abbreviated nature of this season’s training camp is impacting team chemistry and several other issues.

As things tend to when talking about the Celtics, several questions fielded by the Indiana native revolved around Boston’s focal points on the wing, teammates Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, about which the Wake Forest product had plenty to say.

Teague revealed he’d learned a few things about the pair since joining the team in free agency, despite knowing them casually through the league.

“I knew they were really good players,” offered the former Demon Deacon. “I know they both play really hard on both sides of the floor.”

“Both are leaders on the floor — both lead in different ways, but I didn’t know they were that close as friends and that they communicated a lot like that but they are the players that I thought they were and I think they’re both really good players and I think they’re both superstars.”

No faint praise, that.

Brown in particular forged a bond with teague going back to his first stint with the Hawks, where the veteran would sometimes sit in on the Georgia native’s games in high school.

“He’s one of our leaders in the NBA,” said Teague of Brown with a nod to his activism and engagement with the Players Association more generally.

“Off the court, we all know what he does, what he brings to the table — his voice, his activism. And he’s a talented player, a talented person off the court. He’s got a great heart. When I first got who’s the first guy to call me and tell me if I needed anything, he’d show me around the city and let me know anything, but that’s just the kind of person that he is. Since I’ve been here, he’s texted me every day to see if I was cool, if I needed anything, where to go eat, what’s a cool spot to order from and things like that.”

“That’s just the kind of person he is; I think we all know that he’s a special person,” Teague added.

And it’s not just Brown; the duo work extraordinarily well together — and with others.

“They do a great job of listening,” he explained. “They take advice; it’s a back and forth thing.”

“I know how talented they are, and how much they mean to the team. So I just try to get my point in if I can see something. I’ll try to let them know what I see, and vice-versa if they see something, they let me know. But you have got to find your role, and for them, they’re going to be here for years to come, and I’ve just got to find ways I can help them be better. Obviously, they’re going to help me be better, but that’s my thing, trying to help them be the players that they can be, and this team to be the team they can be.”

“It should be a great year,” he added.

Jeff Teague says Celtics have ‘capability of going to the championship’

The 12-season NBA vet believes this iteration of the Celtics have the goods to get to the NBA Finals.

It’s probably safe to say that last season did not go as planned for new Boston Celtics point guard Jeff Teague, with him ending up bouncing between the Minnesota Timberwolves and trying to stay positive after being dealt back to the Atlanta Hawks at a nadir, a team he left in pursuit of winning opportunities.

With the Celtics this season, he might have found not only a winning team but a contending one. He may also have found a club that will need his services considerably, especially early in the season as veteran point guard Kemba Walker rehabs an often-balky knee.

Speaking with team reporter Amanda Pflugrad, the Wake Forest product shared his thoughts about joining the storied franchise.

“I was just excited for the opportunity,” offered Teague.

“Watching them in a bubble and having a chance to try to make it to the to the championship and losing to [the] Miami [Heat], I always thought there was an opportunity I could come in and try to help the team. It was a place that I kind of circled in free agency.”

“I’m excited to have opportunity to be here,” he emphasized.

Teague also revealed he’s very excited to play with the team’s two young star wings, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.

“Two really talented players, two stars, in my opinion,” noted the former Atlanta Hawk. “Also having Kemba Walker, another star, I knew that this team would be really good. I just wanted to do my part, man, I’ve been a league for 12 years, I want to be on a winning team.”

“I feel like this team has the capability of going to the championship, and that’s what I’m playing for,” finished the Indiana native.

Long a fan of teammate Kemba Walker back to his days at UConn, and with a coach in Brad Stevens who has long been a fan of Teague, the makings of a potentially special backcourt is potentially in the making.

And, added to Walker’s veteran presence, the former Demon Deacon is an ideal mentor to the many younger guards on the roster looking to make their mark in the NBA as Teague has.
