VFL Jeff Francis now coaching middle school football.

KNOXVILLE — Former University of Tennessee quarterback Jeff Francis is the head coach of Knoxville’s newest middle school football team.

Francis, who played at UT between 1985-88, is now coaching for a middle school team in Knoxville’s West High School’s feeder program. The West team is in the Knoxville Area’s Middle-school Aged Conference.

The league was founded in 2019 by Nathan Meeks and the Rebels will join charter members Alcoa, Bearden, Carter, Karns, Gibbs, Farragut and Halls.

Francis started two seasons for the Volunteers and played for head coach Johnny Majors. He left UT as the school’s all-time leader in passing yards and completions.

The former Vol was drafted by the Los Angeles Raiders in 1989 and was on their developmental squad. The Raiders waived him in 1990 and he went on to have a brief career with the Cleveland Browns.

He has coached youth football in Knoxville for several years and previously served as a sideline reporter for the Vol Network.
