Browns join ’87 Patriots to start 5 different QBs in a season

When Jeff Driskel starts in Week 18 for the Browns, he will be their fifth different starting QB this season

Jeff Driskel gets the call to start at quarterback on Sunday when the Cleveland Browns play the Cincinnati Bengals.

With the Browns safely locked into the fifth playoff spot, Kevin Stefanski is not going to risk injury to 38-year-old Joe Flacco.

Driskel becomes the fifth different player to start at quarterback for the Browns in the 2023 regular season.

The others are Flacco, PJ Walker, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, and Deshaun Watson.

Another team that started 5 quarterbacks was the 1987 New England Patriots, possibly the only one.

Those starters were: Steve Grogan, Tom Ramsey, Tony Eason, Bob Bleier, and Doug Flutie.

For those of you who don’t remember Bleier, who split two starts in the strike-disrupted season:

Bob Bleier was one of the most prolific passers in Richmond football history, finishing his career first on the Spiders’ career lists with 1,169 career attempts, 672 completions, 8,057 passing yards and 54 passing touchdowns from 1983-86. Bleier owned three of the top five passing seasons in school history. He was Second Team All-Yankee Conference in 1986 and played in the Blue-Gray Game following that season. Bleier played for the New England Patriots of the National Football League in 1987.

Browns starting fifth QB of the season on pseudo-bye week vs. Bengals

The Browns will field their fifth different quarterback of the season in what is turning into another bye week.

As the Cleveland Browns get set to take on the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, they will start quarterback Jeff Driskel.

With their playoff spot already locked up, and with the fifth seed secured, the Browns are set to rest the majority of their starters on Sunday. This includes quarterback Joe Flacco, who is on a torrid pace with the Browns, and who they must protect for the playoffs.

Driskel, who was just signed off of the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad, actually got his NFL career underway with the Bengals. He has started a total of 11 games over his six-year career, including five with the Bengals as a rookie in 2018.

P.J. Walker, who has started three games for the Browns this season, will once again serve as the backup with Dorian Thompson-Robinson on Injured Reserve. If anything, this is an indication that Cleveland may not feel comfortable remaining one injury away from putting Walker back under center.

Driskel will become the fifth different starting quarterback to start for the Browns this season. Can head coach Kevin Stefanski set a record as the first coach to win with five different quarterbacks in the same season and make the playoffs?

Browns add QB depth by signing veteran Jeff Driskel

With only P.J. Walker behind Joe Flacco at quarterback, the Browns added another veteran signal caller in preparation for the playoffs.

One day after securing a playoff berth, the Browns have added more veteran depth to the quarterback position. With only two healthy quarterbacks on the active roster, the team decided to sign veteran backup Jeff Driskel off the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad.

Driskel has started games for four different teams in his career, beginning with the Bengals in 2018. He then played for Detroit, Denver, and Houston before being on the Cardinals practice squad this year. He has appeared in 23 games with 11 starts and has totaled 2,228 yards with 14 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

The move makes sense with the playoffs looming after rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson went on IR. The team doesn’t want to enter the playoffs with only two healthy QBs and now gets the extra rest and one final week to get Driskel up to speed in case he is needed. Hopefully, he isn’t needed and Joe Flacco continues to play elite football.

Cardinals add WR Andre Baccellia, QB Jeff Driskel, RB Corey Clement to roster

The Cardinals add QB Jeff Driskel, RB Corey Clement and WR Andre Baccellia to the active roster for the game against the Browns.

The Arizona Cardinals announced three roster additions for their game on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Two were elevated from the practice squad and a third was signed to it.

For the second week in a row, the Cardinals signed receiver Andre Baccellia to the active roster, presumably because either Greg Dortch or Michael Wilson, both questionable to play, will be unable to go.

The Cardinals used their two practice squad elevations to add running back Corey Clement and quarterback Jeff Driskel to the roster.

Clement will be the third running back and play mostly special teams while Keaontay Ingram and Tony Jones handle offensive duties.

Driskel will be the backup quarterback to Clayton Tune. Driskel will be active for the first time as a member of the Cardinals.

A signing is different than an elevation because players elevated are reverted to the practice squad on Monday. A player signed remains on the roster unless released and would then have to clear waivers to re-sign with the practice squad.

The Cardinals and Browns kick off Sunday at 11 a.m. Arizona time.

Cardinals add QB Jeff Driskel, 3 others to practice squad

Driskel might end up being the Cardinals’ backup quarterback on Sunday against the Browns.

The Arizona Cardinals opened their week of practice on Wednesday, but before they did, they made some roster moves on the practice squad. They had four vacancies and filled them all.

The most notable addition was signing quarterback Jeff Driskel back to the practice squad.

Driskel was with the team for most of the spring, all of training camp and the preseason and was on the practice squad until Kyler Murray was designated and began practicing two weeks ago.

He could end up being the backup quarterback this weekend when the Cardinals take on the Cleveland Browns.

In addition to Driskel, the Cardinals also re-signed receivers Andre Baccellia and Daniel Arias and added running back Hassan Hall.

Arias spent time earlier on the practice squad. Baccellia was signed to the active roster over the weekend and played against the Ravens.

Hall is new.

He is 5-foot-10 and 196 pounds and spent the preseason with Cleveland after entering the league with the Browns as an undrafted rookie free agent from Georgia Tech. He played one season at Georgia Tech in 2022 after playing 42 games at Louisville where he had 3,843 all-purpose yards and 13 touchdowns.

Colts worked out QB Jeff Driskel, four others

The Colts held a workout for five players, including QB Jeff Driskel.

The Indianapolis Colts held a workout for five players, according to the league’s transaction wire Monday.

Among those five players included quarterback Jeff Driskel, wide receiver John Brown, tight end Antony Auclair, defensive back Keidron Smith and wide receiver Makai Polk.

The Colts have Kellen Mond on the practice squad while Gardner Minshew and Sam Ehlinger are on the active roster so it’s interesting to see them work out Driskel, who was released from the Arizona Cardinals practice squad last week.

We’ll see if anything comes of these workouts in terms of a signing, or the Colts may just be keeping tabs on available options.

Cardinals cut QB Jeff Driskel from practice squad, add RB Tony Jones

Kyler Murray’s return made Driskel’s spot on the roster unnecessary.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a pair of roster moves on the practice squad on Friday. With quarterback Kyler Murray practicing again, having been designated to return from PUP, the team cut quarterback Jeff Driskel from the practice squad.

With Murray back on the practice field, the three who would get reps are him, Josh Dobbs and rookie Clayton Tune.

Driskel is no longer needed.

Replacing him on the practice squad is running back Tony Jones. Jones was released earlier in the week.

Jeff Driskel could be Cardinals’ 3rd QB after dust settles from roster cuts

He could be re-signed as the team’s third quarterback after the first wave of moves is over.

If the Arizona Cardinals keep three quarterbacks on their roster, it might not be the quarterback most expected.

While David Blough would be the player expected to be the team’s third quarterback, it appears that will not be the case.

According to Aaron Wilson, it probably will be Jeff Driskel.

Per Wilson’s report, Driskel is being released as part of final cuts to get to a 53-man roster, but could return this week.

What this seems to imply is that the Cardinals will have at least one player they keep on the 53-man roster for a day before placing him on injured reserve so he is eligible to return this season.

Once those moves are made, the Cardinals apparently plan on bringing Driskel back.

Driskel did not play at all in the preseason, sitting out with an injury that head coach Jonathan Gannon said was a “residual effect of practice.”

He was signed back in April.

Driskel has played fives seasons in the NFL with the Bengals, Lions, Broncos and Texans. He has played in 23 games, starting 11. He has only one win as a starter.

Cardinals announce 1-year deal for QB Jeff Driskel

Driskel will compete for the final quarterback spot this offseason.

The Arizona Cardinals announced they added quarterback Jeff Driskel to the roster, signing him to a one-year deal. This move was expected and reported.

Driskel had a tryout with the Cardinals earlier in the week.

Kyler Murray is rehabbing a torn ACL and Colt McCoy had an unknown minor offseason procedure that was expected to limit him in the offseason program, so adding another quarterback to the mix for practice reps was no surprise.

While McCoy is supposedly good to go, with the Cardinals’ first minicamp coming up in a little more than a week, teams typically need three quarterbacks to get through practices.

Driskel has bounced around in the NFL since 2016 when he was drafted in the sixth round by the San Francisco 49ers.

After getting cut before the season in 2016, he landed with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he played through 2018, although his only games played were in 2018. He started three games for the Detroit Lions in 2019, appeared in three for the Denver Broncos and then eight games (two starts) over the last two years with the Texans.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pounder has completed 59.2% of his passes in his career for 2,228 yards, 14 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

He is 1-9 in 10 career starts.
