Report: Sixers decline Jeff Dowtin Jr.‘s team option, making him a free agent

The Philadelphia 76ers will decline Jeff Dowtin Jr.’s team option for 2024-25 which will make him a free agent.

The Philadelphia 76ers are continuing to gear up for free agency beginning on Sunday evening at 6 p.m. EDT. The Sixers have a ton of cap space and are expected to pursue Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George aggressively.

As the Sixers continue to prepare for the free agency frenzy, they made a little move in terms of the roster. Jeff Dowtin Jr., who was signed to a deal during the season, will have his team option declined for 2024-25 paving the way for him to enter free agency.

In 12 games with the Sixers, Dowtin averaged 4.3 points and 2.3 assists while shooting 47.4% from deep. He had an understanding of how to run coach Nick Nurse’s system from their days in Toronto together.

The Sixers will now look to use their cap space wisely. This is a big opportunity they have in front of them to add a third star to Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

Sixers announce conversion of Jeff Dowtin Jr. to standard deal

The Philadelphia 76ers announce they will convert two-way guard Jeff Dowtin Jr. to a standard NBA deal.

The Philadelphia 76ers made a move following their 109-105 win over the Miami Heat on Thursday that rewarded Jeff Dowtin Jr. for his solid play.

The Sixers signed Dowtin to a two-way deal earlier in the season when they were looking for ball-handling while the team was short-handed. The third-year guard out of Rhode Island is averaging 4.4 points, 2.4 assists, and 1.6 rebounds while shooting 7-for-14 from deep in seven games for the Sixers.

Philadelphia converted Dowtin to a standard contract. He has experience playing for coach Nick Nurse both with the Toronto Raptors and the Sixers. He has had some good moments in Philadelphia and it makes sense to keep him at this point.

With five games left, it will be interesting to see how the Sixers handle Dowtin and what kind of role he will play. He has made enough of a statement to earn a standard deal. Now it’s time for him to make a case for a future rotation spot.

Jeff Dowtin Jr. learning on the fly to help short-handed Sixers

Jeff Dowtin Jr. is learning his new teammates on the fly as he looks to help the Philadelphia 76ers on the floor.

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers have been short-handed for quite some time now with the absence of Joel Embiid, but things were a bit magnified when they took on the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday.

The Sixers played the contest missing lead guard Tyrese Maxey to a concussion while Kyle Lowry was out to rest on the second night of a back-to-back.

Philadelphia started Cam Payne and they relied on recently signed Jeff Dowtin Jr. to step in and be the backup point guard. Philadelphia signed Dowtin to a two-way deal on March 2 to provide some ball-handling and he had 10 points and six assists in the loss to the Grizzlies as he made a positive impact.

“At the end of the day, it’s just basketball,” said Dowtin. “Just thrown into a situation that I know how to play. I’ve had great teammates that have helped me throughout this whole process. So I appreciate them. The coaches have just been guiding me and teaching me things as I go along. So I’m just learning everything on the fly and just trying to make the most of it.”

While Dowtin is learning his new teammates on the fly and learning their tendencies of what they can do, it helps him that he has a familiarity with coach Nick Nurse. He played 25 games for the Toronto Raptors in the 2022-23 season so he knows what Nurse likes to run so that accelerates the process a bit.

“Yeah, it definitely helps a lot,” Dowtin added. “Just being able to understand the terminology that he uses. The different sets. The different schemes. How we orchestrate a lot of offense and defensive things so it definitely helps a lot.”

While Lowry will return when the Sixers take on the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday, the status of Maxey remains up in the air. One has to figure that Dowtin will continue to get a look whenever Nurse sees fit.

The Sixers plan to sign Jeff Dowtin Jr. to a two-way deal. He played 25 games for the Raptors in the 2022-23 season averaging 2.4 points and 1.2 assists. One should expect Dowtin to stay in the G League, but the Sixers will likely give him a look at some point before the playoffs.

The Sixers have 24 games left in the season and take on the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday to begin a two-game road trip.

A youthful Celtics group falls to Magic on last-second drama in penultimate preseason game

The Celtics fall to the Magic on a last-second jumper by Jeff Dowtin Jr. as Aaron Nesmith impresses

On Wednesday night in Orlando, the Celtics trotted out a starting lineup that you won’t see throughout the regular season. In their second to last preseason game, Ime Udoka and crew gave the keys to the youth as Boston rested most of their veterans.

Orlando’s youngsters outlasted Boston’s down the stretch, as a Jeff Dowtin Jr. jumper with less than a second left gave the Magic a 103-102 win.

The early Celtics offense ran through Payton Pritchard, who cruised to 10 first-half points. Late in the second quarter, Pritchard was inadvertently hit in the nose by Ignas Brazdeikis and eventually ruled out for the remainder of the night.

After starring in NBA Summer League, Aaron Nesmith led the way again for Boston offensively. The Vanderbilt product finished with 23 points on 8-for-16 shooting while pouring in four threes. Led by Nesmith, Pritchard, and early Jabari Parker scoring, the Celtics jumped out to a 56-54 halftime lead.

Boston built a nine-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but the end of the night belonged to the Magic youth. Second-year pro Dowtin Jr. finished off the Celtics with the moment of his young NBA career:

R.J. Hampton led the Magic off the bench, finishing with a team-high 20 points on 6-for-10 shooting. Dowtin Jr. added 10, while Wendell Carter Jr. poured in 13 points for Orlando.

The Celtics dropped to 2-1 in preseason, and face Miami on Friday in their final test before the regular season begins.
