Jean Segura responds to ump’s terrible strike call by marking it in the dirt, gets tossed

He was right!

You know the drill: You can’t argue balls and strikes (well, at least for now. Someday you might be arguing with robot umpires!) or you’ll probably get tossed.

That’s what happened to Jean Segura. The Miami Marlins infielder got a third strike called on him against the St. Louis Cardinals’ Chris Stratton. The ball was very much low and outside, so Segura had a good eye.

But Jeff Nelson called it a strike and Segura made sure to mark where the pitch was in the dirt. Boom, immediate ejection, that’s it for him. But it was definitely a ball, so he had a point.

Jean Segura answered fan’s question about his favorite ice cream flavor in the middle of an at-bat

Vanilla!

The absence of crowds at games last season robbed baseball fans of a year of interactions between players and fans. It’s part of the atmosphere, and it leads to some great moments.

Just last week, the Reds’ Jesse Winker turned a Mets fan’s rude sign into an opportunity to make a new fan. And on Monday, we saw another fantastic fan-player interaction play out in the middle of an at-bat.

As Phillies infielder Jean Segura was at the plate in the ninth inning with runners on first and second in Monday’s game against the Nationals, a young fan shouted from the stands to ask Segura what was his favorite ice cream flavor.

Segura could be seen shouting back his answer and smiling while in the box.

“Vanilla,” Segura answered back.

And two pitches later, Segura would tie the game with an RBI double. The Phillies would go on to win, 7-5, after the five-run ninth inning.

Let’s hope Segura celebrated with some ice cream. He deserved it.

Joe Girardi got super frustrated with reporters over questions about a dugout confrontation

We all saw it, Joe.

The Philadelphia Phillies dropped their second straight game on Sunday to the Toronto Blue Jays, and it was an especially rough defensive effort for second baseman Jean Segura.

Segura committed a pair of errors in the game with the second error (a would-be, inning-ending double play) leading to an unearned run.

Following the defensive blunder, cameras caught the end of a heated conversation between Segura and manager Joe Girardi. At one point, third base coach Dusty Wathan had to step in and try to talk down a heated Segura.

Given that this was a visible argument between a player and manager, it was more than fair for the Phillies media to ask Girardi about what happened. The problem? Girardi refused to discuss the incident and grew more frustrated as reporters continued to ask him about it.

And sure, Girardi was upset with the loss, but by refusing to answer the reasonable questions from reporters, he also didn’t do Segura any favors in the process. That was an opportunity to defend his player and dismiss the conversation as emotions running high. Instead, he let the video of the argument stand without any context or explanation.

Even if Girardi wants to keep those conversations in house, it kind of defeats the purpose when it happens out in the open.

Just a rough look all the way around for the Phillies manager.
