Kevin Washington was watching a player he’s coached, trained and mentored.

At this point, Mauldin (S.C.) High School five-star Jeadyn Lukus has blossomed into a dominant, young cornerback. He’s already committed to Clemson and is one of the top cornerbacks in the 2022 recruiting class.

But we’ll get to that in a moment.

Washington received a phone call from Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed.

It was in the middle of Mauldin’s 14-9 win over Spartanburg on Friday, Aug. 27. Reed wanted to check-in, to see how his young cornerback was faring in the debut game of his senior campaign. What other Division I coaches are doing that?

“How cool is that? He called in the middle of his game to check and see how he was doing,” Washington told The Clemson Insider. “That’s pretty cool. In the first game of the season, he’s calling. Asking about him.”

What type of player is Clemson getting in Lukus?

“Clemson is getting a great person, first and foremost,” Washington said. “Sonya and Mike Lukus have done a great job raising this young man. He’s just a good person. High grades. Yes sir, no sir kid. Obviously, extreme athletic ability. Just a good person. Just a really, really good guy.”

Washington had more knowledge about Lukus’s recruitment than most. Obviously, he has a close relationship with the Clemson commit, but Lukus kept his recruitment pretty close to vest.

“I think we all know this by now. He doesn’t say a whole lot,” Washington said. “He’s a very, very closed end. But once you get to know him, he’s such a great kid. He likes to have fun. He likes to laugh. He likes to play. He likes to crack jokes. He just has a reserved personality.”

At the end of the day, he’s just someone who lets his play do all the talking.

When it came to his recruitment, Washington indicated that Lukus kept his options wide open for the most part.

“He was just trying to enjoy the whole recruiting process and just take everything one day at a time,” Washington said. “I think when we went to the [Elite Retreat], Clemson just kind of sealed the deal. Great environment. Dabo is awesome. Coach Reed, Coach Venables as well, the whole staff. The environment man, it’s pretty great.”

When Lukus gave his verbal pledge to the Tigers back on July 28. He committed to Clemson over programs like Ohio State and North Carolina.

“Coach Reed, he sold it,” Washington said. “Obviously, we all talked about it. It’s the best fit for him. Jeadyn’s going to excel. It’s gonna be kind of exciting to go 40 minutes down the street to watch him play, as opposed to driving a couple of hours to watch him play, if he decided to go elsewhere.”

How does Washington see Lukus fitting in with what Clemson does defensively?

He views it as the perfect marriage. Point Blank.

“Coach Venables, he’s very, very aggressive,” Washington said. “We’ve spoken a couple of different times and I just picked his brain, had a couple of questions, just seeing how aggressive he is defensively. It’s very, very similar to a Mauldin Mavericks defense, where we lock up and we blitz and we just get after the quarterback.”

“I just think he’s gonna be a huge asset for the Clemson Tigers,” he added.

While Clemson is confident in its current cornerbacks, there’s not a whole lot of depth in Reed’s room. With that being said, the Tigers have received verbal commitments from three cornerbacks in the 2022 class — Lukus, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy 4-star Daylen Everette and East St. Louis (IL.) High School 4-star Toriano Pride. Additionally, the Tigers received verbal pledges from Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith 4-star safety Sherrod Covil and IMG Academy 4-star ATH Keon Sabb.

“As you can see, they’ve done an incredible job with some of the defensive backs they got coming into the school,” Washington added. “Some of those tremendous athletes are going to be able to push him, day in and day out in practice. I just feel like that’s just gonna really make him up his game. Which will be very, very exciting to see.”

Lukus will have a chance to get on the field early. Washington agrees, but he also doesn’t want to come off as biased. Though, there are few, if any people, who know Lukus better.

“I just feel like he can start right away. I really do,” he said. “He’s smart. He’ll be able to catch on to the scheme. He’s a very hard worker. He wants the challenge. He wants to be challenged. I just feel like the bigger the moment, the more pressure. He’s going to get pushed every day during practice. “

Washington feels that Lukus (6-2.5, 185) is the “total package,” that can shut down the opposing team’s No. 1 receiver.

“He’s a lockdown corner,” he said. “His technique is incredible. He’s able to get down low. He has great pad level. He’s extremely strong and has great leaping ability. The most important part is that he can run. I mean he can flat out fly. He’s the total package.”

While Washington is no longer coaching at Mauldin High School, he’s still making sure he’s present for Lukus’s games. Hence why Reed phoned him during Mauldin’s first game of the season.

“Coach Reed, that’s my guy,” Washington said. “We’re real, real cool. Coach Reed did a phenomenal job with his recruiting process and he’s been with [Jeadyn] the whole time. I’m a fan of Coach Reed. He’s always contacting me, asking me questions, how he can be available. Coach Reed has done a tremendous job in influencing Jeadyn to come to Clemson.”

Washington was back in the stands during Mauldin’s 24-21 loss to Greenville on Friday, Sept. 3.

He told TCI that Lukus had an interception, a “couple huge tackles,” and four receptions with 25 receiving yards.

Washington also shared this clip below with TCI of Lukus’s interception.

As far as Washington is concerned, Lukus will be in the stands with his father for Clemson’s marquee season-opening matchup against Georgia at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte (NC.) on Saturday night.

Clemson landed a huge commitment on Wednesday from one of the country’s top prospects in the 2022 class.

Mauldin (S.C.) five-star cornerback Jeadyn Lukus (pictured above center) announced his commitment to the Tigers via social media Wednesday afternoon.

Lukus (6-2, 185) is rated as a five-star prospect by the 247Sports Composite, which considers him the No. 1 prospect in the Palmetto State, No. 6 cornerback nationally and No. 32 overall prospect for the 2022 class regardless of position.

Clemson beat out North Carolina and many other schools to land Lukus, who also had offers from Ohio State, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Penn State among others.

Lukus grew up a Clemson fan and has been on campus numerous times in the past. He is coming off a visit to Tiger Town for the All In Cookout last Sunday and also attended the Elite Retreat last month, as well as the Orange & White spring game in April.

The Tigers gave Lukus their very first 2022 offer when they began dispensing offers to prospects in the class in June 2020.

Lukus becomes the third cornerback pledge in Clemson’s 2022 class, joining St. Louis (Mo.) Lutheran North four-star Toriano Pride and Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy four-star Daylen Everette.

Clemson now has 11 scholarship commits in the class, with Lukus joining Pride, Everette, IMG Academy safety Keon Sabb, IMG Academy defensive end Jihaad Campbell, Austin (Texas) Westlake quarterback Cade Klubnik, Myrtle Beach (S.C.) wide receiver Adam Randall, Greenville (S.C.) offensive lineman Collin Sadler, Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith safety Sherrod Covil, Strongsville (Ohio) offensive lineman Blake Miller and Largo (Fla.) Pinellas Park kicker Robert Gunn.

With the addition of Lukus, Clemson’s 2022 class now ranks No. 10 nationally according to the 247Sports Composite team rankings.

There continues to be plenty of buzz surrounding Clemson’s 2022 recruiting class. Sunday marked the beginning of the quiet period, which allowed for Clemson to kick off its All In Cookout.

Most of Clemson’s Class of 2022 verbal commits and several priority targets were on campus for Sunday’s festivities, with most of them being invited to Dabo Swinney’s house afterward.

In this edition of What They Are Saying, we take a look at what is being said on Twitter and Instagram about The Cookout:

We wanted to pass along some of what we’ve gathered regarding Clemson’s All In Cookout, which took place this morning and afternoon. Today marked the start of the NCAA quiet period that permits coaches to have in-person contact with recruits on college campuses.

Most of Clemson’s commitments, with the exception of the IMG Academy trio, were on hand for the cookout as well as several priority targets. TCI confirmed that one of the headliners that ended up making the trip back to Tiger Town was Greensboro (N.C.) Grimsley five-star defensive tackle Travis Shaw, who also attended the Tigers’ Elite Retreat in June.

Shaw was joined on campus by Mauldin (S.C.) five-star cornerback Jeadyn Lukus, Cumming (Ga.) West Forsyth four-star tight end Oscar Delp and Richmond (Va.) St. Christopher’s School four-star wide receiver Andre Greene Jr., as well as Greenville (S.C.) tight end Josh Sapp, the son of former Clemson and NFL linebacker Patrick Sapp.

Aside from a great meal, the cookout itinerary included trivia games about music and games at the Allen N. Reeves Football Complex, including dodgeball and a wiffleball home run derby. After that, the recruits went to Death Valley and did a photoshoot there.

Based on the returns we’ve gathered, the cookout went very well. It allowed the commits, targets, coaching staff and families to build stronger bonds, and from what we’ve heard, everyone enjoyed their experience and had a great time as you would expect. And once again, the Tigers were able to roll out ace recruiter Kathleen Swinney, who is always a hit with the recruits and families. One prospect told us the cookout felt like a “family reunion.”

Like Shaw, Lukus was on campus for last month’s Elite Retreat, and his cookout attendance figures to only help Clemson’s case with him heading into his commitment announcement this Wednesday. Delp, Greene and Sapp all visited during the Dabo Swinney Camp in June, and getting them back on campus for the second time in two months certainly doesn’t hurt Clemson’s chances. They were able to feel Clemson’s family atmosphere in full force, and the cookout experience gave them a lot to think about.

We’ll have more on the cookout in The Insider Report on Monday.

Notre Dame Football: Irish offer 5-Star corner Lukus

The Irish go out to South Carolina and offer elite cornerback Jeadyn Lukus.

Brian Kelly and his coaching staff have turned their attention to the 2022 recruiting class and are making a concerned effort to recruit some of the best prospects in the nation that fit the Notre Dame profile. Well, they found a good one in South Carolina’s cornerback Jeadyn Lukus who was offered yesterday.

Lukus has the prototypical modern corner frame at 6-foot-1-inch and 175-pounds and uses his elite frame to lock down opposing wide receivers. It’s not just Lukus’ coverage skills that stand out, he has a willingness to come up and make the big hit. Lukus’ is the compete package as an cornerback. You can watch Lukas’ highlights here.

It should come to no one’s surprise that Lukus’ is a nationally recruited prospect, as Notre Dame joined schools like Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Ohio State. He is currently ranked as the 30th player nationally and the 6th corner in the country by the 247Sports composite rankings.

Recently committed linebacker Will Schweitzer has already put on his recruiting hat. Schweitzer just flipped his commitment to the Irish from Nebraska on August 16th, but already is using twitter to recruit for the Irish’s advantage.

This is the 12th offer to a true cornerback in the 2022 class. The Irish have just one commit on the defensive side of the ball, Nolan Ziegler a safety, who just committed over the weekend. The Irish have three total commits in the ‘22 class at the moment, ranking the 4th nationally, although it is very early in this cycle.
