Utah was demolished last night by the Brooklyn Nets in a game that was pretty much over following a Nets’ 35-14 first quarter. Color me surprised, but the Jazz built a brick house hitting just 38.8% of their shots and got gassed in transition (Brooklyn was 20-4 in fast-break points).
The Knicks are an NBA feel-good story through the first two weeks and just went 3-1 in a four-game road trip with all three wins coming against above-.500 opponents. New York fought back from down 15 to beat the Atlanta Hawks 113-108 as 7-point underdogs Monday, thanks to awesome games from PF Julius Randle and SG R.J. Barrett.

It’s hard to roll with the sharps who are betting the Jazz (-350) because I feel it’s too numbers-based and not enough eye-ball test. New York appears eager to round the corner with first-year head coach Tom Thibodeau and Utah seems to be in an early-season fog.
There’s no question who’s the more talented team but Thibodeau is getting more from the Knicks than head coach Quin Snyder is with the Jazz. If the Knicks had the benefit of a normal MSG home crowd, I’d like them a lot more in this spot but I’ll lean KNICKS (+260) for a quarter-unit since I think they’ll keep this game close. (The score is an honest projection).
Against the spread (ATS)
The Jazz have been good for years and the Knicks have been terrible, yet New York is 12-3 ATS in its last 15 home games vs. Utah. More simply, if I think New York will keep it close then I have to TAKE KNICKS +7.5 (-110) for 1.5 units.
Over/Under (O/U)
PASS ON THE TOTAL. Each team is at the bottom of the NBA in both points off of turnovers and opponent’s points off of turnovers. That’s a major reason why Jazz-Knicks have a combined 5-9 O/U record to start the season.
These head-to-head matchups are always projected to be low-scoring and eight of the last nine Jazz-Knicks games played to the Under.
