Report: Jayson Tatum to play against Warriors on minutes restriction

Celtics forward Jayson Tatum will be back on the floor Thursday night against the Warriors

An All-Star hopeful, Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum will be back in action on Thursday.

According to Boston.com, Celtics coach Brad Stevens said Tatum will play against the Golden State Warriors, though he will be on a minutes restriction. Tatum has missed the past three games because of a groin injury he suffered against the Memphis Grizzlies on Jan. 22.

The Celtics and Warriors will tip off in Boston at 8 p.m. EST.

This game will be Tatum’s first since the passing of Kobe Bryant, a mentor and friend who he looked up to. Tatum talked about what Bryant meant to him in the video shown below.

A third-year player out of Duke, Tatum is having his best season to date. He’s averaging a career-high 21.5 points per game and shooting 36.6% from the 3-point line.

As one of the Celtics’ top players, Tatum is the team’s second-leading scorer behind Kemba Walker. Tatum also ranks fifth in 3-point percentage.

With the All-Star game around the corner, the game’s reserves for both conferences will be announced Thursday on TNT before the night’s games. Tatum has a chance to be a first-time All-Star, and he’s deserving of a spot because of his breakout year.

Three Warriors-Celtics questions with Celtics Wire’s Justin Quinn

Justin Quinn of the USA Today’s Celtics Wire stops by Warriors Wire to help preview Golden State’s game against the Boston Celtics.

On November 19, 2019, the Warriors dropped a close game to the Boston Celtics, 105-100, since then, a lot has changed in Golde State. The Warriors frontcourt has changed with Willie Cauley-Stein leaving, and both, Marquese Chriss and Omari Spellman have arrived.

Another factor that will be different in round two against Boston is the return of D’Angelo Russell. The 23-year-old All-Star injured his thumb against the Celtics, causing him to miss a handful of games.

To help preview the Warriors’ second game of a five-game east coast road trip, Warriors Wire caught up with neighboring site, Celtics Wire editor, Justin Quinn.

Warriors Wire asked Quinn three questions before the Warriors tipped off in Boston on Thursday night:

1) What’s changed since they last met?

The Boston Celtics were on game 10 of a 10-game winning streak when they last played the Golden State Warriors and had just started to believe the hype they generated for performing above most analyst and fan expectations. That might have been part of the problems that caused Boston to drop three of their next five games (injuries started to pile up as well). However, by then, they’d cemented their status as a fringe contender in a year most assumed they’d take a step back after the summer’s exodus of talent.

Since then, injuries have been a much bigger problem than the supposedly faulted frontcourt rotation, with head coach Brad Stevens’ wing-heavy style of play proving you don’t actually need a big, bruising post presence to compete at the highest levels save for a handful of teams.

Ironically, the Celtics cribbed this approach from the team they’ll face Thursday, the Warriors having blazed the trail of the modern iteration of small ball. That they’ll likely be as favored as ever against the former behemoth brought low by injuries is only compounded by the fact that the Dubs have traded away one of their most talented healthy players in center Willie Caulie-Stein.

2) What it will take for each team to win?

Looking at the records of the two franchises squaring off at TD Garden Jan. 29, it’d be far too easy to write off the Dubs in their diminished state. But the Celtics have a tendency to “feel out” games they have no business losing, seeing which among their starters has a wet shot on a particular night.

In a way, it’s an understandable reaction to the dashed hopes of the previous season, at least some of which was driven by too many hungry mouths and the agendas — and looming free agencies — stimulating those appetites.

So, the tendency to defer to the hot hand might be praiseworthy if not for the growing number of slow starts resulting in avoidable losses, but Boston will need to get out of their own way more than anything else to secure the win.

Conversely, if Golden State can punch the Celtics in the mouth hard and early while keeping their energy up and fundamentals crisp, they have a real shot at the upset. Third-year swingman Jayson Tatum is questionable with a strained groin, and with reserve centers, Enes Kanter and Robert Williams III out, the Dubs’ frontcourt may not be at as significant a disadvantage as they might otherwise be.

3) Is there anything else we should know about the matchup, or the Celtics?

When the two teams last met, it was without veteran forward Gordon Hayward, who broke his hand after colliding with big man LaMarcus Aldridge three games prior in a win over the San Antonio Spurs, and the wheels were just starting to come off of Boston’s red-hot start. Hayward was — and has become again — a confident slasher able to attack the cup or hit an open jumper when his teammates’ gravity gives opponents Sophie’s choice driving the Celtics’ success.

If Tatum is unable to play — and the Warrior’s record may encourage Boston to rest him again given the high recurrence rate of strained groins — at least some of that dynamic may be neutralized. But should the Duke product be cleared to play, with Hayward averaging over 20 points a game over the last several contests, it could also be something of a nightmarish proposition for a Golden State team on the road.

Walker, Tatum on The Ringer’s Dan Devine’s All-Star list; Brown among ‘toughest cuts’

Kemba Walker has been voted an NBA All-Star. Will Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown (or neither, or both) join him?

Will the Boston Celtics have multiple All-Star representatives this season?

Dan Devine of The Ringer, a media member who voted for starters, believes the Celtics have two such deserving players.

He voted for guard Kemba Walker as a starter and wrote that forward Jayson Tatum deserves to be a reserve. Devine went back and forth between Tatum and Brown and ultimately decided on the 21-year-old.

Devine had Walker as a no-brainer starter:

“If you require explanations for Giannis (Antetokounmpo), LeBron (James), Luka (Doncic), (James) Harden, AD (Anthony Davis), or Kemba, stop reading this, go to the emergency room immediately, and please have a doctor check out that head wound.”

Walker has averaged 22.3 points, five assists and four rebounds per game while shooting above 38% on almost nine 3-pointers per game. His net rating of 8.1 and true shooting percentage of 58.8 are the best of his career.

Walker has helped revitalize the Celtics, who enter Wednesday with a 31-15 record and in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, just 1.5 games out of second.

Devine voted Walker and Philadelphia 76ers’ Ben Simmons as starters at the guard positions. Walker and Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young were announced as starters by the league.

Reserves will be announced Thursday, and Devine believes coaches should vote Tatum in as a wild card spot, slightly ahead of Brown.

“They’ve been one of the best wing tandems in the league this season. Their statistical cases are remarkably similar, with Brown boasting better shooting numbers, especially inside the arc, and Tatum shouldering a larger offensive load, especially in reserve-heavy lineups without Walker.”

That offensive load Tatum carries, particularly when Walker sits, got him the edge over Brown.

Tatum’s net rating of 11.1 is the highest on the team among players who have appeared in more than 12 games. It’s almost twice as high as Brown’s at 6.0.

Even with poorer shooting numbers, Devine sees Tatum as a better scorer. He also likes Tatum more as a passer and playmaker, and on defense has improved — his defensive rating of 101.8 well eclipses Brown’s, which is 106.5.

Devine also notes that Tatum has the fifth-best real plus-minus in the league.

This stat can be misleading on its own — No. 6 is Oklahoma City Thunder guard Dennis Schroder and No. 7 is Milwaukee Bucks guard Donte DiVincenzo, both of whom are fine players not stars by any means — but when used as just a piece of the equation, it can be useful. The four players with better real plus-minuses than Tatum are starters in the All-Star game.

Entering Wednesday, Tatum and Brown’s raw numbers were extremely close: Tatum had the marginal edge in points (21.5 to 20.1), rebounds (6.9 to 6.6) and assists (2.9 to 2.4) in almost the exact same number of minutes per game (34 to 33.7).

Tatum’s usage rate of 26.9 is slightly higher than Brown’s of 24.1.

But Brown’s percentages are noticeably better. He’s shooting 55.5% from inside the arc, 39% from out and has a true shooting percentage of 59.9.

Tatum is shooting 47.4% from inside, 36.6% from out and has a true shooting percentage of 54.1.

Devine thinks Tatum should be in the game. He listed Brown as one of the “toughest cuts.” Now, it’s up to the coaches.

But whether neither, one or both of the young players make it, Tatum and Brown have put together strong seasons and continue to give Celtics fans a future to be excited about.

Prediction

Celtics 108, Heat 103

Moneyline (ML)

Circumstances dictate backing the CELTICS (-106)  Tuesday night against the Heat (-115). On one hand, Miami is tied with the Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers at 20-2 with the best home win/loss record in the NBA. On the other hand, Boston is 11-0 with a rest advantage with a plus-15.6 margin of victory and Miami is 3-5 on the second game of back-to-backs with a minus-9.8 point differential. Boston has won four straight games against Miami, including a 112-93 trouncing in their first meeting of the season.

They cancel each other out offensively—Miami averages 112.2 points per game and Boston averages 112.3 PPG—but the Celtics have the edge defensively, where they are ranked third in opponent PPG and fifth in defensive rating versus a Heat squad ranked 12th and 13th, respectively, in those same categories.

New to sports betting? Bet $106 on the Celtics to earn a profit of $100 if they win outright.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Ehhh … let’s PASS on an against the spread wager. With two top-10 offensively rated basketball teams squaring off, there’s no point in taking Celtics +1.5 (-121). If the Heat win by one, my bad.

Over/Under (O/U)

I LEAN UNDER 218.5 (-106) for various reasons. Both teams play with a below-average tempo: Boston is ranked 17th in Pace and Miami is 26th. The Celtics have an Over/Under record of 4-7 when playing with a rest advantage and the O/U is 4-4 in Heat games when the playing on no rest.

Also, when you combine BetMGM‘s projection of this being a close game, the Celtics’ elite defense and the Heat’s assumed fatigue in this spot, a tightly contested, slow-paced game that plays to the Under is the most likely outcome.

WATCH: Jayson Tatum relates what Kobe Bryant meant to him

Idol, mentor, friend: this is what Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum lost on Sunday with the unexpected passing of Los Angeles Lakers luminary Kobe Bryant.

The loss of Kobe Bryant on Sunday was a devastating blow for the wider NBA community, but for those who called him a friend, it was especially difficult.

Such was the case for Boston Celtics swingman Jayson Tatum, who grew up idolizing Kobe, but later became his friend and mentee.

In a recent interview with several local sports outlets, the Duke product opened up on the loss of his friend and how it has affected him and those around him.

Even a few days removed from the tragic events that took the life of the Los Angeles Lakers legend, it’s still clearly tough for Tatum to speak on the topic, and for good reason.

It’s never easy to lose friends and loved ones, and harder still to lose them in an accident. To lose one’s idol at the same time is simply incomprehensible.

Jayson Tatum shares tribute to fallen idol Kobe Bryant

Boston Celtics swingman Jayson Tatum shared a touching tribute to his friend, mentor and idol Kobe Bryant, who died unexpectedly in a helicopter accident Sunday.

Idolizing Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant from his childhood, Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum was devastated by the news of his now-mentor and friend’s passing.

The Duke product posted a tribute to Bryant, who in recent years became close to his one-time fan as the Missouri native began to spread his wings in the NBA.

Tatum penned a heartfelt note on Instagram along with a photo of the pair from when the former Blue Devil was still a boy, saying:

“My Idol. The reason I started to play this game, the reason I fell in love with this game. Growing up wanting to be just like you, to you becoming a mentor, beyond thankful for everything you’ve done for me. “I didn’t have a plan B I put all my eggs in one basket and I knew I was going to make it happen” hearing you say that stuck with me everyday of my life. You inspired me and I am forever grateful more than you know! Love you Bean 🙏🏽❤️! Sad, sad, sad day RIP Kobe and Gianna! Praying for the family!”

Bryant died in a fiery helicopter crash outside of Los Angeles as he was reportedly shuttling his daughter Gianna — who Tatum referenced in his note — to basketball practice.

There were no survivors of the crash which has sent the wider NBA community into mourning, as countless others were touched by his life, and are now picking up the pieces after his untimely death.

Jayson Tatum OUT vs. Pels; Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart available

Boston Celtics All-Star hopeful Jayson Tatum will sit against the New Orleans Pelicans Sunday while teammates Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart will be available.

The Boston Celtics ruled out third-year forward Jayson Tatum ahead of Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Both teams decided to close their locker rooms after word of Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant’s untimely demise spread, which is undoubtedly affecting several players who were close to the star, particularly Tatum.

The Duke product has been recuperating from a groin injury sustained against the Memphis Grizzlies on Jan. 22, and the team is playing it safe with the high-recurrence injury.

The All-Star hopeful has been having an outstanding season to date, averaging 21.5 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.

Guards Marcus Smart and Jaylen Brown are available to play, the latter having a sprained left hand and the former a sprained right ankle.

Their presence should help the banged-up Celtics considerably as they try for their fourth consecutive win against the Pelicans in the two clubs’ first meeting since highly-anticipated rookie Zion Williamson’s debut.

Prediction

Pelicans 118, Celtics 114

Moneyline (ML)

The Pelicans have suffered from inaccurate pricing because of Zion Williamson‘s debut with New Orleans losing both of his games outright and against the spread. And Boston has played really well of late, winning straight up and covering in its previous three games. But New Orleans is finally getting points and is the far healthier team: Zion has arrived and Boston has Brown, Tatum and Smart dinged up — whether they play is still up in the air but them being 100% is out of the question. This should allow Brandon Ingram and Zion to drive to the basket and space the court for JJ Redick (.465 3-point %) and E’Twaun Moore (.394 3-point %) to get some good looks.

BET PELICANS (pick ’em) to win outright. New to sports betting? Bet $75 to earn a $75 profit if the Pelicans win.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Truth be told you can find team-friendly trends for either team in this game but the Pelicans’ stuff pops out more. New Orleans is 9-1-1 against the spread in its last 11 games as an underdog and it generally steps up when rested two or more days: the Pelicans are 6-2 ATS in those spots. Also, the Pelicans are 8-4 ATS at home against above-.500 teams. More about that, New Orleans has played the toughest schedule in the NBA thus far while the Celtics have played the 28th-ranked schedule.

TAKE PELICANS +2.5 (-125) as insurance for our moneyline bet above. New to sports betting? Bet $125 on Pelicans to win outright or to lose by no more than 2 points to earn $100.

Over/Under (O/U)

lean toward the Over 230.5 (-115) because the Over is 12-2 in Pelicans’ last 14 overall and the combined over/under record of the two teams is 46-44. But ultimately I will PASS THE TOTAL since the Under is 4-1 in Celtics’ last five games as a road favorite and they are allowing just 99 points per game on Sundays.

WATCH: The shot that lifts Jayson Tatum to All-Star level

Third-year swingman Jayson Tatum has continually added to his game each season, and the newest weapon in his arsenal might just be the deadliest.

Third-year swingman Jayson Tatum has reached borderline All-Star status whether he gets the nod or not this season.

But for him to even be in the conversation so early in his career is a blessing, and we can attribute a lot of the growth that made it possible to one specific development the Duke product has added to his game.

The shot, the step-back 3-pointer, has made the Missouri native a potent offensive threat, and his increased gravity has only made more room for his talented teammates to operate in.

Watch the video above assembled by popular Celtics video producer Tomasz Kordelewski as he highlights Tatum’s path from promising prospect to serious 2020 NBA All-Star Game hopeful.

Boston Celtics have a new face among league’s top-five jersey sales

The Boston Celtics have a strong showing among the NBA’s top-selling jerseys and other merchandise, supplying a new addition to the NBA’s five most popular jerseys.

The NBA recently announced their top-selling jerseys at the halfway point of the 2019-20 season, and a new Boston Celtic has cracked the top five for the first time of his young career.

Third-year swingman Jayson Tatum’s jersey is the league’s fourth-best selling jersey, putting the Duke product in some rarified air.

He trails LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers, Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, and Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, who have the three top-selling jerseys of the league in that order.

He is ahead of the Houston Rockets’ James Harden, the Dallas Mavericks’ Luka Doncic and the Los Angeles Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard, and well ahead of teammate Kemba Walker, whose jersey is the league’s 14th most popular in terms of sales.

https://twitter.com/AlexKennedyNBA

Boston merchandise in general is the second-most popular across the league, with only longtime rival Los Angeles Lakers outpacing their rate of team-affiliated merchandise.

They are followed by the Philadelphia 76ers and Toronto Raptors for the third and fourth-most popular franchise in terms of merchandise sales, the latter of which cracks the top five for the first time in franchise history.

Boston’s strong showing in NBA merchandise and jersey sales reflects their success this season — recent losses excluded — and with Tatum and teammate Jaylen Brown’s ascent into their prime, it’s not out of the question for the team to have an even stronger showing next season.
