Where did Devon Achane, Antonio Johnson, and Jaylon Jones land in Dane Brugler’s latest 2023 NFL Mock Draft?

The Athletic’s Dane Brugler maps out all seven rounds and 259 picks as he forecasts where Texas A&M’s three prospects will land in the 2023 NFL Draft.

With less than two weeks from the 2023 NFL Draft, Texas A&M has a trio of prospects eagerly awaiting to make the jump from College Station to the pros. Until we officially hear their names called come April 27, a plethora of mock drafts will have to do for now.

In his latest mock, The Athletic’s Dane Brugler mapped out all seven rounds and corresponding 259 picks with the exception of including trades. A swap here or there of course could swing where a few Aggies land, but Brugler’s latest prediction provides some keen guidance nonetheless.

Brugler has running back Devon Achane off the board first (Pick No. 67, Denver Broncos) followed by safety Antonio Johnson (Pick No. 78, Green Bay Packers). Rounding out the trio is cornerback Jaylon Jones (Pick No. 185, Jacksonville Jaguars).

That makes two Aggies hearing their names called in the third round, while Jones comes off the board in the sixth round.

Brugler’s latest mock mirrors NFL.com’s Chad Reuter’s in that they both foresee Achane heading to the Mile High City. The fit makes sense after the Broncos ranked 21st in rushing last year (113.8 YPG) and only a slightly better 17th in rushing yards per attempt (4.4). Achane’s speed would bolster a backfield that is awaiting the return of Javonte Williams from injury (knee) while complementing the veteran addition of Samaje Perine.

Green Bay’s drafting of Johnson could help address the void left by Micah Hyde ever since his departure following the 2016 season. The Packers allowed an average of 10.7 yards per completion in 2022 (25th) and while Johnson thrives in more of a box safety role, he’s more than capable of staying in stride versus receivers with moderate speed.

The Jaguars ranked 19th in yards per completion allowed (10.4) and 27th in passing yards per game allowed (238.2), so their backend unit will take any addition of depth they can spare. Jones, at 6’2″ and 200 lbs, would give their secondary an immediate boost of physicality and size, but he’ll need to refine his footwork and technique as he looks to carve out a role in the rotation.

Bears 2023 NFL draft preview: Where does Chicago stand at CB?

Up next in our Bears draft preview is cornerback, which features a pair of solid young players but could still be improved.

The Chicago Bears have had a busy offseason, working to improve the team following their historic 3-14 run during the 2022 season during general manager Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus’ first year with the team. Now going into Year 2, Poles and Eberflus are working to get the Bears back to relevancy and build a foundation that will eventually lead to postseason success.

Following their free agency frenzy, the Bears are setting their sights towards the 2023 NFL draft, which is quickly approaching. After initially winding up with the No. 1 overall pick, the Bears moved down to No. 9 following a lucrative trade with the Carolina Panthers. They will look to shore up certain positions such as offensive tackle and defensive line that still have glaring holes.

Here at Bears Wire, we’re going position by position to break down where Chicago stands entering the NFL draft. Up next is cornerback, which appears set at two spots but could still use an upgrade in the draft.

Texas A&M Football 2023 Pro Day Recap: Devon Achane, Antonio Johnson, Jaylon Jones impress in front of NFL Scouts

Personnel from all 32 NFL teams descended upon College Station for the Aggies’ 2023 Pro Day, which featured a handful of former players.

Texas A&M took a brief moment in their 2023 spring football program to welcome some guests to the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band Drill Field. Personnel from all 32 NFL teams descended upon College Station for the Aggies’ 2023 Pro Day, which featured a handful of former players led by running back Devon Achane and defensive backs Antonio Johnson and Jaylon Jones.

With the NFL combine in the books, A&M’s Pro Day marked the latest opportunity for the Maroon and White’s draft prospects to showcase their skills in front of scouting personnel.

For some, it was an opportunity to strengthen their resume, and for others, it provided a chance to improve on their performance at the combine. Prospects were given the opportunity to test in a number of on-field workouts and drills, including the broad jump, vertical jump, 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle, three-cone drill, and bench press

Let’s recap how the Aggies’ trio of prospects performed on Tuesday, in anticipation of hearing their names called in next month’s draft.

2023 NFL Combine results for former Aggie Jaylon Jones

Final results for Jaylon Jones at the 2023 NFL Combine

Speed, strength, and athletic ability are the traits on display during the shirt and shorts Olympics. Scouts and coaches are going through the annual routine of evaluating athletes at the 2023 NFL scouting combine. Over 300 former college football players filed into Lucas Oil Stadium with the opportunity to make a lasting impression on the NFL teams in attendance.

Jaylon Jones was one of three former Aggies participating in this week’s events. The junior cornerback is viewed as a project with good size and average speed. Most evaluations see him being as a possible late-day two-pick and the opportunity to try him at safety.

Here is a look at the final numbers from the NFL combine for former Aggie Jaylon Jones, including his overall grade and projection.

Jaylon Jones and Antonio Johnson speak about their NFL futures at the Combine

Jaylon Jones and Antonio Johnson speak spoke to the media on Thursday during the first day of the NFL combine

On Thursday, March 2nd, The NFL Scouting Combine officially opened as this year’s crop of Defensive linemen and Linebackers hit the field to display their skill sets. During the open media portion on Thursday morning, members of Friday’s Defensive back group, former Aggie cornerbacks Jaylon Jones and Antonio Johnson took the mic to discuss their NFL futures.

What stood out the most during Jaylon Jones’ media availability was his potential connection with former Aggie, and current Dallas Cowboys free agent Donovan Wilson, noting that he has not been in contact with the Cowboys as of Thursday, but stating that it would be a “blessing” to play next to Wilson next season while as as “a sponge” to soak up every piece of playing knowledge the four-year vet has to offer.

Antonio Johnson provided insight on what NFL scouts question the most about his skill set, focusing on his man coverage while noting that some scouts worry about his future turnover production at the next level due to having only one career interception as an Aggie. However, Johnson made it a point of focus on his man coverage tape from his sophomore season against Arkansas, specifically current Tennessee Titans wide receiver Treylon Burks.

What really caught my ear during Johnson’s entire question-and-answer portion came from the College Football Network, which asked how the 2023 Aggie Football squad can get back on track next season,

“Getting the guys to buy in, we have a good group of guys there, we had a young team this year, so we have alot of young talent learning the game there, building themselves as players and humans, so I feel like the leaders that they have and the young guys that they have, theyre on the uprise.”

Make sure to catch both Jaylon Jones and Antonio Johnson on the field on Friday, March 3rd on the NFL Network at 2:00 PM CT.

All-22 from the scouting combine: Defensive backs detail their favorite plays

Christian Gonzalez, Clark Phillips III, Jaylon Jones, and Jammie Robinson detail their most notable college plays from the scouting combine.

INDIANAPOLIS — What’s your one defining moment?

Every prospect at the scouting combine has that one play which defines them to a degree — the highlight shot they think about over and over when it’s time to think about their collegiate careers.

As the defensive backs took the podiums in Indianapolis on Thursday, I thought it would be interesting to ask them which plays they thought best defined them as players. So, here’s Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez, Utah cornerback Clark Phillips III, Texas A&M cornerback Jaylon Jones, and Florida State safety Jammie Robinson on that very subject.

Two Aggies sign with Roc Nation Sports leading up the NFL combine

Jay-Z signs two Aggies to the star-studded roster at Roc Nation Sports

Roc Nation Sports is a sub-division of Roc Nation that founder Shawn Carter also known as “JAY-Z” established in the spring of 2013. They have an impressive roster that spans the globe across multiple sports. A few recognizable names are Dez Bryant, Saquon Barkey, Syler Diggins-Smith, LaMelo Ball, and the list goes on and on.

Roc Nation President Juan Perez gave his vision on how they can help represent their clients in an interview with Sports Business Journal.

“When we launched Roc Nation Sports the plan was to replicate what we did for music artists with athletes,”

Seeing that vision two of the Aggies entering the draft this year decided to join the stacked roster as they move forward with their professional journeys into the NFL. You can view the official announcements below from the Roc Nation Sports Instagram account for Devon Achane and Jaylon Jones.

Three Aggies will make the trip to the NFL Combine

Texas A&M will have three Aggies participating in the 2023 NFL Combine

The NFL has a new champion at the top of the Hill and teams will be looking at the next generation of athletes at the 2023 NFL combine to help unseat the Chief next season. The combine is a great place for a lot of these young men to raise their draft stock or as some would say “earn some extra cash”. A skilled player can jump a whole round if their 40-time clocks in around 4.3.  The one thing you can’t teach is raw speed.

Among the 319 invitees, Texas A&M will be represented by three Aggies at this year’s Annual NFL Scouting Combine:

Devon Achane – The speedster only needed a little bit of space to rip off a long run and was rarely if ever caught from behind. He split time in his first two years with the Aggies before taking over his junior year and receiving a majority of the snaps at tailback. For his career, he amassed 2,930 yards from scrimmage and 26 touchdowns, but running back was not the only position where he shined. Achane’s speed and vision made him a threat on Kick returns as well with him averaging over 30 yards a return with 2 touchdowns on only 20 attempts. One of his most memorable plays was his kick return against the #1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide in 2021 to swing the momentum back in the Aggies’ favor. He recently stated he is looking to run around a 4.2 in the 40-yard dash and is projected to be drafted between rounds 2 – 4.

Antonio Johnson – The 6-3 200-pound safety missed a few games due to injury last season but still managed to help bring much-needed stability to an extremely young defense playing in a new system. His junior campaign was not quite as good as his sophomore year, but there were a lot of factors that contributed to that minimal drop-off. During his time on the field, However, you could still tell he belonged among the top players in the SEC. His best traits that have the NFL really intrigued are his size, physicality, and football IQ. With more athletic Tight ends and bigger slot receivers becoming commonplace in the league the need for a fourth defensive back that can cover and not be a liability in the run game is paramount. Johnson can fill this role perfectly and has the tools to be successful. His career numbers stand at 164 Total Tackles, 2 sacks, and 1 interception. Currently, Antonio Johnson is projected between rounds 1-2.

Jaylon Jones – He is a big explosive corner with a very high ceiling. Jones was a part of one of the better Secondary groups in the country and his coverage skills played a major role. Granted, he is a better zone corner compared to a man corner yet still has the physical abilities to play both at a high level. Jones will have to do some studying and will hopefully be paired with a coach that is good at developing cornerbacks so he can reach that next level. He ended his career at Texas A&M with 98 Tackles, 3 Interceptions, and 17 passes defended. Jaylon Jones is currently projected between rounds 1-2.

Vikings mock draft 5.0: Three deep is back

The Vikings go for a modern version of three deep in the latest seven-round mock draft

The Minnesota Vikings have a lot of different ways they can go in the NFL draft. There will be some discussion on what needs are most important but the Vikings can address most of them through both free agency and the NFL draft.

I have now done four mock drafts for the Vikings this offseason and they all have taken a slightly different turn each time. This one has the Vikings prioritizing a field-stretching receiver.

Mock draft 1.0
Mock draft 2.0
Mock draft 3.0
Mock draft 4.0

Bears 2022 CB review: Jaylon Johnson and young players make strides

Our next Bears position review focuses on the cornerbacks, a group of young players who were tested all season but showed progress.

The Chicago Bears wrapped the 2022 season with a 3-14 record, which culminated in a 10-game losing streak. But there’s still reasons to be optimistic about the future, including a boatload of salary cap space, the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft and the emergence of quarterback Justin Fields.

Here at Bears Wire, we’re going position by position through the 2022 Bears and grading every player. Up next is cornerback, where young players such as Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon made strides throughout the season.
