Broncos ‘still working on’ injury settlement with Jonas Griffith

Sean Payton said the Broncos would “do right” by Jonas Griffith with a settlement on Sept. 2. That settlement is still being finalized.

The Denver Broncos are “still working on” finalizing an injury settlement with former linebacker Jonas Griffith, according to a report from the Denver Gazette‘s Chris Tomasson.

When the Broncos cut Griffith in August, they did not give him an injury designation. Shortly thereafter, Griffith announced that he needed to undergo surgery on the same ACL that he injured with Denver in 2023.

Broncos coach Sean Payton has said the team will “do right” by Griffith by retroactively giving him an injury settlement. The details of that settlement are apparently yet to be finalized.

“We’re going to certainly do right by the player and take care of him,” Payton said on Sept. 2. “He’s someone that’s busted his tail here for the better part of two years trying to stay healthy.”

Denver reached an injury settlement with rookie outside linebacker Jaylon Allen on Aug. 14. Tomasson reports that Allen’s settlement was worth “about $3,000.” Allen (ankle) is now a free agent and once healthy, he might be a candidate to return to the Broncos on the practice squad.

Jaylon Allen is a candidate to return on Broncos’ practice squad

After being waived with an injury designation earlier this month, Jaylon Allen could return to join the Broncos’ practice squad.

Four months ago, the Denver Broncos won a bidding war with three other teams to sign Memphis edge defender Jaylon Allen as an undrafted free agent. To close the deal, the Broncos gave Allen $110,000 guaranteed and a $10,000 signing bonus.

After playing in the team’s preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts, Allen was waived with an injury settlement on Aug. 15. That doesn’t necessarily mean his time in Denver has come to an end.

Allen needed about two weeks to recover from an ankle injury, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. After the Broncos set their 53-man roster and Allen recovers from that injury, he will be “a strong candidate” to return on the practice squad, according to Klis.

Denver will set an initial 53-man roster on Tuesday, then the team will begin building a 17-player practice squad on Wednesday. We will track all of the team’s moves on Broncos Wire, including a potential Allen return.

Broncos roster series: No. 57, OLB Jaylon Allen

Broncos rookie pass rusher Jaylon Allen totaled 12 sacks in his final three seasons at Memphis.

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at rookie outside linebacker Jaylon Allen, No. 57.

Before the Broncos: Allen (6-3, 240 pounds) spent five years at Memphis, earning honorable mention All-AAC recognition in 2022 and second-team all-conference honors in 2023. Allen recorded 150 tackles (26.5 behind the line), 13 sacks, four pass breakups, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, two defensive touchdowns and one interception in 60 games with the Tigers.

Broncos tenure: Denver signed Allen as a college free agent following the 2024 NFL draft. Allen was a defensive lineman at Memphis, but he will play as an outside linebacker in Vance Joseph’s base 3-4 defense.

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Long shot. The Broncos have a crowded OLB room that includes Baron Browning, Jonathon Cooper, Nik Bonitto, Jonah Elliss, Ronnie Perkins and (once healthy) Drew Sanders. Allen is unlikely to make the active roster as a rookie, but he could be a candidate for the practice squad as a backup pass rusher.

Broncos beat 3 teams (including the Raiders) to sign Jaylon Allen

The Broncos beat three other teams (including the Raiders) to sign Memphis pass rusher Jaylon Allen as an undrafted free agent.

As soon as the NFL draft ends, teams begin filling out their 90-man offseason rosters by signing undrafted free agents. The top prospects draw offers from multiple teams, sometimes causing college free agent bidding wars.

So far, the Broncos have agreed to terms with 13 UDFAs, including Memphis edge defender Jaylon Allen. Denver was not the only team interested.

Allen told the Denver Post‘s Ryan McFadden that he turned down offers from the Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Las Vegas Raiders. In college, Allen worked with assistant strength and conditioning coach Sammy Joseph, the younger brother of Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.

That connection probably played a role in Denver beating out three other teams — including a division rival — to land Allen.

Allen was a defensive end for the Tigers but he will likely transition to outside linebacker in the Broncos’ base 3-4 defense. He totaled 12 sacks in his final three seasons at Memphis.

We are tracking all of Denver’s UDFA signings on Broncos Wire.
