Jaylen Wester noticing a ‘brotherhood’ being built within Colorado’s defense

Linebacker Jaylen Wester spoke on how Colorado’s defense can reach championship heights

Building a defense requires everyone to be on the same page and willing to support their teammates.

For Florida Atlantic transfer linebacker Jaylen Wester, he sees the Colorado Buffaloes’ defense rounding into championship form during fall camp. The first-year CU linebacker is competing for playing time at his position, but he sees everyone wanting greatness for each other.

Here’s what Wester had to say about how Colorado’s defense is gelling this preseason:

“We’re all together, and we’re all cheering for the next to be great,” Wester said. “I think if you want to win this year, we got to all come together and build a brotherhood. We’re building a brotherhood. (We’re) coming together each and every day, working hard and bonding so we can get to that championship this year.”

Wester played in 21 games over the past two years with nine starts and accumulated 113 total tackles, 12 TFLs, two sacks, one forced fumble and an interception.

Colorado’s Jaylen Wester among highest-graded returning Big 12 linebackers

Jaylen Wester is more than ready to dominate in the Big 12

Brothers and former Florida Atlantic standouts Jaylen and LaJohntay Wester are two of Colorado football’s most intriguing incoming transfer portal players.

LaJohntay, a wide receiver, shined during the Buffs’ spring game while the younger Jaylen adds some much-needed talent to Colorado’s linebackers room.

According to Pro Football Focus College, the younger Wester comes to Boulder as the second-highest-graded returning LB in the Big 12 Conference. Jaylen’s overall grade of 84.5 ranks behind only Iowa State’s Caleb Bacon, who checked in at 89.3. The only other returning Big 12 linebacker who graded above an 80 was UCF’s Xe’ree Alexander (84.1).

At FAU last season, Jaylen played in 11 games (five starts) while racking up 55 total tackles, 7.5 TFLs, one sack, one forced fumble and two pass breakups. The Palmetto, Florida product had 58 total tackles, 5.5 TFLs and an interception during his freshman campaign in 2022.

LaJohntay’s PFF grade from last season was 82.1, making him the fourth-highest-graded returning Big 12 wide receiver.

CU Buffs linebackers coach Andre’ Hart praises incoming transfer Jaylen Wester

Jaylen Wester’s energy has been impressive this spring

The Colorado Buffaloes are seemingly set at the inside linebacker position with returners such as LaVonta Bentley and former safety Trevor Woods still roaming the defensive side of the ball. However, linebackers coach Andre Hart says one incoming transfer is pushing for playing time.

Speaking with the media on Tuesday, Hart was asked about Florida Atlantic transfer Jaylen Wester. Wester, a 6-foot, 205-pound junior, played in 11 games while starting five for the Owls last season. He compiled 55 total tackles, 7.5 TFLs, one sack and a forced fumble.

According to Hart, Wester is making a strong case to see significant playing time next season:

“Jaylen (Wester) doesn’t have a bad day.” Hart said. “He’s like the energizer bunny out there. He’s twitchy and moving around out there. I think he drinks more coffee than me or my grandmother, and we drink coffee every morning before I come into work. I love Jaylen. He’s going to get better, he’s going to be an asset (and) he’s still competeing to get on the field and start. I think with what Trevor and Bentley have done has made them the frontrunners. No decisions have been made yet, but I like what I see with Jaylen.”

FAU transfer LB Jaylen Wester follows brother LaJohntay to Colorado

Jaylen Wester, the younger brother of recent Colorado commit LaJohntay Wester, is coming to Boulder

Late Saturday evening, Florida Atlantic transfer linebacker Jaylen Wester announced he’d follow his older brother LaJohntay, another former FAU star, to Colorado.

The younger Wester racked up some strong numbers in his first two collegiate seasons. As a freshman in 2022, Wester totaled 60 tackles, one sack and an interception. The 6-foot, 205-pound linebacker followed that up with 56 total tackles, one sack and a forced fumble this past season.

Colorado’s linebacker room needed some attention once DJ Lundy returned to Florida State and while Wester’s commitment helps, I wouldn’t be surprised if head coach Deion Sanders adds another transfer LB.

The Buffaloes now have three sets of brothers on their roster: Shedeur and Shilo Sanders, Kentucky transfers Destin and Keaten Wade, and the Westers. According to BuffsBeat, this is the first time in modern Football Bowl Subdivision history that a team has had three sets of siblings.
