Everything Jaylen Henderson, Ainias Smith, and Edgerrin Cooper had to say after Texas A&M’s 51-10 win over Mississippi State

Hear what Jaylen Henderson, Ainias Smith, and Edgerrin Cooper had to say after Texas A&M’d dominant 51-10 win over Mississippi State.

Texas A&M (6-4, 4-3 SEC) has earned bowl eligibility for the first time in two seasons after putting on an absolute clinic against Mississippi State, systematically destroying the Rebels 51-10 behind, yes, third-string quarterback and former Fresno State Bulldog Jaylen Henderson, paired with a stifling defensive effort. Head coach Jimbo Fisher noted just how much Henderson has learned since entering the program last May.

“Jaylen is a really quick learner. We felt very comfortable. He has gotten better and better in practice. We knew he could play… Four touchdowns and no turnovers.”

Henderson, who is by far the most athletic quarterback on the roster, threw for 150 yards on 11/19 for two touchdowns while liberally using his legs, running for 60 yards and two more touchdowns on 12 carries as well. Henderson’s comfort level in the offense was quite encouraging going forward, as second-year offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino created a simple yet explosive game plan to utilize Henderson’s skillset, but credit to senior wide receiver Ainias Smith (4 receptions, 64 yards, 1 TD) who showed up and showed out all night long.

Defensively, star junior linebacker Edgerrin Cooper (10 tackles) led a ferocious pass rush to the tune of five sacks and seven tackles for loss. In contrast, safety Jared Kerr’s massive hit on QB Mike Wright led to an exciting scoop and score touchdown return from Aggie DT Shemar Stewart early in the 3rd Quarter.

Under head coach Jimbo Fisher, who likely added some insurance to his job security after tonight’s victory, this is the first win over Mississippi State or Ole Miss in five attempts and the largest win over the Bulldogs since 1912 (yes, that long). After every score, celebrations were had, and for the first time in what seemed like forever, this team was having fun again.

After Fisher took the podium, Jaylen Henderson, Ainias Smith, and Edgerrin Cooper all spoke to the media to reflect on their excellent performances on Saturday night while looking toward next week’s matchup vs. ACU. Here is what all three young men had to say on the night.

Texas A&M leads Mississippi State 34-10 at halftime behind a balanced offensive attack

Leading Mississippi State 34-10 at halftime, Texas A&M third-string quarterback Jaylen Henderson has more than steadied the ship thus far.

Texas A&M has wowed all of us this evening, leading Mississippi State 34-10 at the half behind third-string quarterback Jaylen Henderson and a stifling effort from the Aggie’s 15th-ranked defense.

While starting quarterback Max Johnson’s absence was officially announced just minutes before kick-off, all eyes were on Henderson, who, despite possessing impressive athletic traits, had yet to show consistency through the air due to a lack of collegiate playing time.

Nevertheless, offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino devised a solid game plan to get Henderson (7/13, 104 yards, 1 TD, 56 rushing yards, 2 TDs) easy looks and running lanes. At the same time, wide receiver Ainias Smith has been lights out in his own right, already recording a touchdown pass on three catches for 37 yards. Also, credit goes to the Aggies’ offensive line, who have excelled in pass protection while simultaneously opening holes in the running game.

With the return of starting cornerback Tyreek Chappell and Deuce Harmon, the defense has been stellar, recording two interceptions. At the same time, standout linebacker and Bednarik award snub Edgerrin Cooper leads the Aggies in tackles with seven so far. This has been a dominant showing from an inspired group from the looks of it.

Former Fresno State Quarterback Jaylen Henderson commits to Texas A&M

Texas A&M has reportedly landed former Fresno State quarterback Jaylen Henderson through the transfer portal

BOOM! Texas A&M has reportedly landed former Fresno State quarterback Jaylen Henderson through the transfer portal on Sunday, May 7, as head coach Jimbo Fisher will now have four scholarship quarterbacks including Conner Weigman, Max Johnson, and Marcel Reed for the 2023 season.

In late April, Henderson discussed his relationship with the Aggies coaching staff with GigEm247’s Carter Karels, specifically detailing his one-on-one conversations with new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino.

“I loved coach Petrino’s conversation with me,” Henderson stated. “He has a great background. Just to have his interest in me is a blessing. He is confident in the abilities he saw from me, and I am also confident in my abilities. So if I end up going there, I feel like he will be able to truly utilize my ability. I am going to show the world what I can do.”

During his brief two-year stint with the Bulldogs, Henderson received little playing time totaling 49 passing yards and 66 rushing yards after competing with five other quarterbacks on the roster, knowing that his abilities were being vastly underutilized.

Rated as a three-star recruit in the 2021 recruiting cycle, the West Hills, California native will have a fresh start with the Maroon and White, and with three years of eligibility remaining, his development can truly begin under Fisher and Petrino’s tutelage.

Former Fresno State QB Jaylen Henderson discusses his recent offer from Texas A&M

Texas A&M offered former Fresno State quarterback Jaylen Henderson, and in an interview with GigEm247, he discussed his potential fit with the program.

Texas A&M and head coach Jimbo Fisher know that the quarterback position is cyclical, and even though the QB room for 2023 is stable, the future is somewhat bleak as 2024 four-star Anthony Maddox remains the only committed signal caller going forward.

On Saturday, Fisher sent an offer to former Fresno State quarterback Jaylen Henderson, who stands at 6-3 and 216 pounds and still has three seasons of eligibility remaining as a redshirt sophomore, leaving the Bulldogs serving mostly as a reserve. In two full seasons at Fresno State, Henderson totaled 49 passing yards and 66 rushing yards after competing with five other quarterbacks on the roster, greatly in need of a change of scenery.

In an interview with Carter Karels of GigEm247, Henderson discussed what attracted him to Texas A&M the most.

“Coach Petrino was at Louisville with Lamar Jackson. He said my game was kind of similar to his, because I can do a lot of the same stuff that he was doing.” “How I am a dual-threat and can put pressure on a defense, he said that scheme-wise that could be tough for a defense. That is what he liked about my game. Also the fact that I can throw the deep ball, he said that stuck out to him.”

Henderson has only received one other FBS offer in Old Dominion. The Aggies hold an advantage in that regard, especially from a coaching perspective in developing his duel-threat skill set. Henderson further described why the A&M coaching looks like a perfect fit, one of the traits he places high importance in finding a new program.

“Just a great coaching staff that is going to give me a chance to compete for a starting position,” Henderson stated on his biggest priorities when looking at a program. “A coaching staff that I can learn a lot about the game from and really give me a chance to show what I can do. “And a good system for me. I feel like a lot of it deals with the system that a player is in, so the system is really important to me, too.”

Lastly, Henderson’s relationship with Aggie’s newly minted offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino will be key to landing his commitment, and with his experience at developing the quarterback position in his time at Arkansas and Louisville, Jaylen Henderson knows that the sky is the limit when his chance to compete comes to fruition.

Jaylen Henderson would end up joining a QB room with sophomore Conner Weigman, senior Max Johnson, and 2023 four-star signee Marcel Reed.
