UNC football’s top edge rusher tabbed a Man of the Year semifinalist

Kaimon Rucker is a defensive beast for the UNC football team, but he also has a kind heart off the field.

For the North Carolina Tar Heels, calling the 2024 college football season a whirlwind is an understatement.

UNC gave fans some optimism with its 3-0 start, then followed a concerning trend – in recent seasons – with four straight losses.

After the Georgia Tech loss, which North Carolina could’ve won on its last possession, we learned the gut-wrenching news that Tylee Craft lost his long battle to lung cancer.

For a Tar Heels team that’s in desperate need of some good news, it finally received some on Tuesday afternoon.

Kaimon Rucker, UNC’s best edge rusher who led the team in sacks (8.5) and tackles for loss (15) in 2023, was named a semifinalist for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award.

Rucker is one of 20 semifinalists for the Witten Award which, according to its official website, is given to the college football player who best “demonstrates a record of leadership by exhibiting exceptional courage, integrity and sportsmanship both on and off the field.”

“A second-team All-ACC performer in 2023, Rucker is on the watch lists for the Nagurski and Bednarik Awards, and he is the leader of UNC’s defensive unit,” JasonWitten82.com wrote about Rucker. “He is a true standout in the community as well, where he provided personal hygiene items from his personal funds – for fifth graders at his old elementary school – who are experiencing physical changes to their bodies. He conducted a seminar with the fifth graders, primarily males, in an effort to educate them on this phase of their life. Rucker already earned his undergrad degree and is currently pursuing his master’s.”

On the football field this year, Rucker has eight tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack through three games. He previously missed time while recovering from a torn meniscus.

North Carolina will need the best from Rucker going forward if it wants to salvage what’s left of the season.

UNC defensive leader nominated for prestigious award

While UNC waits for Kaimon Rucker’s return to the football field, Rucker earned a nomination for a prestigious award.

The North Carolina Tar Heels could greatly benefit from the defensive presence of Kaimon Rucker.

Rucker, who led UNC with 8.5 sacks and 15 tackles for loss in 2023, has missed the past three games while recovering from a lower-body injury. After generating solid pressure their first two games, the Tar Heels have four total sacks between the NCCU win and JMU loss.

North Carolina’s defense was torched by the Dukes, who won 70-50. A major reason behind that was UNC leaving JMU receivers in wide-open space, but a lack of pressure contributed to JMU’s success, too.

While Rucker is known for his on-field contributions, he was recently nominated for a prestigious off-field award: the Jason Witten Man of the Year Award.

The award is, according to future Hall of Fame NFL tight end Jason Witten’s official website, awarded annually to the college football player who has demonstrated a record of leadership by exhibiting exceptional courage, integrity and sportsmanship on and off the field.

There’s still no definite word on when Rucker will return to the field, though UNC head coach Mack Brown previously said he won’t be out for the season. The Tar Heels could greatly benefit from Rucker’s presence, though – could he be the defensive difference-maker they’re missing?

Josh Williams named finalist for Jason Witten Man of the Year Award

Josh Williams was one of 20 finalists for the Jason Witten Man of the Year Award.

LSU running back [autotag]Josh Williams[/autotag] was named a finalist for the Jason Witten Man of the Year Award. The award acknowledges a player for their leadership ability on and off the field.

Williams, who began his LSU career as a walk-on, earned a scholarship and became a factor in the LSU running back room and on special teams.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] has praised Williams for his leadership on several occasions and selected him as one of LSU’s representatives at SEC media days in the summer.

Williams is averaging a career-high 8.5 yards per attempt in 2023 and with 888 rushing yards in his career, he has a chance to reach the 1,000-yard mark soon.

He led LSU running backs in 2022 with 532 running yards, which included some big plays against Alabama.

Williams was one of 20 finalists for the award. Other notable nominees include Notre Dame’s Sam Hartman, USC’s Caleb Williams, and FSU’s Jordan Travis.

Last year’s award went to Pittsburgh’s Deslin Alexandre.
