Cameron Smith chasing Jason Scrivener at 2022 Fortinet Australian PGA Championship

Cameron Smith is showing out in his return home.

Cameron Smith is making the most of his return to Australia for the first time in three years.

The third-ranked golfer in the world fired a second-round 6-under 65 on Friday at the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland Golf Club in Brisbane, moving into solo second at 9 under through 36 holes at one of the biggest golf events Down Under. Smith trails leader Jason Scrivener by one shot heading to the third round.

Scrivener, who was tied for the first-round lead, shot 67 on Friday to take control of the lead.

“Yesterday it was pretty stress-free and I hit the ball tee to green really well,” Scrivener said. “Today it was a little scrappier, got away with a few things and scrambled well. All in all, pretty happy with it.”

Masahiro Kawamura and Cameron John are tied for third at 8 under.

Adam Scott, who shot 5 under in the opening round, shot 1 over on Friday, his lone highlight coming with a long birdie putt on the 17th hole. Min Woo Lee, who shared the first-round lead with Scrivener, shot 2 over in the second round and is at 4 under for the tournament with Scott.

Jason Scrivener leads Scandinavian Mixed but there’s an Arizona Wildcat freshman tied for second

Jason Scrivener leads but just two shots back are two women, including a 19-year-old college student.

The Scandinavian Mixed 2022 is a unique event in pro golf, with a field of 78 men and 78 women from the DP World Tour and the LET competing against each other for one trophy and one first-place check.

After two rounds, Jason Scrivener is 12 under and holds a two-shot lead. He had eight birdies Friday, including four in a row on his back nine, en route to a 64. He’s 214th in the latest Official World Golf Ranking and has yet to win on the DP Tour.

There’s a three-way tie for second at 10 under and there are two women in that group, including Italian Carolina Melgrati, 19, who just finished her freshman year at the University of Arizona. She started her week with a 65 and was tied for the lead after the first round. A second-round 69 has her in contention to win as an amateur this week.

“It is crazy! It is so great,” Melgrati said after her first round. “As soon as I got the invitation, I said yes, I’m playing because it is great to compete with professional golfers. It is amazing and that is also my dream, so it is coming true.”

Melgrati is joined at 10 under by Linn Grant, a former Arizona State standout who turned pro last September. Playing in her native Sweden, Grant won two weeks ago at The Mithra Belgian Ladies Open.

Also at 10 under is Mike Lorenzo-Vera.

The event has Volvo Car as the title sponsor, is co-hosted by Annika Sorenstam and Henrik Stenson and is being staged at Halmstad Golf Club in Halmstad, Sweden.

The Australian Jasons tie Zurich Classic alternate shot record with a 7-under 65

Never heard the name, Jason Scrivener? Well, you’re not alone. He doesn’t have PGA Tour status but this week is partnering with pal Jason Day.

Never heard the name, Jason Scrivener? Well, you’re not alone. He doesn’t have PGA Tour status and plays most of his golf on the DP World Tour. But this week, he’s joined good pal and fellow Aussie Jason Day at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the pair went deep during Friday’s second round of alternate shot.

“Just known each other for a while and we’ve got the same agent,” Scrivener said when asked how the partnership came to be, “and I just messaged Jase, asked if he needed a partner, and he said yes.”

That text is paying dividends.

The Australians started their round with a nice birdie on the first after Day put his approach to six feet. Back-to-back birdies came at 4 and 5 before an eagle on 7, set up by Day’s 255-yard 3-wood finishing a mere 12 feet from the hole.

“Gripped down, high kind of like just fading this thing back into the wind to kill it enough to land soft enough,” Day said of the shot, “and fortunately for us this morning the greens were very receptive.”

After playing their next three holes in even par, they got back on track playing holes 11-14 at 3 under. A bogey on 17 and failing to birdie the par-5 last derailed their chances of beating their best-ball score from Thursday, and the Zurich alternate shot tournament record, but nevertheless the Aussies made a big jump up the leaderboard.

“I think we just kind of got on a roll today. We both were hitting fairways and greens and giving ourselves looks at it,” Day said. “Managed to roll a few in. I think it was just basically mistake-free. I think that was the biggest part.”

Day’s last three starts have ended with a Friday trunk slam, and his last win dates back to the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship. Despite the drought, the 12-time Tour winner isn’t getting ahead of himself.

“Obviously, it would be nice to win, but I can’t think about outcome stuff because obviously that’s going to stress me out if I think about it too much and things don’t happen my way,” he said. “Right now I’m just focused on trying to stay as present as possible every single day.”

The Jasons posted a 36-hole aggregate of 14-under 128, three back of the lead held by Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, and squarely in contention heading into the weekend.
