Bears hiring ex-Titans OL coach Jason Houghtaling

Former Titans OL coach Jason Houghtaling is reportedly being hired by the Bears.

It didn’t take long for former Tennessee Titans offensive line coach Jason Houghtaling to find a new job after being let go.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Chicago Bears are hiring Houghtaling as their assistant offensive line coach.

Houghtaling was first hired by the Titans in 2021 as an assistant offensive line coach. He spent two years in that role before being promoted in 2023.

The Titans sported one of the worst offensive lines in the sport under his watch, but Houghtaling was also dealt a bad hand with the unit seriously lacking talent.

While Houghtaling has found a new job, the Titans have yet to find his replacement. However, Tennessee could land one of two very prominent coaches to fill the void.

Head coach Brian Callahan’s dad, Bill Callahan, might be an option if he’s able to leave the Cleveland Browns, and former Titans head coach and offensive line coach Mike Munchak is open to returning.

But he joined the Tennessee Titans as an assistant offensive line coach in 2021, and two years later he was promoted to offensive line coach. At the college level, Houghtaling has served as offensive line coach, offensive coordinator and head coach with stops at Wagner and Cornell.

The Bears have made the following hires under Waldron: Kerry Joseph (quarterbacks coach), Chad Morton (running backs coach), Chris Beatty (wide receivers coach), Thomas Brown (passing game coordinator) and now Houghtaling.

Mike Vrabel: Titans OL coach Jason Houghtaling crushed interview

Mike Vrabel was very impressed with Jason Houghtaling during his interview for the Titans’ OL coach role.

The Tennessee Titans decided to go in a different direction for their offensive line coach this offseason after the team parted ways with Keith Carter back in January.

After nearly a month-long search, the Titans landed on an in-house option in assistant offensive line coach, Jason Houghtaling (pronounced HO-tail-ing, according to the team’s official site).

Houghtaling has been with the Titans for the past two seasons. Prior to that, he served as the head coach at Wagner for five years (2015-19), and was Colgate’s offensive line coach in 2020.

When talking about the team’s recent coaching staff additions, head coach Mike Vrabel lauded Houghtaling for knocking his interview out of the park.

“He’s a great teacher, and he’s worked in multiple schemes,” Vrabel said, per Jim Wyatt of Titans Online. “It was probably one of the best interviews I’ve had in five years.

“I am extremely happy and excited to give him this opportunity. That group and that unit has to get better, and it starts by finding guys that can come in and develop and be coached.”

Not only does Houghtaling have a tough task in helping to get an offensive line that is sure to have a ton of turnover back on track, he’s also tasked with finding the right balance in his approach.

That’s because Carter appeared to rub players the wrong way with his hard-nosed approach, something left tackle Taylor Lewan went over in detail recently. He also might’ve had a hand in Ty Sambrailo’s unexpected retirement.
