Washington State is coached by Nick Rolovich.

Rolovich went 1-3 during his first season as the Cougars’ head coach in 2020. He played quarterback at Hawaii and served as the Rainbow Warriors’ head coach from 2016-19.

At Hawaii, Rolovich compiled a 28-27 record with two bowl victories.

Rolovich fields a run and shoot offense that Guarantano will play in.

The offense centers around two formations, typically with four wide receivers and trips to the left or right. A run and shoot offense is designed to read defensive coverages on the snap of the ball, while showcasing wide receivers in motion.

Rolovich joined the show “Tennessee Two-A-Days” and discussed Guarantano transferring to Washington State and playing in his run and shoot offense.

“We were looking at the portal and who fits what we were looking for, and we knew what we needed, and we felt, as far as for us to elevate the room, competition and all that,” Rolovich said of Guarantano. “Jarrett checked a lot of the boxes. I really like his toughness. I like the class and respect, and how he handled himself off the field. I think he is a real man of character.”

The entire show with Rolovich can be listened to here or below. Rolovich discussed the run and shoot offense and Guarantano going through spring practices competing for the Cougars’ starting job.

Jeremy Pruitt discusses Vols’ quarterback unit

Tennessee plays Texas A&M Saturday at Neyland Stadium.

Tennessee kicked off game week ahead of playing Texas A&M.

The Vols and Aggies kick off at noon EST Saturday. ESPN will televise the contest.

Tennessee started freshman quarterback Harrison Bailey the last two games with redshirt sophomore signal-caller J.T. Shrout splitting reps.

Vols’ head coach Jeremy Pruitt discussed if Bailey and Shrout feed off each other splitting reps within games. Both have split reps since redshirt senior Jarrett Guarantano was relieved of starting. Sophomore Brian Maurer has also been inserted in games for situational plays.

“I think both of them are really good teammates and throw Brian in there,” Pruitt said. “With Brian, we’ve tried to create a little bit of a role with him. He made a really good run down there and kind of turned his ankle a little bit. Just with the quarterback room on Saturday, I thought Jarrett did a heck of a job on the sideline with Coach (Chris) Weinke and helping those guys. I really like the way that room is.

“These younger guys are getting opportunities and they are trying to make the most of it. They probably make mistakes that a lot of people don’t see, but they are learning from it. They are gaining confidence. The game is going to slow down for them the more they play. It’s good to see both of these guys go out there and improve each week.”

Jeremy Pruitt updates Vols’ quarterback depth chart ahead of Vanderbilt game

Tennessee will play at Vanderbilt Saturday.

Tennessee will travel to Vanderbilt Saturday for an in-state SEC East matchup.

Tennessee enters the contest following a 31-19 loss to Florida. The Vols played three quarterbacks against Florida in Harrison Bailey, Brian Maurer and J.T. Shrout.

Kicking off Vanderbilt game week, third-year Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt addressed the Vols’ quarterback unit Monday.

“Harrison and J.T. will take the majority of the reps moving forward,” Pruitt said. “Brian brings an extra element with his athleticism. We’re trying to keep him with a role. I thought he did a nice job on Saturday with the role that he had. We’ll continue doing that moving forward.”

Redshirt senior quarterback Jarrett Guarantano did not play against the Gators. Pruitt discussed if Guarantano will be in the rotation for Tennessee this week and to conclude the regular season.

“We’re going to go with Harrison and J.T., and probably stay with the same schedule as we did this past week,” Pruitt said.

Jeremy Pruitt details Vols’ plan of playing both Harrison Bailey, J.T. Shrout against Florida

Florida defeated Tennessee, 31-19.

No. 6 Florida (8-1, 8-1 SEC) defeated Tennessee, 31-19, Saturday at Neyland Stadium.

The Vols featured three quarterbacks against Florida. Freshman Harrison Bailey started the contest and Brian Maurer and J.T. Shrout also played.

Following the loss to Florida, third-year Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt discussed his quarterbacks.

“J.T. really had two weeks of really good practice, and then on Wednesday, he was throwing a ball and then his shoulder popped,” Pruitt said. “We didn’t really even know if he could play going into today, but he felt like he could. We had a plan to play both of the guys going in if J.T. could. We went with Harrison to start and were rocking along okay. I know we didn’t create a ton of explosive plays, but we were kind of changing the momentum of the game there and then gave up a drive right before halftime.

“As the game went in the second half, there were a couple plays that I thought maybe we could have been a little more aggressive on. J.T. is, from an experience standpoint, two years older than Harrison, so just getting him out there and going, I thought he did a nice job at the end.”

Bailey finished the contest 14-of-21 for 111 yards and one touchdown. He was sacked five times.

Shrout completed 12 of 14 passes for 121 yards and one touchdown. He was sacked one time. Maurer completed his only passing attempt for eight yards.

Redshirt senior quarterback Jarrett Guarantano did not play against the Gators.

“He hadn’t practiced in 13 days,” Pruitt said of Guarantano. “A lot of those guys had not practiced in 13 days that played today. It’s probably a lot tougher on a quarterback.”

Pruitt was also asked about the quarterback unit going forward with games against Vanderbilt and Texas A&M remaining in the regular season.

“Every week — so you all will never have to ask me this again — every week we see who competes well in practice, who does the best job that we feel like affects the guys around him, and we will do that as long as I’m the head football coach here at every position, so you don’t have to ask me again,” Pruitt said.

Smoke Monday describes pick six, Jarrett Guarantano staring down receivers

Smoke Monday describes pick-six, Jarrett Guarantano staring down receivers.

With 2 minutes and 38 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Tennessee trailed Auburn, 13-10.

The Vols faced a second-and-7 from Auburn’s 12-yard line. Out of shotgun in 11-personnel, redshirt senior quarterback Jarrett Guarantano called for a snap with three seconds remaining on the play clock.

He faked a handoff to running back Eric Gray and looked immediately to his right on the short-side of the field. In a triangular stance, throwing off his back foot, Guarantano thew the ball into the end zone.

Auburn’s Smoke Monday read Guarantano’s pass and he intercepted it. Monday returned the interception 100 yards for an Auburn touchdown.

Monday said Guarantano is “one of those quarterbacks who loved to stare his receivers down.”

Auburn went on to defeat Tennessee, 30-17.

Jeremy Pruitt details how Jarrett Guarantano ‘absolutely’ gives Vols best chance to win

Jeremy Pruitt details how Jarrett Guarantano ‘absolutely’ gives Vols best chance to win.

No. 21 Auburn (5-2, 5-2 SEC) defeated Tennessee (2-5, 2-5 SEC), 30-17, Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

The defeat is Tennessee’s fifth consecutive loss this season.

Redshirt senior quarterback Jarrett Guarantano finished the contest 15-for-23, 156 yards and one interception. His interception came in the end zone as Auburn’s Smoke Monday returned it 100-yards for a touchdown.

Following the game, third-year head coach Jeremy Pruitt discussed if Guarantano gives Tennessee the best chance to win.

“Absolutely,” Pruitt said of Guarantano. “If I didn’t, I wouldn’t play him. I mean, guys, he didn’t miss two field goals. He didn’t blow a coverage. There’s lots of things. Did he make a mistake? He made a mistake. Absolutely. I made mistakes in the game. Ok?

“So the bottom line is, guys, we all have to execute a little bit better to be productive, so we can score more points on Saturday than the other team does.”

Al Borges details coaching, developing quarterbacks

Al Borges details coaching, developing quarterbacks.

Al Borges was an important part of Auburn’s undefeated and Southeastern Conference championship team in 2004.

Borges helped develop senior quarterback Jason Campbell (6-foot-5, 228 pounds) in one season into an NFL first-round draft pick.

He was hired as Auburn’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach ahead of the 2004 campaign.

During Campbell’s first three seasons at Auburn, he experienced a new offensive coordinator each year.

Borges quickly developed Campbell and provided him stability to grow as a signal-caller.

“We were a complete football team,” Borges said of Auburn in 2004 on the show “Tennessee Two-A-Days.” “The missing cog of the chain was getting our quarterback confident. Once Jason quit worrying about making mistakes, and let it rip and play, he turned the page and made our offense everything it could be.”

Borges develops quarterbacks with a focus on footwork, stance and having confidence.

“I always coach the quarterback about 90 percent from the waist down and neck up,” Borges said. “Get him some good functional intelligence and do a good job of teaching him your system. Footwork is just a huge part of it.

“It’s such a huge part of how you teach the quarterback; is footwork, timing, his balance, the rhythm of the throws and getting him to know when to release the ball and making sure he is hitting the receiver as he comes open – not when he’s open, but as he comes open. All of things that I learned at a very early age, and as I coached longer and understood it better, I could implement it easier. You get a willing participant like Jason Campbell who kind of fed on anything you said, was just looking for an opportunity to show what he could do.”

Campbell appeared in 49 games at Auburn from 2001-04. He totaled 7,373 passing yards, 45 touchdowns and 25 interceptions to go along with 308 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.

Tennessee redshirt senior quarterback Jarrett Guarantano (6-foot-4, 230 pounds) has experienced similar turnover in having numerous offensive coordinators during his collegiate career.

Since 2016, Guarantano has played for offensive coordinators Mike DeBord, Larry Scott, Tyson Helton and Jim Chaney during his career at Tennessee. Chris Weinke has served as his quarterbacks coach for the past two seasons.

Through 40 games at Tennessee, Guarantano has totaled 6,018 passing yards and 16 interceptions to go along with -56 yards rushing and four touchdowns.

Guarantano has lacked progression with his footwork, stance and confidence from a standpoint of overthinking initial instincts, much like Borges detailed how Campbell needed to “quit worrying about making mistakes.”

Ahead of last season’s loss to Georgia State, Guarantano described how he is a thinker before games.

“I am really a thinker,” Guarantano said. “Going into a game, going into whatever it is, I am always thinking about what I can do better. I am thinking about different concepts and defenses that can be shown.”

The entire show with Borges can be listened to here or below.

Ahead of playing at Auburn, Tigers’ head coach Gus Malzahn discussed Guarantano.

“You can tell he’s a veteran guy who has played a lot of ball,” Malzahn said of Guarantano. “In our league, there’s nothing like experience, especially at the quarterback position.

“Our league’s different than other leagues. He’s played a lot of football and has a lot of experience.”
