Matt LaFleur: Jared Veldheer adds depth to Packers’ OL room

The Packers are trying to get Veldheer acclimated so he can add valuable depth at offensive tackle.

The Green Bay Packers have offensive tackle Jared Veldheer in the building and ready to practice on Tuesday, and coach Matt LaFleur believes the veteran – who played in two big games for the Packers last season – can add valuable depth along the offensive line.

The Packers signed Veldheer after his stint on the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad ended this past week.

“You can never have enough great players, and Jared is a guy who we definitely hold in high regard. It definitely adds depth to that room, which you can’t have enough of,” LaFleur said.

Veldheer replaced right tackle Bryan Bulaga in both Week 17 and the NFC Divisional Round last season, including a start against the Seattle Seahawks in the postseason.

This past Saturday, Veldheer started at left tackle for the Colts after being a gameday elevation from the practice squad. He was eligible to join the Packers after the Colts lost to the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Wild Card Round.

LaFleur isn’t certain how much Veldheer can contribute right away, but he does have experience in the offense from last season, helping expedite the process of getting back up to speed in Green Bay.

“We have to wait and see, see how much recall he has from last year. He just played in a game this weekend in a totally different offense. We’ll try to get him acclimated and welcome him back as soon as possible,” LaFleur said.

The Packers could use Veldheer, who has over 100 career starts, as a backup behind Billy Turner, who replaced David Bakhtiari (injured reserve) at left tackle, and Rick Wagner, the new starter at right tackle. Wagner was on the injury report in Week 17 with a knee injury but played through the issue.

The Packers host the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday at Lambeau Field.

How Packers OL Jared Veldheer can make NFL history by playing for two playoff teams in one postseason

History!

See that photo above? That was Indianapolis Colts offensive lineman Jared Veldheer — a veteran tackle who has played with the Raiders, Cardinals, Broncos, Packers and Colts in his career — celebrating a touchdown with his teammates last weekend in the Colts’ loss to the Buffalo Bills.

This weekend, Veldheer could be celebrating touchdowns with another playoff team: the Green Bay Packers. If he plays, he would be the first player in NFL history to play two playoff games for two different teams in the postseason?

How is that possible, you ask?

It all has to do with the practice squad rules in a season like no other. From ESPN:

He is allowed to sign with Green Bay because he was on the Colts’ practice squad and was elevated only for the Colts’ playoff game Saturday and not signed to the 53-man roster. In addition, he should be allowed to practice immediately because was in the Colts’ COVID-19 testing program.

It’s quite a continuation of Veldheer’s story after he’d been lured out of retirement by the Colts.

A pretty wild story, isn’t it?

Jared Veldheer provides valuable insurance, options for Packers

The Packers are about to add some valuable veteran experience at offensive tackle to start the playoff run.

The new practice squad rules for the 2020 season provided an opportunity for the Green Bay Packers to add valuable insurance and options at offensive tackle for the playoff run.

Jared Veldheer, who became available as a free agent after playing in two games as a practice squad elevation for the Indianapolis Colts, will sign with the Packers, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Veldheer wasn’t on the Colts’ 53-man roster and became eligible to sign with any team after Indianapolis lost to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. New rules this season allowed teams to sign veterans to the practice squad, and all players on the practice squad were allowed two elevations to the gameday roster.

The Packers, in need of depth at offensive tackle after losing David Bakhtiari to a season-ending injury, jumped at the opportunity to add veteran help at a key position once Veldheer’s stint on the Colts practice squad officially ended.

Veldheer started at left tackle in place of Anthony Castonzo for the Colts in both Week 17 and the AFC Wild Card Round. Last season, Veldheer arrived in Green Bay in December and played a vital role as a backup behind Bryan Bulaga at right tackle. He played in two games, once as a replacement for Bulaga in Week 17 at Detroit and once as a starter for Bulaga during the NFC Divisional Round against the Seattle Seahawks.

The Packers now have options. In Week 17, coach Matt LaFleur decided to have Billy Turner play left tackle and Rick Wagner play right tackle. Turner can also play either guard spot, and Wagner is still dealing with a knee injury. LaFleur is always attempting to find his best starting five, especially given all the versatility in his offensive line room, and Veldheer adds another variable to the mix. Should he want to shuffle the line, or either Turner or Wagner suffer an injury, LaFleur now has an experienced offensive tackle option in Veldheer who can play either side of the line and knows the offense.

This is the kind of signing that could make the difference between being one-and-done and a Super Bowl run. Protecting the quarterback is vital in all games but especially the postseason, where just one bad play – or one bad injury – could torpedo a season.

Veldheer played two full games at left tackle for the Colts and didn’t give up a sack. Even at age 33 and without playing during the first 15 weeks of the season, he held up just fine at a key position in big games.

The Packers will now go into Saturday’s divisional round showdown with the Los Angeles Rams with three experienced offensive tackles they can trust, including two – Veldheer and Turner – who can likely play both left and right tackle. Most teams, even some playoff teams, don’t have two quality options at offensive tackle. The Packers have three, and that’s not even counting the five-time All-Pro on injured reserve.

Counting Veldheer, GM Brian Gutekunst has now added three veterans over the last month – including Tavon Austin and Snacks Harrison – capable of playing key roles and helping the Packers make a Super Bowl run. Losing Bakhtiari still hurts, but adding Veldheer certainly lessens the blow.

Former Cardinals OL Jared Veldheer can make playoff history with Packers

He can be the first player to play for two different teams in the same postseason.

Offensive lineman Jared Veldheer has not been with the Arizona Cardinals since they traded him to the Denver Broncos in 2018 for a sixth-round pick. However, he is set to make NFL history in the postseason.

Veldheer could play for two teams in the same postseason.

Signed to the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad at the end of the season, he was elevated to the active roster to start in the Colts’ playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The Green Bay Packers signed him to their active roster and he will be available to play when the Packers take on the Los Angeles Rams.

If he plays in that game, he will be the first player to ever play for two different teams in the same playoffs.

Veldheer announced his retirement in 2019 but then returned to play the end of the season with the Packers and in the postseason. He did the same thing this year with the Colts.

He has had a nice career. To be able to end it making playoff history isn’t a bad way to go.

Packers signing veteran OT Jared Veldheer away from Colts

The Packers are bringing back Jared Veldheer, who played for the Colts in the playoffs this past weekend.

The Green Bay Packers are adding veteran help at offensive tackle by bringing back a familiar face before beginning their playoff run.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Packers are signing Jared Veldheer, who started at left tackle for the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Wild Card Round on Saturday and also started a playoff game at right tackle for Green Bay last January.

Veldheer, now 33, was on the Colts’ practice squad and became eligible to sign with any team after the Colts lost to the Buffalo Bills. He was elevated twice by the Colts, in Week 17 and the AFC Wild Card Round, playing 146 total snaps in the two games.

Bringing back Veldheer provides another potential starting option at offensive tackle for the Packers, who host the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Divisional Round on Saturday. At the very least, his return gives the Packers extra insurance after losing left tackle David Bakhtiari to a season-ending knee injury.

In response to losing Bakhtiari, the Packers played Billy Turner at left tackle and Rick Wagner at right tackle against the Chicago Bears in the season finale. Veldheer could be the top backup to both in the playoffs, or a potential starter if Matt LaFleur wants to move Turner back to right guard.

The Packers originally claimed Veldheer off of waivers last December. He replaced Bryan Bulaga at right tackle in Week 17 and again in the NFC Divisional Round against the Seattle Seahawks. He started and played all 63 snaps in the win at Lambeau Field.

Veldheer has played in 121 career regular-season games and six playoff games. He was originally a third-round pick of the Raiders in 2010.

According to Schefter, Veldheer could become the first player in NFL history to play a postseason game with two different teams in the same year, a result of the new veteran practice squad rules in 2020.

Packers sign OT Jared Veldheer from Colts practice squad

Packers signed Veldheer from the practice squad.

The Green Bay Packers signed offensive tackle Jared Veldheer off of the Indianapolis Colts practice squad on Monday.

After filling in for the Colts at left tackle to replace regular starter Anthony Castonzo, Veldheer continues his postseason by signing with a team he spent the 2019 season with.

By signing with the Packers mid-postseason, Veldheer became the first player in NFL history to play two postseason games for two different playoff teams.

Veldheer came off the street and helped the Colts get into the postseason, anchoring the left tackle spot when they needed help after Castonzo underwent season-ending ankle surgery.

The Packers also lost their starting left tackle in David Bakhtiari so bringing in Veldheer can help further their playoff run after they got the bye week as the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

3 Colts to watch vs. Jaguars in Week 17

Keep an eye on these Colts on Sunday.

The Indianapolis Colts (10-5) wrap their regular season with a home matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-14) on Sunday.

As the Colts prepare for their regular-season finale, they will need some help getting into the playoffs from some other teams also in the race. They need either the Dolphins, Titans, Browns or Ravens to lose mixed with a Colts win.

Here’s a look at three Colts to watch in the finale:

Colts elevate OT Jared Veldheer among several roster moves

Colts made some moves on Saturday.

The Indianapolis Colts made several roster moves ahead of the regular-season finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team announced Saturday.

To start off the moves, the Colts activated tight end Noah Togiai from the injured reserve list. He missed three games due to injury and returned to practice last week.

The Colts also waived wide receiver Marcus Johnson. It will be interesting to see if the Colts try to retain him on the practice squad.

In addition, the Colts elevated offensive tackle Jared Veldheer and safety Ibraheim Campbell from the practice squad to the active roster. It was expected that Veldheer would be elevated after the Colts signed him this week,

Colts sign OT Jared Veldheer to the practice squad

Colts make a practice squad move.

The Indianapolis Colts signed offensive tackle Jared Veldheer to the practice squad and released tight end Andrew Vollert from the practice squad, the team announced Thursday.

Veldheer visited the Colts earlier in the week as they try to sift through their offensive tackle situation. The Colts did get Braden Smith back from the reserve/COVID-19 list but they will be without left tackle Anthony Castonzo for the remainder of the season.

Castonzo suffered an ankle injury last week and underwent surgery to correct it.

Veldheer will likely compete for the starting left tackle spot with Chaz Green and Will Holden, the latter of which will be out on Sunday due to an ankle injury of his own.

The Colts need to win and get some help from other teams in order to make the playoffs, and they are hoping to survive without their starting left tackle.

Colts hosted OT Jared Veldheer on a visit

The Indianapolis Colts hosted free-agent offensive tackle Jared Veldheer on a visit Monday, per the league’s transaction wire.

There is no denying the Colts need help at the offensive tackle position. Starting tackles Braden Smith (COVID-19) and Anthony Castonzo (knee/ankle) both missed the Week 16 loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Le’Raven Clark is on the injured reserve list with a torn Achilles and one of the replacements in Will Holden suffered an ankle injury during the Week 16 loss. The Colts are currently down to two healthy offensive tackles in J’Marcus Webb, who has reverted to the practice squad, and Chaz Green.

Veldheer, 33, was a third-round pick with the Oakland Raiders in the 2010 NFL draft. He’s appeared in 120 career games with 113 starts working at both the right and left tackle positions.

The Colts are in wait-and-see mode with their starters. The team won’t reveal if Smith was a positive test for COVID-19 or a close contact. If he’s the latter, he can return Wednesday. If he’s a positive test, he has to sit out 10 days if asymptomatic or 14 days if symptomatic.

It also isn’t clear if Castonzo will be ready to play in the regular-season finale. He’s been dealing with a knee injury but also suffered an ankle injury during Thursday’s practice ahead of the Week 16 game against the Steelers.

It will be interesting to see if anything comes of this visit, especially seeing as the Colts are thin at the tackle position.
