Jared Keyte has a new role with Rutgers football coaching staff

Jared Keyte has a new role on the Rutgers football coaching staff.

Jared Keyte is making a transition this offseason on the coaching, this after filling in last year as the defensive line coach.

Keyte will be the nickels coach this year for Rutgers. Last year, Keyte stepped in when [autotag]Marquise Watson[/autotag] was unable to coach the unit.

As for Keyte, he will remain in a quality control role but will move to the backend. He came to Rutgers after being the defensive coordinator at Maine in 2022. In his four previous seasons at Maine, Keyte was the special teams coordinator.

This is Keyte’s second season back at Rutgers, where he had originally been on staff in 2015.

Keyte earned praise from head coach Greg Schiano last fall for stepping into a difficult spot.

“Coach Keyte has done a really good job. You know, he’s been a defensive coordinator at the FCS level,” Schiano said on Wednesday following practice.

“He’s a very knowledgeable football coach and he was working kind of in a quality control position with the defensive line. And when coach Watson fell ill, he stepped in and has done a very good job. He’s kept it kept it together.”

Rutgers football: Jared Keyte’s experience is showing as he steps in for Marquise Watson

Greg Schiano praised Jared Keyte for stepping into a big role for Rutgers football.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Stepping into a difficult role, Jared Keyte has earned a lot of respect around Rutgers football. Acting as the defensive line coach, Keyte certainly faces a complicated situation.

When defensive line coach Marquise Watson developed a health issue prior to the season opener against Northwestern, it was Keyte who stepped up to lead the unit. The affable and gregarious Watson is highly-regarded as a defensive line coach, and he shoulders much of the credit for developing the position group into one of the top in the Big Ten over the past two years.

But Keyte is certainly no slouch and has a strong resume that he brings into the position. And while he isn’t an interim positional coach, he has certainly made an impression in taking on the role for Watson while he continues his recovery.

This is Keyte’s second stint at Rutgers. In 2015, he was a quality control coach who worked with the linebackers.

In 2021, Keyte was the special teams coordinator at Maine. Last year, he was the program’s defensive coordinator.

He joined Rutgers in March as a quality control coach.

The defense as a whole is playing well. Defensive coordinator Joe Harasymiak and linebackers coach Corey Hetherman were praised by Schiano for chipping in and helping Keyte with his workload.

“And really, we have some good leadership at the position. I think between all of them, they’ve really made it work,” Schiano said.

“Coach Harasymiak, coach Hetherman – everybody kind of just pitching in and that’s what families do when something happens like that.”

Former Maine defensive coordinator Jared Keyte is now an assistant with Rutgers football

Jared Keyte has joined the Rutgers football staff.

Jared Keyte has joined Rutgers football as a defensive line assistant, a move that the coach announced via his social media this week.

Keyte will work with defensive line coach [autotag]Marquise Watson[/autotag], who is now in his second year with the Scarlet Knights.

This is a not insignificant move as last season, Keyte was the defensive coordinator at Maine, one of the powerhouse programs in the FCS. At Maine, he was a special teams coordinator who then progressed into different assistant roles coaching safeties, linebackers before eventually becoming defensive coordinator.

He joins the growing Maine connection on the Rutgers staff. Defensive coordinator [autotag]Joe Harasymiak[/autotag] was a head coach at Maine prior to his move to Minnesota. And Cory Hetherman, the linebackers coach at Rutgers, was an assistant at Maine from 2015-18.

This is Keyte’s second stint with Rutgers. In 2015, he was a quality control coach. From New York, he was a former college quarterback at Utica.
