3 Stars from Oklahoma’s 51-3 win over the Temple Owls

The Oklahoma Sooners got off to a great start in their 51-3 win over the Temple Owls, and here are this week’s three stars.

The Oklahoma Sooners opened the season with a 51-3 win over the Temple Owls on Friday night. It wasn’t a perfect performance, but there were a great many positives to take away from the win.

But on both sides of the ball, there were impact players, so let’s take a look at this week’s three stars of the game.

Third Star: Jackson Arnold, QB

Seth Littrell and the Oklahoma Sooners didn’t ask [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag] to do too much in this game, but he was effective with what he was asked to do. The first throw of the game was fantastic, a deep strike to Jalil Farooq for 47 yards.

Arnold attempted just two passes beyond 20 yards, which will not indicate his passing chart week-to-week. One was the reception by Farooq and the other was a beautiful deep ball down the sideline to a covered J.J. Hester who let the ball go through his hands.

Behind a patchwork offensive line, Arnold made good decisions, got the ball out quickly and tried to make things happen with his legs when it wasn’t there for him through the air.

Accounting for drops and throwaways, Arnold’s adjusted completion percentage was 83.3% on the evening and finished with an NFL passer rating of 121.8. A strong start to the season for the former five-star quarterback.

Second Star: Deion Burks, WR

Deion Burks was as advertised in the Sooners’ win, catching three touchdowns in the first half, which is the most ever by a player in their Oklahoma debut.

As was the case for the offense, the Sooners didn’t unveil all of the ways in which they’ll utilize Burks, but he was efficient and effective on his targets. He had six catches on seven targets for 36 yards and three touchdowns. He also took three sweeps for 14 yards, showing off his speed.

Burks displayed really good route running, creating separation in the red zone for his scores.

With the wide receiver depth chart taking a hit due to Farooq’s injury, the Sooners will need Burks to have a big season and he’s off to a great start.

5 Oklahoma freshmen we look forward to watching vs. UTEP

With the Sooners set to take on the UTEP Miners, here are five freshmen we’re looking forward to seeing on Saturday.

Brent Venables and his coaching staff did a tremendous job finishing the 2022 cycle with the No. 8 recruiting class. There’s a lot of talent in this group. Notably 15 true freshmen cracked the game one depth chart released earlier this week.

Those freshmen came right in and got to work. The mid-year enrollees spent the winter and spring reshaping their bodies and learning the ins and outs of the playbooks.

With so many true freshmen on the depth chart and a game against an opponent that Oklahoma should beat comfortably, we could see quite a few of these freshmen getting game action this weekend. We took the liberty of tossing out the five freshmen to we’re looking forward to watching.

Oklahoma Sooners receive predictions for Clemson de-commit, 2023 tight end Reid Mikeska

The Oklahoma Sooners received several predictions on Thursday for four-star tight end Reid Mikeska who recently de-comitted from Clemson.

The Oklahoma Sooners are currently without a tight end commit in their 2023 recruiting class. That could be changing as the Sooners received several predictions in favor of landing 2023 tight end Reid Mikeska out of Cypress, Texas.

The Sooners lost Luke Hasz to Arkansas in the wake of the coaching change last winter, but it seems like they found the guy to fill the void in Mikeska.

Mikeska, a four-star according to Rivals, recently de-committed from the Clemson Tigers after receiving an Oklahoma offer from tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley on May 5.

According to Anna Hickey, who covers Clemson recruiting for 247Sports, Mikeska is expected to take a trip to Norman this weekend to visit with the Oklahoma Sooners. In the wake of this new information, SoonerScoop.com‘s Josh McCuistion and OUInsider’s Parker Thune each submitted predictions in favor of the Oklahoma Sooners. Rivals National Recruiting Analyst Nick Harris also flipped Mikeska from Clemson to OU.

It’s an interesting turn of events for a player that looked to be heading to the Tigers a day ago and now seems to be pivoting to Oklahoma. If the trend continues and Mikeska ends up a Sooner, it will be the second former Clemson commit that has landed with the Sooners since January.

Jaran Kanak, who was committed to Clemson prior to Oklahoma’s hiring of Brent Venables de-committed and signed to play with the Sooners.
