Former LSU basketball guard Janae Kent commits to SEC rival

LSU hasn’t seen the last of Janae Kent.

LSU hasn’t seen the last of former women’s basketball guard [autotag]Janae Kent[/autotag].

On Sunday, the rising sophomore announced that she will be transferring to SEC rival Texas A&M, meaning the Tigers will face her head-to-head next season.

A top-100 recruit coming out of high school in Oak Forest, Illinois, Kent appeared in 32 games this season as a true freshman, mostly in a rotational capacity.

Her one start came in place of an injured [autotag]Mikaylah Williams[/autotag] in the SEC championship against South Carolina, in which she scored three points. She scored a season-high seven points in two games against Queens and Texas Southern.

Kent joins an Aggies team that is coming off its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2021. As a No. 11 seed, Texas A&M lost its opening-round matchup against No. 6-seeded Nebraska.

Texas A&M HC Joni Tayor lands former LSU guard through the transfer portal

Coach Joni Talyor lands her first transfer for the 2025 season with former LSU guard Janae Kent

The transfer portal is alive and well for college basketball and thousands of players are looking for new opportunities. Texas A&M head coach Joni Taylor has seen her share of players enter the portal and was dealt a blow when her top scoring threat for next season, Janiah Baker, along with four other Aggies, entered the portal.

Needing to bring in some experience she is in the market to find a few replacements and she was able to get her first commit in former LSU guard Janae Kent. It was reported by Talia Goodman on April 12 that Kent intended to transfer following Hailey Van Lith and Angelica Velez out of the door.

Kent is a former top-100 player out of high school and saw action in all 32 games last season. While she does need some development, only averaging 8 minutes a game, getting experience playing under a championship-winning coach and practicing against WNBA-caliber players every day should pay dividends.

LSU women’s basketball routs East Texas Baptist in exhibition to kick off 2023-24 season

The Tigers kicked off their title defense with a 99-26 win over Division III East Texas Baptist.

Preseason No. 1 LSU women’s basketball began its national title defense on Thursday night with the first of two exhibition games, and East Texas Baptist was no match.

LSU easily dispatched its Division III opponent, winning 99-26 in a game that spotlighted practically the entire roster.

The starting lineup featured all newcomers with transfers [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag] and [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag] as well as true freshmen [autotag]Mikaylah Williams[/autotag], [autotag]Janae Kent[/autotag] and [autotag]Aalyah Del Rosario[/autotag].

All made their share of plays, with Williams, Kent and Morrow totaling 10 points. The former two also neared double-doubles with nine and eight rebounds, respectively. Van Lith nearly scored in double figures in her LSU debut, as well, finishing with nine points.

Despite coming off the bench, it was the returning players that would star in this one.

[autotag]Flau’Jae Johnson[/autotag] led the team with 18 points, while [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] scored 17 while adding seven rebounds. [autotag]Sa’Myah Smith[/autotag] registered the team’s only double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

LSU’s defense smothered ETBU, forcing 39 turnovers that resulted in 32 points for the Tigers. They also won the rebounding battle 51-34.

While the dominating win was a nice way to kick things off, a Division III opponent is far from a real test for a team that enters the year as the favorite to repeat as national champions.

LSU will kick off its regular season against a ranked Colorado team on Nov. 6, but in the meantime, it will have one more exhibition against Loyola (New Orleans) next Thursday night.
