Former Kentucky basketball target Jamie Vinson commits to Texas

Recruit Jamie Vinson was contacted by Kentucky basketball, but has committed to Texas.

Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope has been working hard on recruiting for the 2025 class. However, he has also has a spot to fill on next season’s roster, and had been in contact with 2024 recruit Jamie Vinson. On Monday, Vinson chose to commit to the Texas Longhorns.

Vinson, a 6’11”, 210 lb center from Austin, Texas is a three-star prospect in the 2024 class. He’s ranked as the 239th player by 247sports, and had originally committed to Vanderbilt. He backed out of that after the Commodores had a coaching change.

Kentucky brought Vinson in for a visit in May, likely seeing him as a developmental frontcourt player who could be a long-term player. Vinson may have wanted a clearer path to playing time, or playing closer to home might have appealed to him. Either way, he’ll play for Texas next year.

On the other side, the Wildcats still have one open roster spot to fill. There are still transfer options, as well as other recruits who could wind up filling the spot. Big Blue Nation will have to wait a little longer to see who takes it.

Rutgers basketball hosted class of 2024 center this weekend

Jamie Vinson visits Rutgers basketball over the weekend.

Rutgers basketball hosted a priority recruit over the weekend in Jamie Vinson.

A class of 2024 recruit, Vinson had committed to Vanderbilt last fall but has since re-opened his recruitment. He visited Rutgers over this past weekend and is scheduled to be at Kentucky this week.

A 6-foot-10 center from Austin, Texas Vinson has plenty of potential. ESPN ranks him as a three-star and the No. 36 center in the nation and Rivals has him at No. 26. He has offers that include Cal, George Mason, Ole Miss and Texas Tech in addition to Kentucky and Rutgers.

With some position versatility, Vinson is athletic and quick enough to play at power forward and potentially chip in immediately at center as well.

Rutgers currently has one of the top recruiting classes and is ranked top-10 nationall. The 2024 class is headlined by five-star forward [autotag]Ace Bailey[/autotag] (the No. 1 player in the nation according to USA TODAY High School Sports) and five-star guard [autotag]Dylan Harper[/autotag] (Co-MVP of the McDonald’s All-American Game).

Adding a potential piece like Vinson, who is a strong defender with a nuanced offensive game, would give head coach Steve Pikiell an impressive core.

Kentucky basketball is hosting 2024 recruit Jamie Vinson next week

Three-star recruit Jamie Vinson is set to visit Kentucky basketball on Monday.

The 2024-25 Kentucky basketball roster is almost complete, with just a couple of spots remaining. While they’re reserving one spot for a possible elite scorer, that would leave another spot unclaimed. Coach Mark Pope might be using that spot for another 2024 recruit in Jamie Vinson.

Vinson is a three-star player in this year’s class. The 6’11” center from Texas previously committed to Vanderbilt, but changed his mind last month, re-opening his recruitment.

According to On3’s Jamie Shaw, Vinson completed a visit with South Carolina and plans to visit Rutgers over the weekend. He’ll visit Kentucky on Monday.

Vinson had offers from teams like Cal and Ole Miss before he chose Vanderbilt, and they will likely still be in the mix. Kentucky, meanwhile, would be happy to add another frontcourt prospect. Other than Brandon Garrison, they don’t have anyone who could return after this season.

Fans will wait and see what happens with Vinson and the scorers that the Wildcats are hoping to bring in. Whether they land a 2024 recruit, or fill the final spots with more transfers, there’s little doubt that Mark Pope is still working hard to assemble a competitive team.
