Jaime Jaquez Jr. seems to be glad the Lakers didn’t draft him

Lakers fans wish the team would’ve drafted Jaime Jaquez Jr. instead of Jalen Hood-Schifino, but the Heat wing is glad L.A. didn’t take him.

The struggling Los Angeles Lakers will play their first game of 2024 on Wednesday when they host the Miami Heat. It will start a stretch of 11 games at Crypto.com Arena in the team’s next 12 contests.

The Heat have a terrific rookie swingman named Jaime Jaquez Jr. who was taken one pick after the Lakers’ Jalen Hood-Schifino in April’s draft. Jaquez is averaging 13.7 points a game while shooting 50.6% from the field this season, and he has given the offensively challenged Heat a boost.

He’s a local product. He was born in Irvine and grew up in Camarillo less than an hour away from downtown Los Angeles, and he played four years of college basketball at the University of California, Los Angeles. That may make it seem as if it would’ve been best for both parties had the Lakers drafted him instead of Hood-Schifino, something many Lakers fans wish would’ve happened.

But Jaquez sounds like he’s actually glad he was drafted by a team in a different market.

Via South Florida Sun Sentinel:

“I wanted to get away,” he said. “I think, for myself, I thought it was important for me to be able to go out of my comfort zone and experience something new. I didn’t want to be a guy that said, ‘Oh, I just stayed in Southern California all my life.’

“I wanted to go live in a different, new place. And that’s why I was very excited to go to Miami. It was new. Everyone compares it, but I think it’s very, very different.”

The Heat are the defending Eastern Conference champions, but, as usual, many are counting them out. They’re fifth in the East with a 19-14 record, and their gritty, never-say-die attitude means they will be a handful for L.A. on Wednesday.

Could Boston land Jamie Jaquez Jr. with the No. 25 pick in Thursday’s draft?

Should the Celtics use the No. 25 pick to select UCLA’s Jamie Jaques Jr.?

Thanks to a surprising early offseason trade, the Boston Celtics own the No. 25 pick in Thursday’s NBA draft.

President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens could continue to explore other transactions, but Boston could very well end up selecting a young player to add to the team’s roster.

Though it was not the headline from the three-team trade sending Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies and Kristaps Porzingis to Boston, the Celtics also gained draft capital in the deal. Along with swapping the No. 35 pick for the No. 25 pick in the 2023 draft, Boston also landed a first-round selection in the 2024 draft.

Suddenly the Celtics have a decision to make. The pick could be on the move again, but if it’s not, who will Boston take?

One interesting name to consider is Jamie Jaquez Jr., a 6-foot-7 guard from UCLA. He averaged 17.8 points and 8.2 points in his senior season this past year and showed grit and determination on defense as well. There are a few things he’ll need to iron out as a pro, but he is an intriguing prospect for Boston if he’s still available in the late first round.

Even before Boston moved up in the draft, Jaquez Jr. was linked to Boston. The guys at the “How ’bout them Celtics” discussed the fit on a recent episode.
