Former Packers WR calls Ravens QB Lamar Jackson ‘average at best’ in the postseason

A NFL pundit ripping Lamar Jackson for his postseason performances? To quote George Harrison, “it’s been done.”

There is only one way to respond to pundits ripping Lamar Jackson for his postseason performances.

Cue the GIF of an animated version of George Harrison during his forever-relevant appearance on The Simpsons over 30 years ago. Harrison rolls down the window of his limo, sticks his head out at the action above him (Homer Simpson and his barbershop quartet performing on an outdoor roof), and says, “It’s been done.”

Harrison then rolls his window up and speeds off. It’s the perfect example of how to react to an utterly stale bit.

Former Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones is the latest in a long line of NFL pundits who have decided to recycle a routine that’s been overdone for some time.

“He’s average at best,” Jones said while appearing on the adequately title FS1 program Speak this week.

“Are we keeping it 100?

“Lamar Jackson is one of my favorite players. At best in the playoffs, he’s average… So he has to accept the criticism and go out here and make sure, ‘Hey man, y’all think I can’t do this? Watch this.’ He has to do that.

“But the criticism is absolutely fair, because he’s not the Lamar Jackson that we’re used to seeing in the playoffs versus the regular season.”

Jones, who won the 2011 Super Bowl with the Packers, currently works as an analyst for NFL Network.

The statistics back up some of Jones’ points. Jackson, as a starting quarterback, is 2-4 in the playoffs, versus 58-19 in the regular season.

His postseason passer rating is 75.7, which is quite a dropoff from his regular season mark of 98.0.

However, Jones’s calling extra attention to this phenomenon is pointless for reasons beyond its lack of originality. It’s only natural that most professional athletes, or teams for that matter, won’t do as well in the postseason as they do in the regular season.

The reason is painfully obvious—the level of competition they face. The further you advance in the playoffs, the more formidable your opposition.

And those opposing defenses are, and this should go without saying, a lot stronger than who you’ll face for the bulk of the regular season. A classic parallel is Michigan State men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo.

Maybe you’ve seen the T-shirts and memes: “January. February. Izzo.” Yes, the man nicknamed “Mr. March” has a career NCAA Tournament record of 56-24.

However, this mark includes a record of 3-7 on the final weekend of March Madness (which ironically takes place in April). So, while he’s 53-17 on the first two weekends of the tourney, which cover the first four rounds, he doesn’t perform as well in the final stages.

Again, because of the quality of the opposition. To reference another humorous GIF: “It’s not rocket surgery.”

Former teammate James Jones defends Aaron Rodgers missing minicamp: ‘ He’s been at everything’

James Jones defended Aaron Rodgers this week on FS1.

A recent trip may have caused Aaron Rodgers to miss minicamp. But a former teammate of the New York Jets quarterback believes it has no bearing on the season.

James Jones, who won Super Bowl XLV with Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers, came to the defense of Rodgers this week on FS1. Jones played nine years in the NFL (eight with the Packers) and this week, he defended the now-Jets quarterback for his recent trip to Egypt.

Rodgers created a stir in some corners for an unexcused absence that caused him to miss Jets minicamp.

Jones said “I ain’t worried about Aaron Rodgers missing two days when in two years he has been at everything, even when he’s hurt.”

In his commentary on FS1, Jones took the long road in defending Rodgers:

“I’m proud of my dude for taking some time to himself. Planning his trip to go to…Egypt. Because he’s been at everything. If I’ve been at everything for the last two years and I’m a four-time MVP, All-Pro…whatever you want to say. Super Bowl champion. I’m all that – listen I deserve to get two days since I’ve been here. Been the ultimate teammate when I’m hurt, when I’m not hurt. All of that – hey man, I messed up, however you want to all look at it. But I’m gone. I’m not tripping off Aaron Rodgers missing because I don’t think this is going to be a defining moment to where the Jets going to the Super Bowl because of this or the Jets winning five games because of this. It’s not going to be because he missed two days of practice.”

Earlier this week, Rodgers donated to help the victims of the Thompson Fire in Butte County (California).

Ex-NFL receiver on a former Tiger: ‘He still has juice’

A former NFL wide receiver, who spent the majority of his professional career playing with the Green Bay Packers and star quarterback Aaron Rodgers, believes a former Clemson wideout will be Rodgers’ go-to guy by the end of this season.

James Jones, the NFL’s receiving touchdowns leader in 2012 who won a Super Bowl with Green Bay two seasons prior, says former Tiger and current Packer Sammy Watkins will emerge as the No. 1 receiver for Rodgers as the season progresses.

Watkins reeled in three receptions for a game-high 93 yards during the Packers’ 27-10 win over the Chicago Bears on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” this past weekend, helping Green Bay put up points on three separate scoring drives.

“I’m gonna say Sammy Watkins (will be the go-to receiver). And the reason why I say Sammy Watkins is because Sammy Watkins, as you can see from (Sunday) night, he still has juice,” Jones said on Up and Adams with Kay Adams.

“He still can run routes, he still can make plays after the catch. I think it’s just a matter of time before him and Aaron Rodgers’ chemistry gets on the right page.”

Once that happens, Jones says, Watkins will see plenty of targets.

“When you see a lot of targets and have a lot of chances to make plays, you’re going to find yourself making some plays,” Jones said. “And I see Coach LaFleur (Packers head coach Matt LaFleur) finding ways – hey, he’s the No. 1 read on this play — finding ways to get him involved. But I think Sammy is that guy.”

Watkins, who signed a one-year deal with the Packers this past offseason, has recorded 354 receptions for 5,170 yards and 34 touchdowns over his NFL career (2014-22) with the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens and Packers since being selected by the Bills with the fourth overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

“He’s explosive, can run really good routes,” Jones said. “I think he’ll be the No. 1 receiver for the Packers when this thing is all said and done.”

James Jones on Deandre Ayton: ‘The contract stuff is behind us’

You guys matched Indiana’s offer sheet for Deandre Ayton (four years, $133M). Is there peace and love all over the world now that he’s going to be with you? James Jones: Yeah. That part is behind us. The contract stuff is behind us, and our focus now is how do we help him improve and continue to improve. We have ideas and plans to do that. It’s on me and the staff to figure out how to help him in conjunction with our other guys. Continue to realize their capacity. Their potential. He’s good. He’s in great shape. He’s really been in the gym working on what I’d say are ‘second-level things’ and I know he’s excited to prove that he’s better than he was last year.”

It’s always a great topic of discussion, but the one thing people forget is that when you’re talking about trades, or any player acquisition, the team that has the player has to be willing to move the player.”

What conversations have you had with …

What conversations have you had with Monty since you’ve taken the job? Morgan Cato: He’s just really, really excited. So, I took one quick trip to Phoenix, one-day trip. And I met with the guys after practice and came in. James said, ‘Show up downtown.’ I’m like, ‘OK, this is me in my corporate space. What’s the agenda? What are we doing?’ And he’s like, ‘Morgan, come by at 10.’ I’m like, ‘All right, just going to show up. …’ And right after they finished practice and Monty’s downstairs with the guys. And this is when I knew this is going to be a good environment. Because they just finished practice, everyone’s sitting around like it’s a barbecue. They’re in the weight room, talking, laughing — coaches, players, etc. And they’re just there.

Ryan Resch, 29, works in basketball …

Ryan Resch, 29, works in basketball operations for the Suns, where he serves as vice president of strategy and evaluation for the Suns and essentially functions as the front office’s chief-of-staff. He attends to the big-picture responsibilities of team-building and runs staff-wide meetings alongside general manager James Jones, who has been a mentor to him. This past winter, Resch came out to Jones, then the rest of the Suns’ staff. He is the first openly gay person in league history to work basketball operations in an NBA front office.

How did you first come out to the Suns? …

How did you first come out to the Suns? Ryan Resch: My thought was, ‘If I’m gonna do this, then I’m going to do it the right way,’ and I wasn’t going to hide behind it any longer. I told [Phoenix general manager] James [Jones] in my office randomly one day, after practice. We were playing Miami at home and I wanted to bring somebody I was seeing at the time to the game and have him sit with me in our executive suite. And I obviously can’t do that unless you tell the other executives whom you’re bringing. In true James fashion — he has been referred to as the best teammate of all time by several of his former teammates — it was amongst the most nondescript conversations we’ve ever had. By that, I mean there was a beauty in how uneventful it was, because he was just so accepting and so generous and kind about it from the jump.
