Confident weight issue behind him, Bellator 249’s Leandro Higo sends message to James Gallagher

Leandro Higo says he’s sick of chasing James Gallagher.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – [autotag]Leandro Higo[/autotag] entered Bellator 249 on a mission to show he’s turned a career corner.

Thursday, he submitted Ricky Bandejas via rear-naked choke in Round 2 to top off a dominant performance. After the fight, Higo (20-5 MMA, 3-3 BMMA) discussed what he’s calling a successful start to his “alter ego.”

“I told you in the (pre-fight) interview this week – alter ego,” Higo said. “I’m happy for this good performance tonight. … I came in as a prospect. I fought the best. I had a big promise when I came in – that was to become a world champion. This division is on fire. Put me in the fire against anybody.”

If there was a blemish on Higo’s performance Thursday, it was his weight miss on the scales Wednesday. Higo came in three pounds over the bantamweight limit, which he attributes to his travel delays in getting to the fight.

“There were a couple of complications in the weight cut, which has to have perfection,” Higo said. “I was in the airport for about three days. So to come here and go into quarantine, there were some mistakes that were made that won’t be made again. That’s what happened. There were some obstacles that I had to overcome. It wasn’t ideal. For a big weight cut, I need an ideal situation. It’s not going to happen again. We’ll correct these mistakes and be ready for the next one.”

Higo doesn’t think a title shot is out of the question, but if he fights again before he gets one, there’s a name that interests him. The rivalry between his team, Pitbull Brothers, and Team SBG Ireland was building prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. With fights back and travel bans slowly being eased, Higo is interested in a fight against SBG Dublin’s [autotag]James Gallagher[/autotag].

“I’ve been chasing this mother(expletive) ever since he’s coming into Bellator. If he’s really good at jiu-jitsu, you’ve seen my jiu-jitsu skills in my last two fights. Let’s go, James Gallagher.”

Bellator 249 took place Thursday at Mohegan Sun Arena. The main card aired on CBS Sports Network after prelims on CBSsports.com.

Cal Ellenor plans to finish James Gallagher at Bellator Europe 9: ‘I’m coming in there to put him away’

More than a year since their original fight booking, Cal Ellenor says he’s ready to deliver against James Gallagher in the main event of Bellator Europe 9.

[autotag]Cal Ellenor[/autotag] has had plenty of time to think about facing [autotag]James Gallagher[/autotag] and now, more than a year since their original fight booking, the Englishman is ready to step into the Bellator cage and throw hands with “The Strabanimal.”

Ellenor (8-2 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) will take on Gallagher (10-1 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) in the main event of Bellator Europe 9 Saturday in Milan, Italy with the pair finally set to face off at the fourth time of asking after their first three bookings were scuppered.

Issues with Ellenor’s medical paperwork forced him out of their originally scheduled date in Dublin last September at Bellator Europe 4, then an injury to Gallagher nixed their rearranged matchup at Bellator 240 in February. Their matchup was pushed back to May in London as a result, but the arrival of the global COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of that event as the sporting world went into lockdown.

Now, with Bellator back up and running again, Ellenor and Gallagher have been booked once again and now, after both men made weight with no issues, they are finally set to face off inside the Bellator cage.

Chatting to MMA Junkie ahead of the long-awaited bout, Ellenor said he has seen enough of Gallagher over the last year to ensure he’s fully prepared for the matchup, and stated that he has reinvented his own fighting style ahead of the bout.

“Obviously people learn new things. It’s been a while since I’ve seen him fight, so he might bring some new tricks to the table, but I’m not even worried about that,” he said. “I’ve seen what he’s good at and what holes he has in his game, and I’m just focusing on me.

“I feel like my game has evolved so much since people last saw me. I have a completely different style and a whole new arsenal of tricks to show off on fight night, and I can’t wait to get in there and show people the new invention of myself. I want to show people what I’m all about and I can’t wait to do it.”

[lawrence-related id=552534,466099,465644]

The matchup features two fighters who both love to start fast and push the pace on their opponent. But Ellenor said the key difference between them is how they react to pushback from their opponents.

“When things don’t go his way, he can’t handle it. That’s the type of fighter he is,” he said. “If he’s not putting people away he starts to panic, and that’s how I see it going. I see him coming out strong and aggressive, like he does, and then I just feel like I’m going to wear him down, then I’m going to stop him. I don’t know if it’ll be via striking or submission, but that’s how I see it going.”

Gallagher’s Bellator fights have often seen him competing in front of a raucous Irish crowd inside Dublin’s 3Arena, but Saturday’s matchup in Milan will play out in a virtually empty arena due to COVID-19 restrictions. Ellenor said he’s experienced similar environments before in his career, but pondered whether his opponent may not have the same edge without the backing of 9,000 screaming Irish fans in the stands.

“The temperature’s going to be a lot cooler in the venue, and the atmosphere’s going to be different,” he said. “But I fought for (Russian promotion) ACB before in Manchester, when I was the first fight on the card and it was a virtually empty arena, so I’ve already experienced it. Once that cage door shuts, though, it’s no different for me. It might be different for James, as I know he likes to feed off the crowd. But, for me, I’m not arsed. I just get in there and fight.”

It’s been a long wait for Ellenor, who hasn’t competed since his Bellator debut back in February 2019 when he defeated Nathan Greyson via first-round submission at Bellator Europe 1 in Newcastle, England. Issues with inconsistent medical paperwork, plus family tragedies, have meant that Ellenor has been fighting in different ways, while his fighting career has been on an unplanned hiatus.

But now the Sunderland man, who has finished all eight of his opponents inside the distance, said he’s come through a tough period in his life and he can’t wait to show the world his fighting style and get his career back on track once again.

“It’s going to be special – that’s the thing I’m most looking forward to,” he said. “I’m just looking forward to getting let off the leash and competing again. After all that’s happened in my life, it’s good to finally be back and have the chance to progress my career. I’m really excited and looking forward to continuing my story.

“The fans will see a flashy, stylish, scrappy fighter. I’m coming in there and I’m not looking for a decision win, I’m coming in there to put him away.”

Bellator Europe 9 takes place Saturday at the Allianz Cloud in Milan, Italy. The event streams live on MMA Junkie and the Bellator YouTube channel.

Bellator Europe 9: Bantamweight rivals James Gallagher, Cal Ellenor booked for a fourth time

Bellator bantamweights James Gallagher and Cal Ellenor have been booked to face off at Bellator Europe 9 in the promotion’s fourth attempt to match the pair.

Bellator’s European team are crossing their fingers that the fourth time will be the charm after announcing that Irish bantamweight contender [autotag]James Gallagher[/autotag] has once again been booked to face England’s [autotag]Cal Ellenor[/autotag].

After three prior attempts to book the pair fell by the wayside, the two bantamweights have now been matched to face off in the main event of Bellator Europe 9, which takes place Oct. 3 at the Allianz Cloud, Milan, Italy.

Gallagher’s (10-1 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) last outing saw him claim a quickfire submission victory over late replacement Roman Salazar in the main event of Bellator Europe 4 last September after Ellenor (8-2 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) was forced off the card due to issues with his medical documentation.

A back injury to Gallagher nixed the duo’s second booking, which was set to take place at Bellator Europe 7 on Feb. 22. Then a third attempt to match the pair also fell through as Bellator’s planned March 16 event in London was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now the pair are finally set to meet, with Bellator’s matchmakers booking the two European 135-pounders in the main event of the promotion’s third Milan event in the space of eight days.

Ellenor has been on the shelf ever since his first-round submission of Nathan Greyson on his promotional debut back in February 2019. All eight of his career wins have come via stoppage.

Also confirmed for the Oct. 3 card is a middleweight bout between Ireland’s Charlie Ward and England-based Estonian Andy Manzolo.

Confirmed bouts for Bellator Europe 9 include:

  • James Gallagher vs. Cal Ellenor
  • Andy Manzolo vs. Charlie Ward

Sergio Pettis chirps James Gallagher after Bellator 242 win: ‘That’s how you do it’

Sergio Pettis believes he sent a message to James Gallagher with his performance in the Bellator 242 main event.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – [autotag]Sergio Pettis[/autotag] believes he sent a message to [autotag]James Gallagher[/autotag] with his performance in the Bellator 242 main event.

Pettis (20-5 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) stayed unbeaten to start his Bellator career on Friday when he outpointed Ricky Bandejas (13-4 MMA, 3-3 BMMA) over three rounds to win a unanimous decision at Mohegan Sun Arena. The fight was touted as a title eliminator in the bantamweight division.

Bandejas is, of course, the only person to have beaten Gallagher (10-1 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) in MMA, handing he brash Irishman a highlight-reel knockout at Bellator 204 in August 2018. Pettis said he wasn’t going to fall victim to the same outcome, even if it wasn’t the most thrilling contest.

“I don’t know if it was a statement for a title shot,” Pettis told reporters, including MMA Junkie, post-fight at Bellator 242. “I think it was just another good win on my resume. I beat a tough Ricky Bandejas. I showed Gallagher that’s how you do it, though. That’s how you defend yourself. Those punches and those kicks, if you learn defense, you can block that (expletive).”

[lawrence-related id=538245]

Pettis said his verbal jab at Gallagher doesn’t mean he’s looking for that fight immediately. He believes the criticism toward Gallagher’s level of competition throughout his career is warranted, and pointed to the loss against Bandejas as evidence of what happens when he fights a legitimate talent.

It appears Pettis is trending toward a title shot against the winner of Juan Archuleta and Patrick Mix, who are expected to fight for the vacant 135-pound title this year. If Gallagher wins a few fights in the meantime, though, Pettis said he’d welcome it.

“He’s got to work his way up to get me,” Pettis said. “He’s got a couple more wins under his belt and beat some notable guys. If he can beat Ricky Bandejas then he deserves to fight me, no matter how many followers you got on Instagram.”

Pettis largely had his way with Bandejas over the course of their three-round fight. He used superior striking to win every round on all three scorecards, but it wasn’t entirely satisfying. Pettis has earned 10 of his past 11 wins by decision, and said it’s a goal to start putting opponents away more consistently.

“I’m critical of my own performance,” Pettis said. “Obviously I want to start finishing people more and more. Ricky was tough, man, so I had to play a smarter game plan and I went out there and did what I had to do, but there’s more to come.”

Bellator’s Cal Ellenor doesn’t care if James Gallagher isn’t next – he just wants to fight

After seeing his fight with James Gallagher scrapped for a third time, Cal Ellenor says he just wants to fight, regardless of the opponent.

The [autotag]Cal Ellenor[/autotag] vs. [autotag]James Gallagher[/autotag] matchup has been scrapped yet again.

The pair first was matched this past September in the Bellator Dublin main event, but Ellenor was forced off the card due to medical clearance issues. They were rebooked to fight in February in another Dublin headliner, but it was Gallagher who was forced out due to injury.

Finally, they were matched up for the main event of the upcoming Bellator London card on May 16. But, due to the coronavirus outbreak, the next three Bellator events have been suspended indefinitely.

It means it’s been over a year since Ellenor (8-2 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) last fought, when he submitted Nathan Greyson in the first round at Bellator Europe 1 in Newcastle. Now he’s just eager to get back in there, regardless of the opponent.

“Obviously, it’s a good fight to make for where the division’s at now and stuff like that,” Ellenor told MMA Junkie. “I feel like it’s a good stylistic fight, as well. Obviously, it’s been built up now but at the same time, it’s been that long in the making now, it’s just like, I’m not bothered if I fight James or not. I just want to fight somebody. So if it is James, and it comes back around, I do think the fight will eventually happen one day but if it’s our next fight then cool. If not, then it is what it is.”

Throughout the cancellations, the pre-fight trash talk continued to build up, and the two engaged in a heated face-off and had to be separated when Gallagher confronted Ellenor at the Bellator showcase event in New York last month.

But Ellenor isn’t worried about the matchup potentially falling through again. He’s confident that they will fight regardless, at some point in their careers.

“I feel like we’re going to meet on the same path anyway, so I just want to fight,” Ellenor said. “If they say James is next, I’ll sign again as I have every other time and, if not, whoever it is next, I’ll fight anyway. I just want to get busy and get back to being active.”
