Mitch Kupchak, Hornets release statement regarding Borrego’s dismissal

Kupchak says the team will start their search for a new head coach immediately.

On Friday, the Charlotte Hornets relieved head coach James Borrego of his duties, ending his four-year term as the team’s head coach.

Behalf of the Hornets, President of Basketball Operations & General Manager Mitch Kupchak put out a statement announcing the change.

“I want to thank JB for his hard work and commitment during these past four seasons,” said Kupchak. “Beyond his work as a coach, he is a tremendous person. I wish him and his family the best in the future. These decisions are always difficult. Having said that, we have a talented, young core of players which has me very excited about the future of the Hornets. We will begin the search for our new head coach immediately.

In four years as head coach, Borrego held a 138-163 record, including 10-win improvements in each of the last three seasons and two-straight trips to the Play-In tournament.

Report: Hornets to dismiss James Borrego after four seasons

After four seasons, Borrego’s term as the head coach in Charlotte comes to an end.

Next season, LaMelo Ball and the Charlotte Hornets will have a new leader on the sidelines.

First reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Charlotte is set to fire James Borrego after four seasons as the Hornets head coach.

As Wojnarowski noted, Borrego and the Hornets improved their win total by 10 each of the past three seasons, including making the Play-In tournament the past two seasons. Yet, that didn’t seem to be enough for Michael Jordan and Mitch Kupchak, despite giving Borrego a contract extension in August.

Over the last two seasons, the Hornets dealt with lengthy injuries to Gordon Hayward along with the inability to close games on the defensive end of the floor for a young team.

The Hornets now join the Lakers and Kings as the current head coaching vacancies across the league.

Plenty of decisions have to be made, …

Plenty of decisions have to be made, including whether to re-sign Harrell. “We are just going to look at the roster as a whole and see where we can get better and how we’re going to improve,” coach James Borrego said. “There’s question marks that we’ve got to answer along the way and I just don’t have those answers right now. But for us, we’ll dig into those questions, we’ll answer those questions and we’ll make the appropriate adjustments.”
