Wisconsin transfer defensive lineman to exit portal, return to the Badgers

Wisconsin transfer defensive lineman to exit portal, return to the Badgers

Wisconsin transfer defensive lineman Jamel Howard is withdrawing his name from the transfer portal and will return to the Badgers, according to 247Sports’ Chris Hummer.

Howard is the second Wisconsin scholarship player to do so, joining wide receiver Trech Kekahuna. His return drops the number of Wisconsin transfer departures to 23 players (that including Xavier Lucas, who technically never entered the portal).

Howard rejoins Wisconsin with three years of eligibility remaining. He  signed with the program as a three-star recruit in the class of 2023. He was the No. 1,213 player in the class, No. 130 defensive lineman and No. 26 recruit from Illinois. He was one of the several Paul Chryst commits (June 2022) to recommit to the class after Luke Fickell’s hire.

His return is significant news for a defensive line that underwent significant transfer movement this offseason. James Thompson Jr. and Curt Neal transferred to Illinois. The room added experienced transfers Parker Petersen (Tulane), Corey Walker (Western Michigan), Charles Perkins (UT-Martin) and Jay’Viar Suggs (LSU).

Howard slots in as a depth option in the room with a chance to win significant snaps after those veteran transfers graduate. He did not see the field on defense during his first two years with the program.

His return is also big news for Luke Fickell’s class of 2023, which faced having 12 of its 15 signees depart via the portal. Howard’s and Kekahuna’s return drop that number to 10. Those two are among five players that remain, joined by linebackers Christian Alliegro and Tyler Jansey and tight end Tucker Ashcraft.

Wisconsin defensive lineman enters NCAA transfer portal

Another member of Wisconsin’s class of 2023 enters the transfer portal

Wisconsin redshirt freshman defensive lineman Jamel Howard Jr. entered the transfer portal on Saturday.

The second-year tackle is the 22nd Wisconsin scholarship player to enter since the portal opened on Dec. 9. He is the 11th member of Luke Fickell’s class of 2023 to depart. Only four players from that class remain with the program: wide receiver Trech Kekahuna, tight end Tucker Ashcraft, linebacker Tyler Jansey and LB Christian Alliegro.

“After meaningful talks with my family and staff, I’m grateful to the University of Wisconsin for helping me grow as a player and person,” Howard wrote on X. “With that, I’m entering the transfer portal with three years of eligibility.”

Howard joined the Badgers as a three-star recruit, ranked as the No. 1,213 player in the class of 2023, No. 130 defensive lineman and No. 26 recruit from his home state of Illinois. He committed to the program in June 2022 when Paul Chryst was the coach. He decommitted after Chryst’s firing before recommitting after Luke Fickell’s hire.

The lineman did not see any game action in his two years with the program.

Howard’s departure reflects larger movement within Wisconsin’s defensive line room. Veterans Curt Neal and James Thompson Jr. transferred out, while the program added commitments from transfers Parker Petersen, Corey Walker, Charles Perkins and Michael Garner.

That infusion of veteran talent at the position would have made it challenging for Howard to see snaps in 2025. He transfers with three years of eligibility remaining.

LSU offers three-star defensive lineman from Chicago

The Tigers have lost a couple defensive linemen in the 2023 class recently, and Jamel Howard could be a target to replace them.

[autotag]Jamel Howard[/autotag] is a 2023 6-foot-3, 320-pound, three-star, defensive lineman from Chicago where he plays for Marist High School. The RedHawks finished the 2022 season 7-4 with a loss to York in the second round of the playoffs. Howard is currently crystal-balled to Michigan and Wisconsin.

Film Analysis: Howard is a bully at defensive tackle for the RedHawks. He dominates the trenches and disposes of almost every guard that tries to stop him. He would fit in perfectly in LSU’s defense as he would demand a double-team against the running game. With the Tigers losing two defensive linemen commits recently, they could use some more depth.
