UFC on ESPN 54 Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay: Program total passes $24.5 million

UFC on ESPN 54 fighters took home UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay, a program that continued after the UFC’s deal with Venum.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Fighters from Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 54 event took home UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay totaling $173,000.

The program, a comprehensive plan that includes outfitting requirements, media obligations and other items under the fighter code of conduct, replaces the previous payments made under the UFC Athlete Outfitting Policy.

UFC on ESPN 54 took place at Boardwalk Hall. The main card aired on ESPN following prelims on ESPN2 and ESPN+.

Under the UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance program’s payout tiers, which appropriate the money generated by Venum’s multi-year sponsorship with the UFC, fighters are paid based on their total number of UFC bouts, as well as Zuffa-era WEC fights (January 2007 and later) and Zuffa-era Strikeforce bouts (April 2011 and later). Fighters with 1-3 bouts receive $4,000 per appearance; 4-5 bouts get $4,540; 6-10 bouts get $6,000; 11-15 bouts earn $11,000; 16-20 bouts pocket $16,000; and 21 bouts and more get $21,000. Additionally, champions earn $54,000 while title challengers get $54,000.

In addition to experience-based pay, UFC fighters will receive in perpetuity royalty payments amounting to 20-54 percent of any UFC merchandise sold that bears their likeness, according to officials.

In the main event, Erin Blanchfield (12-2 MMA, 6-1 UFC) took on Manon Fiorot (12-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC) in a likely women’s flyweight title eliminator. Joaquin Buckley (18-6 MMA, 8-4 UFC) took on Vicente Luque (22-10-1 MMA, 15-6 UFC) in the welterweight co-feature, and former middleweight champion Chris Weidman (16-7 MMA, 11-7 UFC) returned against Bruno Silva (23-11 MMA, 4-5 UFC).

UFC on ESPN 54 official weigh-in results: Fighter somehow gains weight between attempts, misses mark

The UFC on ESPN 54 weigh-ins ended oddly as Julio Arce somehow gained 0.25 pounds between attempts and his team was scratching their heads.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Ahead of Saturday’s fights at Boardwalk Hall, the 28 fighters involved in UFC on ESPN 54 hit the scales at the host hotel. One missed weight.

Atop the event, which airs on ESPN/ESPN+, is a pivotal women’s flyweight main event between top contenders [autotag]Erin Blanchfield[/autotag] (12-1 MMA, 6-0 UFC) and [autotag]Manon Fiorot[/autotag] (11-1 MMA, 6-0 UFC).

In the co-main event, welterweight standouts [autotag]Vicente Luque[/autotag] (22-9-1 MMA, 15-5 UFC) and [autotag]Joaquin Buckley[/autotag] (17-6 MMA, 7-4 UFC) collide. Also on the card, former UFC middleweight champion [autotag]Chris Weidman[/autotag] (15-7 MMA, 11-7 UFC) attempts to reenter the win column against [autotag]Bruno Silva[/autotag] (23-10 MMA, 4-4 UFC).

All of those fighters made weight, but one from the prelims. [autotag]Julio Arce[/autotag] missed the featherweight limit after previously missing at bantamweight in April 2022. He was given two attempts and gained 0.25 pounds between attempts.

Arce’s re-weigh was the last weigh-in of the day. A different New Jersey State Athletic Commission (NJSAC) representative than who weighed in the other 27 fighters and Arce’s first attempt, weighed in Arce the second time. This caused further frustration and disbelief from Arce’s team, who said they had weighed 146 on their own scale. Arce was fined 20 percent of his purse and the fight will continue as scheduled.

Jamall Emmers: Nate Landwehr being ‘the opposite of me’ will make for exciting UFC on ESPN 54 fight

Jamall Emmers thinks opposites will attract when he clashes with Nate Landwehr on Saturday at UFC on ESPN 54.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – [autotag]Jamall Emmers[/autotag] thinks opposites will attract when he clashes with Nate Landwehr on Saturday at UFC on ESPN 54.

Emmers (20-7 MMA, 3-3 UFC) is set to take on one of the featherweight division’s most entertaining fighters in Landwehr (17-5 MMA, 4-3 UFC) in a main-card matchup at Boardwalk Hall (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN+), and he thinks it has the ingredients for fireworks.

“This is a guy that I need on my record,” Emmers told MMA Junkie at Wednesday’s media day. “I need to get this W to further my career. Tough, exciting fighter and a fan favorite. I need one of these guys to push myself forward. This is what I’m here for. To entertain and put on exciting fights. He’s going to be a great dance partner for me to put on an exciting fight. I’m excited about the fight, just like the fans are.”

Emmers, 34, has experienced mixed success so far in his UFC career. He has alternated wins and losses over his six-fight tenure with the promotion, but after scoring a 49-second knockout of Dennis Buzukja in his most recent bout at UFC 295 in November, he hopes this is the start of a streak.

He knows it won’t be easy against Landwehr, 35, but anticipates the style matchup will give him plenty of opportunities to find the win.

“He’s a tough guy – I’ve seen him get dropped and come back,” Emmers said. “I’ve just got to be smart about it. I know he gets hit and wakes up, so I’ve got to pick my shots and be smart with how I’m going to finish him. He’s like the opposite of me. He’s a wild guy. Very animated. I think that’s just going to make a good fight, two opposites going at it.”

Nate Landwehr happy with UFC on ESPN 54 switch from Pat Sabatini to Jamall Emmers: ‘It’s better for the fans’

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – A curveball was thrown [autotag]Nate Landwehr[/autotag]’s way ahead of his return to the octagon, and he was more than OK with it.

The fan-favorite UFC featherweight was scheduled to make his return against Pat Sabatini at Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 54. However, about three weeks out from the event, Sabatini withdrew from the matchup and was replaced with [autotag]Jamall Emmers[/autotag] (20-7 MMA, 4-3 UFC). It’s a drastic change in challenges, but one that Landwehr (17-5 MMA, 3-3 UFC) welcomes.

“I feel like it’s better for the fans,” Landwehr said at the UFC on ESPN 54 media day on Wednesday. “I feel like the Pat Sabatini fight would’ve been less exciting. I think this is going to be a good, exciting fight for the fans to see.”

Landwehr thinks the Sabatini matchup lent itself to being a less action-packed bout than the one against Emmers, given the styles of both fighters.

“I just feel like Emmers is more of a, you know, he’s going to come forward, and we’re going to strike,” Landwehr said. “I think Pat would’ve been desperate for the takedown. It would’ve been a lot of wrestling. His game plan would have been to take me down and try to hold me there.

“I’m not saying Jamall Emmers is not going to try to take me down and hold me down, but the likelihood is that we’re going to see some great exchanges.”

Landwehr is coming off a June loss to Dan Ige. The defeat snapped a three-fight winning streak that had him pick up two Performance of the Night bonuses and one Fight of the Night – each worth $50,000.

The former M-1 champion hopes to get back in the win column and start angling at the top of the division once again.

“I would like to try to get back at a shot at the top 15, but everything right now it’s focused on Saturday night.”

UFC 295 medical suspensions: Jiri Prochazka, Sergei Pavlovich among 19 suspended indefinitely

Nineteen indefinite suspensions were handed out after UFC 295, per the New York State Athletic Commission.

UFC 295 took place Nov. 11 at Madison Square Garden in New York and featured 13 fights.

On Monday, MMA Junkie acquired a list of athlete medical suspensions from the New York State Athletic Commission, the sanctioning body that oversaw the event. Most injury specifics were not disclosed.

Nineteen of the 26 combatants were given indefinite suspensions and will need to be cleared by a doctor before they return. That’s a high number of indefinite suspensions compared to the average UFC event, although the NYSAC may have different safety protocols compared to other regulatory bodies. All 26 fighters were also given mandatory suspensions, which vary from seven days to 90 days.
