Former Auburn guard announces that he is transferrring to Chattanooga

Former Auburn guard and UAB transfer Jamal Johnson has committed to Chattanooga.

On Friday morning, basketball analyst Jeff Goodman reported that UAB guard and former Auburn Tiger Jamal Johnson is transferring to Chattanooga.

The native of Birmingham, Alabama has had several different stops along the course of his college career. Out of high school, Johnson was regarded as a three-star recruit by 247Sports. He held offers from schools like Alabama, Auburn, Memphis, Georgia, Arkansas, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech. Ultimately, he chose to play for Memphis and head coach Tubby Smith.

His time at Memphis didn’t last very long as he spent just one season in blue and white. In 34 games played, he averaged 4.4 points per game and 3.3 rebounds per game as a freshman at Memphis. In the offseason, he announced that he was transferring from the program. It didn’t take the Auburn coaching staff very long to go after Johnson. In two seasons at Auburn, he averaged 6.5 points per game and 1.9 rebounds per game. Over the course of two years, he made 13 starts.

Following the 2020-’21 season, he elected to transfer back home and play for UAB. In his lone season with the Blazers, Johnson averaged 4.4 points per game and one rebound per game. Now, he will be transferring to his fourth school (Chattanooga). Newly hired head coach Dan Earl will look to take the Mocs back to the NCAA Tournament for a second year in a row. With Johnson jumping on board, they will add an experienced guard that is an effective shooter from both the field and beyond the arc. In his career, Johnson shot 36.2% from the field and 35.9% from beyond the arc. It will definitely be interesting to see how the former Auburn guard performs on a Mocs team that is fresh off of a postseason appearance.

How Auburn’s basketball transfers performed this season with their new team

A look at how the former Auburn transfers performed with their new teams in the 2021-22 season.

The Auburn Tigers were not the same team by any means in 2020.

They were led by the likes of Sharife Cooper (Atlanta Hawks) and JT Thor (Charlotte Hornets). Those two played a huge role in any success that the Tigers had last season.

After the Tigers finished with an abysmal 13-14 record, several of the team’s players decided to transfer elsewhere. The four of them all had contributions this season to their respective teams.

The men’s basketball team received several contributions from players that transferred in as well. The new group of transfers are led by former North Carolina Tar Heel, Walker Kessler.

We are highlighting the impact that each of the four players has had at their transfer destinations since their departures from Auburn.

Jaylin Williams on Jamal Johnson’s play on Saturday: ‘He was really locked in’

Auburn’s Jamal Johnson put in a great effort at point guard for the Tigers in the upset victory over Tennessee on Saturday.

The biggest question facing Auburn on Saturday was who would be the main player responsible for handling the ball in the absence of Sharife Cooper. While that duty fell to Allen Flanigan on Tuesday night in the loss to Florida, it was Jamal Johnson who started at the point against the Vols.

His teammate Jaylin Williams knew he was ready to produce.

“He was really locked in,” Williams said of Johnson. “After Sharife (Cooper) got hurt in practice, I believe Jamal in his head said, ‘I’ve got to lock in. I’ve got to learn more at the 1. I’ve got to be more patient with the play calls.’ He can’t push the fastbreak too much, so he was very patient today.”

Flanigan was almost flawless in 31 minutes of play, putting up 14 points — a majority in the second half — and shooting 6-of-8 from the free throw line down the stretch while three assists and two steals to just one turnover.

Johnson’s impact on the game wasn’t lost on Bruce Pearl.

“That was the key to the game,” Pearl said. “He (Johnson) gets the game ball because of it. Again, putting him in that position let him set us up, and it let Al Flanigan be Al Flanigan and be a dominant player off the ball as a scorer. It paid off for us. That paid off for us. But obviously, Jamal played (great). He’s the oldest guy, he’s the smartest guy. It shows his versatility. When Jamal Johnson looks back at his career, I want him to remember this AUTLIVE game. I want him to remember this game. The fact that he was able to take the ball over, in an SEC game, and play point guard, a position he hadn’t played all year long virtually, and only have one turnover? Pretty impressive.”

Commentary and thoughts on what was Auburn vs Florida

Our writer Shea Brennaman has some thoughts and commentary on the game that was Auburn vs. Florida.

I react to the first half of Auburn vs Florida live here so that you all don’t have to.

*Halftime reflection: the first two minutes of this was fun, but it was all downhill from there.

First five minutes:

Sharife is out with an ankle injury but the Tigers showed promise early with a triple by Jamal Johnson. Mike White didn’t like what he saw with his Gator offense early so he called a timeout and then it all went downhill from there.

The theme:

We’ll turn the ball over anywhere and everywhere, even on inbounds plays.

Drama: BRUCE GOT A BENCH WARNING AND CAUGHT AN ATTITUDE WITH THE REF, LOVE THE PASSION COACH!

15:00-7:00

We haven’t scored in a really long time. Turnovers are leading to huge momentum getters for the Gators. Turning the ball over and getting dunked on/seeing an alley-oop slam is absolutely demoralizing to watch. Transition threes continue not to fall for Auburn, but they’re falling for Florida.

Tigers trail by 12, I’m beginning to question why I thought this would be a good idea. I’m also eating Flaming Hot Cheetos so that’s another decision I will regret later.

In other news baseball won 18-2.

Walk-on Lior Berman is now in the game, commentators are talking about Trendon Watford.

Ten turnovers now, 7:48 left in the first half. We are now on pace to finish with 40 turnovers. Down 27-10, time to play that Maroon 5 song about being in misery.

Final five minutes:

Florida has eight fouls compared to Auburn’s three…maybe we can get them in foul trouble. At this point I just want the boys to get it within 10 by halftime, is that too much to ask?

Non-related: The Lil’ Sweet Dr. Pepper commercials really freak me out and I miss Larry Culpepper. I also miss Sharife.

I blinked and we’re down 36-18, Auburn also just committed its 12th turnover. Tigers also picked up two fouls very recently. Sharife Cooper looks miserable on the sidelines right now and again, I miss him tremendously.

Scottie Lewis has 13 points now, Trey Mann has 16, Auburn has 20.

Watching the final seconds run off the clock is like waiting for the sweet release of death.

Okay, it’s now halftime and Auburn is losing 44-22. I’m going to give myself a mental break and eat some spaghetti.

(Editor’s Note: I told her it was for the best she just eat spaghetti the rest of the night. Yum! Spaghetti!)
