Sean McVay jokingly slams Mike McDaniel after Jalen Ramsey trade

It’s all fun and games.

Over two weeks ago, the Miami Dolphins made another huge trade, this time acquiring cornerback Jalen Ramsey from the Los Angeles Chargers for tight end Hunter Long and a 2023 third-round pick.

This move comes months after the Dolphins acquired wide receiver Tyreek Hill and linebacker Bradley Chubb from the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos, respectively.

For really the first time since trade, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel and Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay were able to speak to the media at the league’s annual meetings. Both gave their reactions to the transaction. This gave McVay the perfect opportunity to throw a light-hearted jab at his old colleague.

“It’s funny,” McVay said. “When I talked to Jalen after he had spoken with Mike, Jalen said Mike told him that he’ll be the best head coach that he ever played for. I said ‘he might be that, but he’ll definitely be the weirdest.’

“Mike’s the best, though. Mike and I were spending some time together yesterday. I think they’ll vibe really well because you talk about two guys that are refreshingly secure in who they are. They both have got a swagger and confidence and passion for this game. I know Jalen’s excited. I know Mike’s really excited about being able to have him, and even coach (Vic) Fangio. I talked to coach Fangio about him. There will be some comfort and familiarity with a lot of the different things that coach Fangio will ask him to do. I have no doubt that he’s gonna shine real bright in Miami.”

McVay and McDaniel spent three seasons together in Washington from 2011-13 under Mike Shanahan. During that time, McVay was the team’s tight ends coach, and McDaniel moved up from offensive assistant to wide receivers coach.

Positional coaches and assistants spend so much time with each other during the course of an NFL season that it’s only natural to see close friendships built in those stadiums.

While McVay is happy for his old friend, he’d probably rather have Ramsey on his roster than another.

Before trade to Dolphins, Jalen Ramsey told agent he wouldn’t go anywhere but Miami

He made it clear what his intentions were.

One of the very first moves that Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier made this offseason was the acquisition of cornerback Jalen Ramsey from the Los Angeles Rams.

Ramsey, 28, has been one of the most impressive cornerbacks in the NFL since being selected fifth overall in 2016. However, the Rams were only able to get a third-round pick and tight end Hunter Long for a player who could find himself in Canton one day.

A big part of the reason Los Angeles couldn’t get more in return was that it was known he wanted to be in Miami. Albert Breer of the MMQB detailed the trade this week, including how badly Ramsey wanted to be in South Florida.

“I’m not going anywhere but there,” he told his agent, David Mulugheta. “So make sure that’s where I end up.”

Breer says that Rams general manager Les Snead asked for more but Grier stood pat. Snead eventually landed on Long and the third-round pick, but apparently that wasn’t the best offer.

“There were teams willing to go further than that, but the Rams wanted to do right by Ramsey, and they also knew what Ramsey himself did — that no one would trade for the corner without knowing Ramsey would sign off on the deal,” Breer wrote.

Ramsey wanted guarantees that he’d be around in the form of money, something he wasn’t getting in his original deal. After a reworked agreement, the two sides were pleased, and the trade was made. Ramsey had won. And so did the Dolphins.

How will Jalen Ramsey fit in Vic Fangio’s Dolphins defense?

Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will have to bring the best out of Jalen Ramsey, and here’s how he might do it.

In 2022, the Miami Dolphins’ cornerbacks as a group allowed 159 completions on 258 targets for 2,303 yards, 15 touchdowns, five interceptions, 36 pass deflections, 10 penalties, an opponent completion rate of 55.8%, and an opponent passer rating of 92.5, seventh-worst in the league.

In their efforts to improve a defense that finished fourth in DVOA against the run and 25th against the pass, the Dolphins have added two very big names to their group this offseason. They hired legendary defensive coordinator Vic Fangio in February, making him the NFL’s highest-paid coach at his position.

Then, on Sunday, the Dolphins traded a 2023 draft pick and tight end Hunter Long to the Rams for the services of cornerback Jalen Ramsey. This was a salary offload move by the Rams, who were on the books for Ramsey’s 2023 cap number of $17 million as part of the five-year, $100 million contract extension he signed in 2020. Now, the Dolphins have one year in which Ramsey’s dead cap of $35.5 million makes any release prohibitive, a 2024 cap hit and dead cap hit of $18.5 million, and a 2025 situation in which Ramsey’s cap hit is $19.5 million, and the dead money doesn’t exist.

A pretty good short-term deal for a cornerback who will turn 29 on October 24, and had an up-and-down season in 2022. Per Pro Football Focus, Ramsey allowed 56 catches on 86 targets for 712 yards, 234 yards after the catch, seven touchdowns, four interceptions, 11 pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 98.6. Good for body temperature, perhaps not so good for coverage. It was a down season after Ramsey’s 2021, in which he allowed 72 catches on 117 targets for 873 yards, 354 yards after the catch, five touchdowns, four interceptions, 15 pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 84.5. Ramsey, as on and off as his coverage style has always been, was a primary reason the Rams nabbed their second Lombardi Trophy as a franchise at the end of the 2021 season.

Ramsey was clearly happy about the trade.

Now, it’s up to Fangio to put Ramsey in the best possible position to succeed — and based on Fangio’s track record, we’re going to take the over in a positive sense. But what might that look like on the field, based on what both Fangio and Ramsey have done in the past?

WATCH: Jalen Ramsey shares his excitement to join Dolphins

He lays out what Miami is getting in himself, as a player.

The Miami Dolphins made a big splash on the Sunday before the start of the 2023 league year, agreeing to acquire cornerback Jalen Ramsey from the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for tight end Hunter Long and a third-round draft pick.

While the move won’t be made official until March 15 at 4:00 p.m. ET, the cornerback is clearly very excited to be back in Florida, where he spent his collegiate years at Florida State).

After sharing some of that joy on Twitter, NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe caught up with the cornerback, who went on about his feelings and told Dolphins fans exactly the type of player they can expect to see on game days.

Rams to trade CB Jalen Ramsey to the Dolphins and Twitter reacts

The Los Angeles Rams and Miami Dolphins agreed to a trade involving CB Jalen Ramsey. See some of the best reactions from Twitter.

The Los Angeles Rams and Miami Dolphins have agreed to a trade that will send cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the AFC East club.

The Rams had been shopping Ramsey since the end of the regular season, and it was only natural that Los Angeles would eventually find a team willing to agree before the start of free agency. The Dolphins with new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio were the most willing.

The trade won’t be finalized and become official until 4:00 p.m. ET on March 15, which is the start of the new league year.

Here are some of the best reactions from Twitter to the Ramsey trade news.

Jalen Ramsey, new Dolphins teammates react to trade news

Everyone is excited to get to work.

The Miami Dolphins have agreed to acquire cornerback Jalen Ramsey from the Los Angeles Rams for tight end Hunter Long and a third-round pick in this year’s draft.

While the trade can’t be officially completed until the start of the new league year (March 15 at 4 p.m. ET), Ramsey and a number of his new Dolphins teammates took to social media to celebrate right away.

Miami looks ready to compete for a Lombardi Trophy in 2023, and the players on the roster are ready to get to work.

Jags tied for second-most picks in 2021 NFL draft

Jacksonville picks 10 times in the upcoming draft, including four picks in the first two rounds. That’s tied for second-most in the draft.

Though trading away players like Jalen Ramsey and Yannick Ngakoue was a hard pill to swallow at the time, those moves have given the Jacksonville Jaguars a lot of draft capital as the team attempts to rebuild. Jacksonville has 10 picks in the upcoming NFL draft, tied with five other teams for the second-most in the draft: the New York Jets, the Green Bay Packers, the Minnesota Vikings, the New England Patriots and the Dallas Cowboys.

The Jags originally had 11 selections in this draft, which would have tied Philadelphia for the most, but they traded one of their seventh-round picks to the Saints to acquire defensive tackle Malcom Brown.

The Jaguars pick four times in the first two rounds, and they pick twice in the fourth and fifth rounds, as well. They don’t currently have a fifth-round pick.

One of the team’s 10 picks is at first overall by virtue of its 1-15 season in 2020. Jacksonville will likely select quarterback Trevor Lawrence with that pick, and after trading away several players who led the team to an AFC Championship in 2017, it at least has the opportunity to build a new core around Lawrence in this draft.
