Raiders add potential Jakobi Meyers replacement for week 14

With Jakobi Meyers Questionable with an ankle injjury week 14 vs the Buccaneers, the Raiders elevated practice squad WR Kristian Wilkerson.

Thursday, Raiders starting receiver Jakobi Meyers suddenly missed practice with an ankle injury. Friday morning, head coach Antonio Pierce said Meyers would be full go for practice, but when the official injury report came out, Meyers was limited with the ankle and officially Questionable for the game.

The Raiders can ill afford to lose any receivers due to their already lacking depth at the position, especially after DJ Turner was placed on injured reserve this week. But of all the receivers they can least afford to lose, it’s Meyers.

Pierce seemed confident Meyers would be able to play Sunday in Tampa, but Saturday the team made a contingency plan, elevating Kristian Wilkerson.

The four-year veteran originally signed with the Raiders in May of 2023 and has been with the team off and on since then. He appeared in two games last season with one start and this would be his third game with the team this season. He has two catches for 18 yards and a touchdown this season.

Earlier this week, they signed practice squad wide receiver Terrace Marshall to fill the spot on the depth chart when Turner was placed on IR.

But even with Marshall, the Raiders had just four wide receivers on the active roster. Should Meyers be unable to go, they would have been left with just three, making the Wilkerson elevation a must, if only to ensure they could field a full starting lineup with one reserve.

Raiders get their number one receiver back at practice

The first real sign Jakobi Meyers could return to the lineup as the Raiders’ top receiver hits the practice field today.

After missing the past couple weeks with an ankle injury, Jakobi Meyers will take the practice Wednesday. This according to head coach Antonio Pierce. This opens up the possibility that Meyers could return to the lineup when the Chiefs come to town on Sunday.

With both Meyers and Davante Adams not in the lineup the past couple weeks, the Raiders offense struggled to get any kind of significant production from the wide receiver position.

Adams is now in New York, so the significance of having Meyers back can’t be overstated. He is the closest thing this team has to a number one receiver.

Without him, fellow starter Tre Tucker had difficulty getting open. He was consistently facing double teams down the field which led to just three catches for 36 yards over the past two weeks combined.

DJ Turner got the start in the slot, but the other outside receiver spot was shared by practice squad call ups Alex Bachman and Kristian Wilkerson. Neither of whom had a target in the loss to the Rams last Sunday.

Antonio Pierce gives update on status of WR Jakobi Meyers for Week 7 vs Rams

Early in the week, Antonio Pierce was at least somewhat hopeful that Jakobi Meyers would return to practice at some point this week, opening up the possibility he would play this Sunday when the team travels to LA to face the Rams.

As of today, those hopes have diminished considerably. Meyers was unable to return to practice this week and Pierce announced Friday morning that Meyers would officially be listed as Doubtful for the game.

This is a significant loss for the Raiders. They were already quite thin at the receiver position with the departure of Davante Adams in a trade to the New York Jets. With Meyers looking like he will not be able to go, they are without both their starting outside receivers again.

Last week without Adams and Meyers, the Raiders didn’t even target a receiver until the final seconds of the first half. By the time the game was over, Tre Tucker — the only regular starter on the roster — had just two targets with zero touches.

Injury update: Maxx Crosby among several Raiders starters back at practice Friday

Raiders get some potential good news Friday with several key starters back at practice in prep for the Steelers.

With the Steelers coming to Las Vegas Sunday, the Raiders will need all the healthy bodies they can get. Friday’s practice will see several starters who had missed the first two practices this week return to the field, opening up the possibility that they will play Sunday.

None are more important than Maxx Crosby who has missed more practices than he’s particapted the past few weeks as he battles through a high ankle sprain. He played last week despite missing two practices, and is expected to do the same this week.

One of the more worrisome missing players this week is WR Jakobi Meyers. So his return to practice Friday was a welcome sight. With Davante Adams not playing with his hamstring injury and trade request, the Raiders were already digging into their depth chart at receiver. Meyers’s absence would have them woefully thin at the position.

Rookie guard Jackson Powers-Johnson missed Wednesday and Thursday with a knee injury and is returning Friday. Antonio Pierce expects he will play and is hoping the second round pick can hold up against All Pro DT Cameron Heyward.

Also practicing Friday after missing last Sunday’s game and the first two practices this week is RB Zamir White. It was expected that even if White were able to play last week, he would lose snaps to Alexander Mattison. White’s status is uncertain for the game.
