Quarterback position will be something to watch for LSU ahead of 2021 season

Who will take the reins as LSU’s starting quarterback this season?

Myles Brennan was the clear-cut starter for LSU ahead of the 2020 football season, but his campaign was cut short when he suffered an torn abdomen against Missouri, causing him to miss seven games.

Heading into the 2021 season, a lot has changed at LSU.

Former offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger will move into an analyst role with ex-Panthers quarterbacks coach Jake Peetz taking his place. The Tigers also brought back DJ Mangas, who served as an offensive assistant for the Panthers, to be the team’s passing game coordinator.

Both Peetz and Mangas have a connection to Joe Brady, who was LSU’s passing game coordinator when the Tigers went undefeated and won the national championship over Clemson in 2019.

Orgeron said he would have to talk with Peetz about the situation at quarterback as LSU goes “all spread” in 2021.

Peetz shared his thoughts about the passers in the room on Wednesday.

“Max (Johnson) is a guy, you’re right, he can move. He has some mobility to him,” he said. “But if you look at his calmness and his footwork in the pocket. This guy can play pro-style football. This guy can play in the pocket, he can sling it. We can do some different things, moving it.”

Peetz made a comparison to Brennan, in some aspects.

“I would say the same thing for Brennan. He can move the pocket, he has very good balance. He’s a guy that can sling it, I like his lower half.”

He also had appreciation for what TJ Finley, who initially took the starting position in Brennan’s relief until Florida matchup, brings to the table.

TJ is a big a man now. We were talking earlier today,” he said. “Seeing him for the first time reminded me a lot of when I first came to Carolina and seeing Cam Newton. These are big men.

LSU also has Garrett Nussmeier out of Flower Mound, Texas, who has been a highly touted recruit, in the room this year.

“Then we have Garrett Nussmeier. Garrett tore up 6A football in the state of Texas,” he said. “He’s a guy that is extremely competitive.”

Based on this alone, it sounds like the quarterback competition in Baton Rouge has been busted open, and it will be interesting to see who takes the field as a starter when the season begins.

Where is LSU in USA TODAY’s early Top 25 poll?

The Alabama Crimson Tide finished the 2020 college football season as national champions after a 52-24 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes.

The Alabama Crimson Tide finished the 2020 college football season as national champions after a 52-24 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes.

While Alabama will lose several starters to the NFL, the Crimson Tide keep on rolling. Erick Smith of USA TODAY Sports recently released an early look at the Top 25 for the 2021 season, and Alabama comes in at No. 1.

The Georgia Bulldogs come in at No. 2, Oklahoma at No. 3, Clemson at No. 4 and the Buckeyes at No. 5.

While two SEC teams made Smith’s top five, Texas A&M came in at No. 7 and Florida at No. 10.

The next SEC team to make it into Smith’s poll was the LSU Tigers at No. 15.

After winning the national championship in 2019, LSU lost a record number of players to the NFL draft. And, when the 2020 season began, the Tigers saw several key players opt out due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

To make matters worse, Joe Burrow’s replacement at quarterback, Myles Brennan, went down with an injury in October, and the Tigers were forced to go with a pair of true freshmen under center.

The results weren’t good, as LSU finished the season with a 5-5 record. However, the Tigers did win their final two games when Max Johnson took over at quarterback.

Heading into 2021, there is optimism in Baton Rouge again. Jake Peetz is the new offensive coordinator, while the Tigers continue their search for a new defensive coordinator after firing Bo Pelini after just one season.

The Tigers signed a top-five recruiting class and will return virtually their entire offensive and defensive lines.

LSU should bounce back in 2021 with so many talented players returning to school.

The biggest question facing Peetz is who will start at quarterback for the Tigers in 2021?

That will remain to be seen.

LSU hires Jake Peetz as offensive coordinator, DJ Mangas as passing game coordinator

One day after LSU head coach Ed Orgeron went on his weekly radio spot and said his top choices for offensive coordinator were in the building; the school announced it had hired Jake Peetz as offensive coordinator and DJ Mangas as passing game coordinator.

Peetz takes over for Steve Ensminger, who retired in December after 10 seasons on LSU’s staff.

Mangas returns to Baton Rouge, where he spent the 2019 season as an offensive analyst under Joe Brady — LSU’s passing game coordinator in that season.

Mangas followed Brady to the Carolina Panthers as an offensive assistant, where he served under Brady, who was the offensive coordinator in 2020.

Peetz was already on staff with Carolina, where he spent the 2019 season as running backs coach before Brady moved him to quarterbacks coach for the 2020 season.

Peetz and Mangas were recommended to Orgeron by Brady after the head coach made it clear he wanted to get back to the same offensive scheme from LSU’s championship team in 2019.

Peetz, 37, has spent several years in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders, Washington Football Team, Jacksonville Jaguars and, most recently, the Carolina Panthers.

Peetz has also spent two seasons on Nick Saban’s staff as an offensive analyst in 2013 and 2018.

Mangas was a college teammate of Brady’s at William & Mary and coached under him in two different stints with LSU and Carolina.

Orgeron released a statement on the new hires.

Both Jake and DJ come highly recommended from one of the premier and innovative offensive coaches in the game in Joe Brady. Jake brings 10 years of NFL experience with him to our staff. He spent a season coaching alongside and learning from Joe (Brady) so we couldn’t be more excited about Jake joining our staff. His knowledge of football combined with the players we have on our roster, will make for a dynamic offense for LSU in 2021.

Peetz and Mangas will certainly have plenty of talent to work with in 2021, but there will still be uncertainty on how college football will proceed with spring practice due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Panthers quarterbacks coach Jake Peetz poached by LSU

LSU just announced that they have hired Panthers quarterbacks coach Jake Peetz as their new offensive coordinator.

LSU just announced that they have hired Panthers quarterbacks coach Jake Peetz as their new offensive coordinator.

Before he was their QBs coach, Peetz was coaching the team’s running backs. He has also put in time with the Raiders and Jaguars plus a couple of stints on Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama.

Peetz obviously shares a connection to the university via Carolina offensive coordinator Joe Brady, who was the passing game coordinator for the Tigers during Joe Burrow’s Heisman-winning 2019 season.

Speaking of Brady, he may also be on his way out. Three NFL teams requested interviews with him: the Texans, Chargers and Falcons, who he’s interviewing with today according to Ian Rapoport at NFL Network.

LSU reportedly meeting with Panthers QB coach Jake Peetz, assistant DJ Mangas

LSU is set to meet with Panthers quarterbacks coach Jake Peetz and offensive assistant DJ Mangas this week.

LSU will meet with Carolina Panthers quarterbacks coach Jake Peetz and offensive assistant DJ Mangas this week, Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports reported Monday.

The Tigers are targeting Peetz to fill the void at offensive coordinator, and for Mangas, who was with LSU in 2019 as an offensive analyst, to potentially join as the passing game coordinator.

Peetz and Mangas both worked under Joe Brady — LSU’s former passing game coordinator — in Carolina.

Peetz — who has spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders in the past — served as the Panthers running backs coach in 2019.

He was named the quarterbacks coach ahead of the 2020 season. Peetz was a large factor in Christian McCaffrey’s success, when the rusher recorded 1,387 rushing yards and 19 total touchdowns.

Peetz is set to leave tonight “for a meeting with LSU that will stretch into tomorrow,” according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Now that Steve Ensminger is moving from offensive coordinator to an analyst role for LSU, it’s a good move on Ed Orgeron’s part to go for coaches connected to Brady after the historical level of success of the 2019 season.

Report: Panthers making 2 more changes to Matt Rhule’s staff

Matt Rhule’s new coaching staff for the Panthers is nearly complete but he’s still making tweaks.

Matt Rhule’s new coaching staff for the Panthers is nearly complete but he’s still making tweaks. A couple changes have been reported in the last hour.

According to Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, the team is moving running backs coach Jake Peetz over to the quarterbacks coach position.

The team had interviewed three former NFL head coaches for this spot, so it’s interesting that they went with Peetz. He has previously served as the quarterbacks coach for the Raiders and also worked as a QB analyst for Nick Saban at Alabama a couple of times.

In related news, Pete Thamel at Yahoo Sports reports the Panthers are hiring Jeff Nixon.

Nixon’s role has not yet been confirmed, but he has extensive experience working with running backs, so we can reasonably assume he’s taking over for Peetz.

As Thamel mentions, he brings plenty of pro experience to the table. Nixon’s first coaching job in the NFL was as an offensive/special teams assistant for the Eagles. From there, he moved on to be the running backs coach for the Dolphins five years. His most recent gig at this level was the tight ends coach for the 49ers in 2016.
