Texans stash offensive linemen Jake Eldrenkamp, Jordan Steckler on the practice squad

The Houston Texans have signed offensive linemen Jake Eldrenkamp, Jordan Steckler to the practice squad.

The Houston Texans have added offensive line depth to their practice squad.

The team announced Tuesday they have signed guard Jake Eldrenkamp and tackle Jordan Steckler to the practice squad.

Steckler was a part of the Texans’ training camp and preseason roster, and gives the Texans a familiar face as they evaluate their depth along the edge of the offensive line.

Eldrenkamp is a career practice-squadder who started out as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Rams in 2017. Eldrenkamp was waived at the end of the 2018 preseason, and then caught on with the Cleveland Browns practice squad in the 2018 season. At the end of the year, he signed a reserve/future contract with the New England Patriots, but didn’t make it out offseason workouts in 2019.

In 2019, Eldrenkamp played with the Indianapolis Colts through 2021 preseason. In his time with Indianapolis, the former Washington product was active for two games in the 2020 season.

In late September, Eldrenkamp was signed to the Patriots practice squad, but didn’t even spend a week with the team.

Colts elevate J’Marcus Webb, Jake Eldrenkamp to active roster

Colts made roster moves.

The Indianapolis Colts elevated offensive linemen Jake Eldrenkamp and  J’Marcus Webb from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of the Week 16 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team announced Saturday.

Both players were elevated under a COVID-19 replacement tag. The Colts had to place starting right tackle Braden Smith on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Friday while rookie linebacker Jordan Glasgow will miss his third consecutive game on the list.

The Colts will also be without starting left tackle Anthony Castonzo, who was ruled out on Saturday due to an ankle injury that popped up late in the week.

Indy will be down their starting tackles against the NFL’s best pass rush and will need their depth to step up in a big way.

Colts elevate G Jake Eldrenkamp, WR Marcus Johnson

Colts make a roster move.

The Indianapolis Colts elevated guard Jake Eldrenkamp and wide receiver Marcus Johnson ahead of the Week 5 game against the Cleveland Browns, the team announced Saturday.

With Anthony Castonzo ruled out, the Colts need some depth on the offensive line. Le’Raven Clark will be the one to fill in for Castonzo while Eldrenkamp will be the backup to Quenton Nelson and Mark Glowinski alongside rookie Danny Pinter.

Johnson was called up for the Week 4 game against the Bears. With Michael Pittman Jr. and Parris Campbell on the injured reserve list, the Colts needed some depth behind T.Y. Hilton and Zach Pascal.

The Colts and Browns are expected to kick off at 4:25 p.m. ET at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Colts aren’t concerned about OL depth

Frank Reich has high hopes for the OL.

The Indianapolis Colts didn’t make major moves to add to the offensive line this offseason like they have in recent offseasons. Outside of signing Anthony Castonzo to a contract extension, the only other move came in the draft.

We know how much the Colts value offensive line play. Ever since Chris Ballard took over as general manager in 2017, the priority has been to build up the depth on the offensive line. With an elite set of five starters, the Colts focused their attention on adding some depth to the interior this offseason.

There are some who are still concerned about the depth of the unit behind the five starters, but head coach Frank Reich doesn’t feel that way.

“I really am hopeful that we can go again with our same five starters playing every snap. I don’t know how realistic that is. I don’t want to say (it’s) a concern, it’s always a priority,” Reich said Tuesday in a conference call. “It’s always a priority if the right opportunity would have fell in the draft, there was discussion of finding the right guy, but it just didn’t fall that way. It just didn’t fall that way for us.”

The Colts were fortunate enough to see all five of their starting offensive linemen play 16 games—each playing over 1,000 snaps on the campaign. That doesn’t happen all that often, especially at the level they played.

But the Colts did need to add some depth this offseason. They decided it was best to go with Danny Pinter out of Ball State in the fifth round, but Reich also mentioned another player they hope to develop.

“We talked a lot about that and we were very excited to get Danny Pinter. I think that he adds good depth. Then we just keep developing,” Reich said. “We think Jake (Eldrenkamp) is a good player. We think Jake Eldrenkamp can continue to develop. He adds good depth for us inside and a couple new guys that we brought in from last year we think will continue to develop there and keep our eyes open.”

The Colts have their starting five returning for another season, but the team knows they must be ready if one or more of them get injured. It’s the NFL. It happens all the time.

But while some of the depth might have some question marks, Reich and his staff aren’t all that concerned about the players they have in the room.

Colts elevate OL Jake Eldrenkamp to active roster

Colts fill out the roster.

The Indianapolis Colts elevated guard Jake Eldrenkamp from the practice squad to the active roster, the team announced Saturday.

The Colts placed kicker Adam Vinatieri and wide receiver Parris Campbell on the injured reserve list at the beginning of the week, which opened up two spots on the active roster. They used one spot to sign wide receiver Dontrelle Inman and now the roster rounds out with the elevation of Eldrenkamp.

Eldrenkamp has been with the Colts since being claimed off of waivers on May 21. He spent the entire offseason competing for a spot but was ultimately waived at the roster cuts in September. He was signed to the practice squad and spent the entire season there up until this point.

Eldrenkamp is a depth piece and will be working behind Mark Glowinski, Quenton Nelson and Joe Haeg.
