Jake Browning ready to move past mistakes after loss to Steelers

The Bengals QB is focused on the response, not the mistakes.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jake Browning regressed back to the backup quarterback range during Saturday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

There, Browning threw a trio of interceptions in the 34-11 loss, one of them an ugly attempted throwaway that floated back into the endzone into three defenders for an easy turnover.

But after the game, Browning elected to focus more on the response, the goal not to let the loss snowball.

“The playoffs, I don’t know. I’ve been ignoring that in general,” Browning said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “I’m going to learn from this. A lot of quarterbacks have bad games. I had a bad game. It’s how you respond. That’s where I am and that’s where we’re  at as a team.”

This approach certainly worked after the previous loss to the Steelers, as the Bengals revamped the playbook and rattled off three straight wins under Browning’s direction.

But this time the task won’t be as simple now that defenses have seen the film on this rendition of the Bengals. And it doesn’t help that the team’s next opponent is the Kansas City Chiefs on the road.

Still, the Bengals aren’t mathematically eliminated and Browning’s setting the tone for the last two games.

Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings — How rookies Sam LaPorta and Jahmyr Gibbs have come to define the Lions’ offense, and what the Bengals may have taught the rest of the NFL about how to attack Brian Flores’ crazy-quilt Vikings defense.

Dallas Cowboys at Miami Dolphins — Why the Cowboys had best be ready for Raheem Mostert and Miami’s run game, and the keys to the Dolphins’ drastic defensive improvement in the second half of the season.

Baltimore Ravens at San Francisco 49ers — Speaking of drastic defensive improvement in the second half of the season, did you know that the 49ers rank first in the NFL in Defensive DVOA since Week 10? A severe test for Lamar Jackson and Baltimore’s offense, especially without rookie running back Keaton Mitchell.

Ranking the top 32 NFL quarterbacks in CPOE going into Week 16

There is no quarterback controversy in Seattle.

There is no quarterback controversy in Seattle. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll made that clear after his team’s win on Monday night over the Eagles, just in case it wasn’t already obvious. While Drew Lock deserves credit for leading them through their game-winning drive, these last two starts for Lock have proven that he’s nowhere near the level of quarterback that Geno Smith is right now – despite having superior velocity, range and athleticism. Carroll says Smith will play next week against the Titans.

Aside from the kind of decision making we saw him employ against the 49ers, Lock’s biggest issue on the field is accuracy. For his career he’s completed less than 60% of his pass attempts and against the Eagles he missed several passes badly – including an overthrow that would have been an easy touchdown for Tyler Lockett. Lock continued to miss right through that last drive, on which he only completed half of his 10 passes, of which three were in danger of being picked off.

This week’s QB rankings illustrates the lesson even further. While Smith ranks just outside the top 10 in completion percentage over expected (2.7%), Lock is near the bottom of the league at -5%. That’s not even good enough to crack the top 40 this year. Here’s how the top 32 quarterbacks stack up in this stat going into Week 16.

Jake Browning gets revenge in OT win over Vikings: ‘They should’ve never (expletive) cut me!’

Jake Browning has an iconic moment on the sidelines while getting some revenge.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jake Browning had something to say about the Minnesota Vikings after he led the Bengals to a 27-24 win over them in overtime, keeping Cincinnati’s playoff hopes alive for another week.

“They should’ve never (expletive) cut me!” Browning screamed into a camera after slamming his helmet on the ground.

“That one felt good,” Browning said to the media after the game. “I think right after we made the field goal to win the game, I screamed at the camera and said, ‘They never should have cut me.’”

He was mostly correct, give or take an expletive. Right after Evan McPherson made the field goal, Browning found the nearest camera and let his emotions out after putting together a 14-point fourth quarter and sending the game into overtime.

Browning began his career in Minnesota when they signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2019, but the team released him three separate times, signing him to their practice squad twice before he landed on the Bengals practice squad at the start of the 2021 season.

“There was definitely a little extra part (to this game),” Browning said. “I remember getting cut there the last time, and just being told, ‘Hey, we might have a spot for you on the practice squad. Go to the hotel and wait.’ So, I sat in the hotel for a couple of hours not knowing if I had a job or not, and just basically got a call from my agent. They didn’t tell me. I had been there for two years. I’ve been cut my fair share of times, and that was probably the (expletive) one.”

Recently Browning has been proving himself right with three straight wins, two of those in overtime against playoff contenders. In the win over the Vikings, he had 324 passing yards on 29 of 42 passing with two touchdowns and an interception which allowed him to let out what he had been feeling all week leading up to the game.

“You can’t say that the whole week and then go lose,” Browning said. “You kind of just wait until you win, and then don’t look like an idiot.”

Bengals QB Jake Browning makes some wild NFL history

Jake Browning stands alone in the history books.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jake Browning has done the unthinkable, literally, over the course of his last three outings in place of Joe Burrow while keeping his team alive in the playoff hunt.

Per the NFL after the Week 15 win over the Minnesota Vikings, Browning is the first quarterback with 1,000-plus passing yards with a completion percentage north of 75 percent over his first four starts.

That’s counting any quarterback, ever, since 1950.

Over his last four games, Browning has thrown for 1,180 yards and six touchdowns with another two scores as a runner. He’s thrown for at least 275 yards in each of the three consecutive wins, too.

Bengals QB Jake Browning receives drug test from NFL after 3rd straight win

Jake Browning gets a drug testing request from the NFL.

In a hilarious turn of events, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jake Browning will apparently undergo a league-mandated drug test following his team’s win over the Minnesota Vikings in Week 15.

After steering the team to the shocking overtime win — its third consecutive victory to remain alive in the playoff hunt — Browning took to his Instagram stories to reveal he received a testing request from the NFL.

These tests are random, but it’s always funny when they pop up after a big performance. Browning threw for 324 yards and a pair of scores during the win and over his last three outings in place of Joe Burrow has totaled seven touchdowns. Now, his Bengals are 8-6 and in prime playoff positioning.

Win over Vikings meant more to Jake Browning: ‘They never should have cut me’

The former Vikings QB enjoyed the win on Saturday just a little bit more

Saturday’s matchup between the Minnesota Vikings and the Cincinnati Bengals wasn’t just a battle of backup quarterbacks, it was a chance for quarterback Jake Browning to face off against his former team.

The Vikings signed Browning as an undrafted free agent in 2019 with a $100,000 signing bonus. He was waived during final cuts in 2021, and that motivated him against the Vikings on Saturday.

Browning didn’t like the way things were handled on the way out, saying that he was at a hotel waiting to see if he would be added to the practice squad but heard from his agent instead.

Naturally, the win meant just a little bit more to Browning.

“That one felt good,” Browning said after helping the Cincinnati Bengals come from 14 down to defeat the Vikings 27-24 in overtime.

“I think after we made the field goal,” he said, “I screamed at a camera and said, ‘They never should have cut me.’”

Bengals’ Jake Browning said beating the Vikings was personal: ‘They never should’ve cut me’

Jake Browning took Saturday’s Bengals win over the Vikings very personally.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jake Browning said he took Saturday’s overtime win over the Minnesota Vikings very personally.

While talking with reporters after the home win, Browning admitted that he hadn’t let go of the way the Vikings cut him back in 2021.

He told the reporting pool that Minnesota didn’t even tell him directly that he wasn’t going to make the team after sending him to a hotel to await his fate, opting to go through his agent instead. He had been with the program for two years before his anticlimactic exit.

While that Vikings regime has since been replaced, Browning said that this was the worst way that being cut had ever been handled.

Browning took the win so personally that he said that he yelled, “They never should’ve cut me!” toward a camera after Bengals kicker Evan McPherson nailed the game-winning field goal in extra time. Yowza.

Some NSFW language to follow.

If you’re a Vikings fan, you might not even remember that Browning had been with the team for two seasons. However, it’ll be hard to forget him now after he dealt Minnesota a tough loss in December.

Jake Browning got an NFL drug test notification right after the Bengals beat the Vikings in OT

The NFL has no chill.

The NFL waited no time to set up a drug test for Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jake Browning after he led the team to a 27-24 overtime victory against the Minnesota Vikings at home on Saturday.

Browning’s stint filling in for injured quarterback Joe Burrow has been a pleasant surprise for Cincinnati, as he’s helped the Bengals keep their playoff hopes alive after losing Burrow for the season.

However, the NFL must still want to check in on Browning anyhow as the league has been known to do with surprising performances from unexpected players from time to time.

At least he had a sense of humor about it, as he posted the text notification requesting a test on his Instagram.

The NFL can administer as many drug tests as it wishes, but it’s not likely to dampen the fun of “Browning Fever” in Cincinnati.

We’ll see how long this Cinderella story can go for the Bengals, but it sure looks like Browning is taking it all in stride.

Jake Browning, Bengals rally to down Vikings in OT

The Bengals rallied to defeat the Vikings in overtime

Jake Browning continues to be remarkable for the Cincinnati Bengals in place of Joe Burrow.

The undrafted quarterback led Cincinnati to 21 points in the fourth quarter and a game-winning drive in overtime Saturday as the Bengals downed the Vikings, 27-24.

The teams traded possessions in overtime before Browning made the big play, finding Tyler Boyd for 44 yards.

That set up Evan McPherson, who easily converted a 29-yard field goal attempt for the victory that improved Cincy to 8-6.

Minnesota, which led at one point, 17-3, fell to 7-7.
